I wondered if any of you guys overclocking your i7920 could give me some advice as to settings to use.I have just built a new secondary pc to run fsx on, and wanted to clock my processor to as near 4Ghz as i can get it. I am using a titan fenrir cooler, apparently the best in class. My memory is Mushkin redline ascent PC3-12800 DDR3 part number 998692. I am using an Asus P6TD deluxe motherboard. I have found some pretty good articles on line, but as some of the descroptors did not exactly match what I had in the BIOS, I was a bit hesitant to commit. ( For example in this guide at www.overclock.net/intel-cpus/538439-guide-overclocking-core-i7-920-4-a.html the guy is refe…

Just noticed in the motherboard book for my computer I purchased in June that the Gigabyte EP31-DS3L has a maximum DDR2 memory that it will support of 4GB. I must admit I find this surprising when more users are choosing more that 4GB.The board has the Intel LGA775 socket and supports the full range of Core2 Duo and Core2 Quad procesors. It has Intel chipsets P31/G31 and ICH7.Although 4GB is more than enough for my needs I'm curious as to what it is that limits the memory. Is it the BIOS and would an update do it or is it more than that?Is this unusual?Iain SmithRugby, UK

Hi all,Last week I upgraded from my E8500 system to an I860 system.Framerates are almost the same, except in heavy detailed scenery where they do not go down as much. So a quad core seems to be good. One issue I have is micro stutters in heavy detailed scenery and with lots of clouds. When moving the autogen slider to the left things get better. With my E8500 system I did not have those micro stutters. To compare the 2 systems here the specs :" Old " E8500 [email protected] Maximus Extreme Mobo at 500 fsb6 Gb OCZ DDR1800 @ 1600 XFX 260 Black Edition graphics card ( factory oc )Thermaltake Kandalf case with built in Liquid Cooling SystemThermaltake 700W power supplyW&D 1tb…

Hello,For my new system, I am considering ordering 3 Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB drives. 1 for the OS + Office apps + few games, 1 for FS9 and 1 for FSX.Eventhough the drives are not very expensive (around 65 euro's / 90 US$), I am running against the limits of my budget, so would like to get your input on the following:Would I experience any negative consequences when I install FS9 and FSX together on one drive (same partition)? In this case, I could do with 2 drives. But if it would help the performance of both sims noticeably, I will go for 3...Please let me know your thoughts on this...Regards,Frank

After 6 month leave from FS I am back. First thing I noticed was a new toy from PMDG and for such a reasonable price, thought I might as well get some new clouds(REX) to go with it. Now my video card is not to happy about new clouds. So much like a woman that goes out for 1 pair of shoes and comes back with 2 pairs and a new dress I thought to myself "why make the Fedex guy work so hard to bring one item in a box." Now am at newegg looking at new vid cards and wandered over to CPUs and started looking at the C2Q9000s. I was kind of suprised at the prices being this high still with the i7s out now. If I was going "all in" I would not even ask this question. Is a Q9000 wort…

There is a pagefile on the C: drive and non on the D: drive. Would it benefit Flightsim if I created a Pagefile on the D: drive, or would it harm my setup? Thanks in advance Worxfan

Hello people !I have a I7-920 overclock to 3.99mhz (thanks NickN :( ) on an Asus Rampage Gene II board that come with a small exterior LCD poster that i use for monitoring temperature of the CPU, northbridge, Southbridge and Motherboard itself; with this device the CPU temp is between 64 to 67 Celsius when playing FSX ;The concern i have is i downloaded "RealTemp" and it indicate 79 to 81 Celsius ?!Which one is accurate ? i really do not want to fry my CPU....when i exit FSX it goes back down to +/- 47 degrees and if i reboot in the bios, that is about what it shows..Any ideas ?Thank you !Alain from Montreal

I'm thinking the CPU? I wan't to get the i7, which would you guys recommend? I also heard that the price may drop when Inel realeses the i9, is it worth waiting?

I am looking to build an excellent FSX desktop computer, which as you know is extremely demanding on the cpu, hdd, and graphics card. FYI, I plan to over-clock the i7 920 to approximately 4.0 GHz, I will be running Windows 7 64-bit, and I already own a great monitor, keyboard, and mouse. After quite a bit of research, I have identified the following components for my "dream" FSX system ($1700 total from NewEgg): Antec Twelve Hundred Black Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129043Western Digital RE3 WD1002FBYS 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive http://www.newegg.com/Product/Pro…

Many choose to have a completely different computer with FSX on it to avoid mixing in FSX registry entries and other related software inwith non-FSX software. I want to avoid a second machine and just use one machine, just install FSX on a separate drive that has its own separate OS installation. Is this even possible? What I've come up with so far is a big, NO. I have two hard drives on one computer each with their own copy of XP Home. Even when I boot up to the second copy of XP Home, the computer is still recognizing the original XP Home hard drive as the main C: drive. If I install FSX on the other hard drive, am I right in assuming that FSX files are still going to g…

I have recently upgraded to a new system that would allow me to play FSX (see specs in my signature). However, I still feel that performance is not what it should be and I really cannot find out what it is. Yesterday I noticed that when I opened up the task manager while running FSX, only one of the four cores (I have HT turned OFF) was at a 100% while the others were not; overall I was using like 50% of CPU power. Still, in the following setting, I could not manage to keep my framerate steady at 25 FPS, as it was in the upper teens:PMDG MD-11 at FSDreamteam's ZurichXREXWOAI Traffic @ 70%FPS Limiter set to 25 FPSI have used NickN's guide to tweak my FSX. I've been having a problem with my internet. At first I thought it may be a fluke. But this is the 4th time it's happened this year. The problem is my connection speed/ping. For instance, normally I run a 50ms ping to the Twin Cities site I use for testing. But four times so far this year it has jumped to 150-190ms. The bad ping/slower internet browsing won't go away until I've completely reset my modem and router (by that I mean unplug everything and slowly re-connect it all). I have Charter cable, 5mbps down, 1.5 mbps upI run a Motorola Surfboard 5120 modemand a Netgear WGR614 v8 wireless routerBoth my PC and my wife's PC connect to the router. Our Wii and PS3 als…

Hello,I have always understood that FSX needs to be on a separate drive than the OS. As a result, I have design my new system to have a 300GB VelociRaptor for FSX. The OS will be on a 1TB Caviar Black.I have recently been told something completly different and I wanted to get some other opinions. What I have head makes sense - FSX should be installed in the default path on the same drive as the OS. If you don't FSX will continually search for files. Eventually, it should find what it is looking for but it will look on the C drive first.Any opinions? I'd hate to spend the money on a separate drive if it is doing nothing for me.Thanks.

I was reading an article on AnandTech when I came across this. I'm not trying to start a flame war here, I just want to save people from damage of valuble hardware that can cost lots of money to replace! Some people report this happening even on low or no overclocks, it has something to do with the surface area of the contact pins and the amount of power drawn. Since there is less contact on the pin-less design, if there is a high current then more heat may be generated and damage the socket and CPU!http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i...p;cp=1#comments

Which is the better value and offers the best overclock performance?I want to do a final upgrade to replace my system's Q6600 cpu. This is the last possible upgrade I can do to the motherboard. Per NewEgg, the Q9650 (3.0ghz) is $329. and the Q9550 (2.83ghz) is $219. Is the .17ghz worth the $110.00? I do overclock and have the Q6600 (default 2.4ghz) overclocked at a stable 3.3ghz on air. The new cpu will also be overclocked. Thanks for your replies.
