I tried searching, but couldn't find a thread on this even though I saw it a long time ago. I have a Radeon X1300 Pro vid card; what is the best setting for "quality versus performance" in Catylyst? I am willing to sacrifice some FPS if going to quality makes it look better; but does it?Best Regards, Donny :-waveFLYing? It's cool. Trillions of birds and insects can't be wrong.

I currently have a WD 80Gb HD installed with SP1 but not SP2. I am, for whatever reason, unable to install SP2. I get about halfway through, and I get an "Access Denied" message. I have looked on the web for solutions but have found nothing that works besides a reinstall Windows XP option. The only problem is, is that I have a lot of programs and other info that I will lose if I do a complete reinstall. My question is, can I just get another hard drive (for C: drive) and do a fresh install on that drive, reinstall FS9 and other associated files on it, and place the current hard drive as drive D: ? That way, when I want to use a program on it (the new D: and prior C: d…

Hi All,Well, since I preordered FSX I am patiently waiting for the 17th, and in the meantime I've been flying the demo. I get acceptable results on the FSX demo with my system (see specs below), but know from posts on this board that I'll have to do some tweaking on the full version at larger airports and cities. In looking over my specs below, I'd appreciate your advice on any cost-effective upgrades I could do prior to Vista/dX10. At present, I am considering1) adding another 1GB of DDR2 SDRAM@ 667MHz (Crucial $163)but I am uncertain if I should upgrade video cards now, or just wait for the DX10 cards next year?2) Shelve my 2 GeForce 6800s for a single GeForce 7-series…

Not that FSX allows for much multi-threading to occur, but in the event that some small tasks are processed in parallel (as I understand FSX supports), is it then true that XP Home does not support it?http://www.hardwareinreview.com/cms/content/view/29/29/I was attempting to find some info on RAN useage with dual cores and came across this article.Bruce.AMD 64*2 4500+, 2* 1GB TWINX 3500LL, ASUS A8N32-SLI, 6800GT.

I am considering upgrading my CPU from am AMD Athlon 64 3000+. I'm imagining that this will be a relatively cheap ($100 or less), short-term upgrade. I'll be doing a "start fresh" upgrade probably late in 2007. My card (6800GT) seems to be out-pacing my CPU, since I am able to ramp up to the highest resolutions without helping my frame rate.Anyone have any sense if this will net me any worthwhile improvement? How can I determine what processors my motherboard (AOpen AK86-L Socket 754) supports?

I would like to try FSX but I need some advice as to what I should do with my system. I have a budget for a new card at about the $300 mark but would I be disappointed in the performance ? Is there any significant advantage in overclocking the chip ? Or perhaps more RAM would be needed ?Thanks in advance to any commentsAlyOS Name Microsoft Windows XP ProfessionalVersion 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600System Type X86-based PCProcessor x86 Family 15 Model 2 Stepping 9 GenuineIntel ~2813 MhzProcessor x86 Family 15 Model 2 Stepping 9 GenuineIntel ~2813 MhzBIOS Version/Date Award Software International, Inc. This happens with FS9 and the FSX demo. A few weeks ago I noticed my FPS randomly going to half. In other words, I was getting around 25 FPS one day, and the next, I'd be down to 11-12. I figured out that it was Virtual Memory related. I switched to System managed page file (it was set at 2 gig permanently), and my FPS went back up. Well, the next day it was half again.SO...I disabled the pagefile altogether...it went back up. NOW, it's down again. I basically have to change the pagefile every time I want to play FS9 (or FSX...the same thing happens to the demo). Doesn't matter if it's system managed, off, or user set...as long as I change it occasionally, my FPS goes b…

Hi everyone.I'm having the same performance issues as most people using FSX, and am looking to upgrade my video card. I was going to go all out and get a PCI Express 1950XTX until I found out that my A8V Deluxe motherboard didn't support PCI Express cards. So, now I'm looking for the top of the line AGP card and am hoping to get some suggestions. Ok, I finally gave up trying to get FSX to work with my ATI 9800 with 128 megs. So went out to Fry's today and threw down $199 for a PNY 7600 GS with 512 megs of DDR2. I'm still stuck with AGP since I won't be ready to upgrade MB, for at least 6 months.Wow....what a difference. FSX was pretty much unusable with the 9800 and is amazing with the new card. Clearly, it's all about having enough video memory. I think now my processor (P4 3.0 ghz. with 1 GB dual channel RAM) is probably the limiting factor, but I think I can get by for the next 6-9 months with what I have now.So if you have a 128 meg card, I would highly recommend moving up and getting a card with 256 or 5…

Found this review of some current video cards. I like the review since it's in relatively simple language and includes recommendations for us "AGP hindered" folks who can't quite part with the bucks for a new mobo but still want to update our video cards and hold on to our machines until DX10 matures (i.e., prices come down from the stratosphere).http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/09/26/the..._for_the_money/

I've had my current system for 3 years. Back in the day, I used to do a major upgrade every year or 18 months. The advance of processor speeds has slowed down, and I've been pretty happy with this system for most things (though FS9 still occassionally chugs in heavy weather and complex airports). So, with FSX on the horizon I'm starting to think about my upgrade plan. I'm not going to buy FSX until I upgrade, because I'm enjoying my current add-ons too much and I'm not looking forward to the endless tweaking.I'm hoping that around Spring 2007 the new wave of graphic cards (DX10) will have settled in. Once that happens, I'll get a new barebones system with the basics (CPU, …

I have been specing out a new PC and was looking at various dual core processors. Someone asked a very good question for which I don't have an answer... and was wondering if anyone out there could help to answer it.The question is: "with FS9 and FSX really being single thread wouldn't it make more sense to use a single core 3.8 GHz processor than a 2.4-8 dual-core?"Would a more powerful single core CPU be more beneficial than a dual core? Thanks!
