Hi all.I'm looking to upgrade shortly, and was wondering which component(s) are stressed the most by FSX? Am I better off getting a cheaper CPU and getting more memory for example.Thanks.

Hey everyone: After endless searches on the web trying to find information on upgrading my cpu with no answers I have come here to ask the help of those who are much more knowledgeable than I have. Here are my system specs. Compaq Presario SR2264WMAMD Athlon 64 processor 3800+ 2.4 Ghz4 .00 GB32 bit operating system windows vistaI have upgraded the video card to a 8600 GT and as you can see I added 2 more gigs of memory from the original 2. Upgraded the power supply from 300 watts to 630 watts. But for the life of me I can not find any information on a compatible upgrade for the cpu for this machine. If anyone can help me upgrade this cpu for this machine i would b…

24hours ago my Coolermaster Real Power 1250W PSU went bang. Very loudly. It tripped the fuse and everything in the room went off. It was 13 months old.Today I replaced it with a Corsair HX1000W and was as relieved as I've ever been that nothing else was damaged. The Corsair is much, much, MUCH quieter and being modular takes up much less room in my case - the Coolermaster was like a pair of mating octopuses! However, I really need to know why the Coolermaster blew like that. My whole system is on a Belkin surge protected extension lead which should rule out a power spike. I know there could be any number of reasons but I am now terrified that the new one will do the same s…

As I have read in previous posts, FSX is heavily dependent on clock speed rather than number of cores. Will I see any improvement if I upgraded from my current system which is an AMD dual core X2 6000 (3.1Ghz) to an Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400? My current system has 4 gig RAM and evga 9600 GT Low Power GPU. Thanks for all your advice.

Hi,may I ask if you would consider it worth to upgrade my system (Intel Q9650-4x3.0GHz, NVIDIA 8800 Ultra, 4 GB DDR-3-1066) to an i7-975 and an NVIDIA GTX 295? According to common benchmarks I should expect a "general" increase in performance of 150-200%. But what does it mean in FPS in FSX? Are there special recommendations regarding motherboard and RAM? What's the best HDD currently on the market? Is it better to use Vista or Windows 7? I tried Vista 64 2 years ago but gave up as I couldn't see any real performance improvement but a lot of incompatibilities of various addons. Many thanks in advance, Thomas

I have FSX installed and running on the new system, see specs in signature and have been completey blown away by the performance. Initial test flights in vanilla FSX with all sliders maxed were giving 70 - 120 FPS.I am a photoscenery nut and using TileProxy, its rock solid at 25 FPS locked, 150 kts airspeed and fantastic scenery as far as you can see. The level of differnce between the old ( no slouch itself) and new machine is awesome and really suprised me. Anyway, just wanted to thanks before I go off and wet myself again in excitement!!Cheers, Mark

I recently upgraded from an Intel E6400 to a quad core Q9550 using a BIOS updated Asus P5W DH Deluxe, this with Windows 7 64-bit and have had nothing but failure trying to use FSX SP2. I have a GeForce 8800 GTS with up to date drivers. The E6400 had no problem with Win 7 and FSX,had lots of sucessful flying, not with the Q9550 however, nothing but computer freezes within 5-20 min. of any attempted flight. I have read online about problems using a quad core with the P5W. Comments? I have update every driver I can, including the chip set, Intel i975's.Randy Jura, KPDX

My new computer is less than a year old, and as big an improvement as my expensive "impulse buy" from Best Buy was, I still have to face its limitations. Are we to to the point where you can place an order with Dell and get a $2000-ish computer that will run FSX with everything maxed out? With high FPS at large airports with complex airliners? If not, how long can I expect to wait? Sorry, but building my own system is out of the question.

Has anyone here ever overclocked a E6850, and if so, how much did you successfully OC it? I've been trying with mine but haven't had much success in gaining anything. Of course I'm not well versed in the proper technique.Jim

Replacing motherboard. Removed CPU fan and see that there is residue from the thermal pad on the CPU and the fan mating surfaces. Before I mess up the nice flat surfaces what is the best technique to remove the old thermal pad stuff?

Friends,I am running an E6700 at 3.6 gHz. I am currently unemployed and cannot afford a new system, i.e., the new generation of processors, mb, etc. I am using 4 gigs of memory (with the 3gig switch) under XP Pro 32. Which oc'd processor (given the socket of the 680i) would give me the best performance increase ... or is it even WORTH IT to try? I am not even knowledgeable as to which processors will and will not work in the 680i, though I know the "I" series requires a different MB.I lost track of what the consensus was on quad core. Meaning, all things remaining equal is the dual or quad the best performer for FSX, and then again, what is the fastest one I can use…

My system is about 2 years old and can't buy a new one for a while unless I want to be divorced. I was thinking about maybe just getting a better CPU than I have now but don't know what would be an improvement. I currently have a Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 @ 3.00 GHz 1333FSB (no OC). It is on a 780i motherboard with a 775 socket.Does anyone have an idea what better CPU would work in this setup? I would like to overclock this one but everytime I think about it I chicken out because of my limited experience in these matters. Any advice would be appreciated including any "how to" info on overclocking my current system.Thanks.Jim

Ok.... FINALLY I did it... After months of saving up money, doing research, asking a zillion questions on forums like this; I just filled in my order on internet and hit the [ORDER] button... :( Unfortunately the graphicscard is not on stock, so I guess I have to wait for maybe a full week until I get it :( :( So, this is what I'm gonna get:Intel CORE I7-920 2.66GHZ (will overclock to hopefully 4GHz)Asus MB/Rampage II Extreme X58 LGA1366 Corsair XMS3 Dominator 6GB DDR3 3X2GB DDR3-1600 CL 7-7-7-20 Core i7 Memory Kit Scythe Mugen 2 SCMG-2000Sapphire RADEON HD 5870 1GB DX11 PCI-E 2XDVI HDMI ATI EYEFINITY IN 3x Samsung 1000GB Samsung HD103SJ Microsoft Win Ult 7 64-bit Dut…

This is probably something stupid I have overlooked, but I cant get one of the disks on my new PC to show up in the "my computer" screen. It shows up if you go to disk management and is recorded as disk 3, healthy NFTS partition etc and also shows up in Acronis. But not in my computer. I formatted it from disk management when installed. Can anyone help?cheers, Mark

Hi everyoneHave been slowly getting a handle on my system and have a question or two about heat and the i7 975 processor. I downloaded OCCT and ran a stress test on the cpu and found the cpu temps climbed to almost 80C in about 5 minutes. I decided to kill the test at that stage. I must point out that I have not overclocked the system yet.Do the temps that relate to this OCCT test also relate to what is likely to be happening while FSX is running?I have the cpu on a ASUS P6T deluxe V2 mb and there is a large fan that sits over the top of the cpu obviously trying to keep the heat down. Is this doing a really poor job of cooling the processor or do I now need to look at…

Hi,I don't think this has been covered before as a search revealed nothing.I'm an FSX user who's just built an i5 rig. Still getting to know it.I came across Nick_N's thead about tweaking the FSX.cfg file using an i7 and HT.The i5, hasn't got HT. In tast manager, I can't right-click on the fsx.exe process to set the affinity. Would setting the affinity mask to 15 make FSX work on all 4 cores <---is that even possible.Any other tweaks that i5 users are using? On a side note, when I did a clean install of FSX on Win 7 x64, I was getting FPS between 100-200. After install of SP1, that dropped to 20-40 fps before installing 3rd party software. Was there a glitch or have a s…

This may be nothing to do with the OC. Q6600 overclocked to 3.0 GHz (may go higher later), cooled with Thermalright Ultra-120. Overclocked DDR3-1600 as well, system seems to run stable other than FSX. I have always had "stutters" of some type, but now I get actual pauses where the sound disappears and the sim stops- almost like the entire PC is pausing, but I only see this in FSX. It's been a while since I over-clocked but this "pausing" is more recent, so may not be related. Thanks for any suggestions, Bruce.

Hi,I was wondering if anyone is running the I5 and a 260 nvidia card. I am looking at this for my new rig and would like to know how it is for FPS in FSX and payware addons. As well i am going to run a 64 bit OS, 4 GB of DDR3 1333MHZ. If anyone is running a system like this I would appreciate there input.ThanksWilliam

Hi guys,I am at a stage of preparing to put a new PC together within a budget of course. My original idea was going to be something like a Core 2 Duo CPU but then I thought about the i7. However, the guy that gave me the quote who is also fairly into FS himself seemed to be under the impression that for FS9 the i7 would not be ideal and that there would be a bottleneck in performance created. He is also basing my system spec on some of the Jetline Systems PC's and according to their performance guide chart, the i7 is low on performance for FS9 compared to the Core 2 Quad. So he then put a quote together for a system based on the Core 2 Quad 9550 - unfortunately there seem…

Anyone else having problems with dual layer DVDs?I'd like to use them for my FSX backup, but frequently have problems when trying to access previously burned disks.I don't have issues with other formats, so don't really suspect the actual recorder.Any advice welcome. Thanks
