Looking to hear from some other tech's on this site.I've been into Flight Simulator since the fs98 days, and have had them all.. I know what it took to get FS9 running smoothly with my current system which is outdated now..I can't run FSX at all so I am ready to retire my current rig and start building a new one. My dilemma comes that I will be buying piece by piece untill I get what I want as I cannot afford to buy it all at once. I have read numourous posts here and most seem to say stay away from AMD and go with the Intel i7 920 processor. My local computer store here in Nova Scotia stocks the 2.66Ghz 920. How do I know if this is "Stepping D0" which most people recomm…

Hello Had this plane a week now and I am impressed but there is somethign ruining the enjoyment of it to the point were I have now spent 4-5 hours trying to sort it by googling, re installing, defragging etc but to no avail. The problem is that each time I fly sound crakles and pops can be heard. They happen reguarly and are as loud as the engine sound it self, often they repeat at the exact same time as if in a loop say every 5 seconds. Usually they are from an out side view but sometimes it happens in the cockpit and are very off putting to the extent that I have now decided it annoys me too much so I stopped flying the plane . I have read various post around the net and…

Hi EveryoneI am having an issue with a monitor I have had for a few months. It is a LG W2442PA and the issue I am having is that I try to set the refresh rate at 60Hz but every time I apply the settings it reverts back to 59Hz. I just downloaded the most current drivers thinking there may have been a bug with the originals but still no dice. Does anyone know what is likely to be going on here.CheersTim

Just upgraded to a system based around an Intel i5, a Gigabyte GA-P55M-UD2, and 4Gb (2 x 2Gb) of 1600 9-9-9-24 Corsair XMS3 memory. At the current time, I have my BCLK at 185 and my multiplier at X21 for a total speed of 3.885 Ghz. I currently have my VCore at 1.375v, my VTT (QPI) at 1.37v, my PLL at 1.80, and my vDimm at 1.65v. My plan was to go at least 200 on the BCLK and to back off on the multiplier to 20, while turning off Speedstep (EIST), Tubo Mode, C1E, and C-States, giving me a stable 4.0 Ghz. I am using a very good CoolerMaster CPU cooler (cpu heat is not a problem) and (CoolerMaster) power supply (550 watt - with a meter that barely reads 200 watts at full loa…

Hello everyone and happy new year !Here is my problem, i have a Asus Rampage II Gene with a I7-920 and 6 go of OCZ DDR3 PC3-12800/ 1600MHz / Platinum XTC / Triple Channel Kits with a timing of 7-7-7-24When i overclock in the bios and use the "CPU Level-up" option to 3.2 mhz and leave other parameters to auto, everything is fine, one hour + of Memtest is ok , OCCt cpu test ok; When i use NickN method (http://forums1.avsim.net/index.php?showtopic=264118&hl=for+nickn) to overclock higher like, 3.6 mhz and add 7-7-7-24 in "DRAM Timing Control", OCCt test is still ok, temps around 70/72 degrees but Memtest gives me error messages after 5 minutes ?I am a little at los…

I am thinking about upgrading I have a 9800 GTX + at the moment in a system with a Q6600 at 3.4Ghz with 4GB of RAM. I am thinking of upgrading only the CPU, RAM, Board and Operating System to the following.I7 920 @ 4.0GHz (this is guaranteed btw and part of the purchase)6GB RAMAsus Rampage II X58 moboWindows 7 64 Home PremiumBearing in mind that FSX is heavily CPU loaded and not so much GPU can I get away with keeping the Graphics card here and not upgrading that right away and still get a significant performance increase with this setup?(No raptors or SSDs will be purchased, I am considering these upgrades along with the GPU later IF it turns out I need them)ThanksCraig

My FSX NAV radio ident sounds have gone out recently and I'd very much appreciate suggestions from forum members on possible fixes. The applies to all aircraft I've tested, both defaults and add-ons, with radios properly tuned and clearly receiving, e.g., NAV1 or NAV2 when tracking an ILS or VOR, MKR when the marker beacon lights are flashing for OM and MM, etc. All other sounds appear to be working okay (ATC, environment, flaps, gear, etc.), but for instrument procedures the aural NAV idents are very helpful. My basic setup is Windows 7 64-bit on an I7 and 6 gb RAM. l I've been using these functions fine with a Creative SB X-Fi card in XP, Vista and Windows 7 since la…

After 6 years I am finally in a position to buy a new computer and am so excited! I've spent the last 3 hours looking through old posts for comments and suggestions and am asking for your help. These are the two that I'm currently looking at with a budget of around $2000. I will be using it for FS9 and have no intentions of upgrading to FSX. The reason I'm deciding between these two computers is because I'm nervous about making the jump from XP to Win 7. I understand that there is a huge difference between the two but the XP computer is the only one that I can find that you can still buy brand new and customize even though it is the more expensive one. Have any of y…

I recently picked up FSX and realize my system is a little outdated. I would like suggestions as to what to upgrade. Also, would prefer quiet (fanless) video card.Current system is:Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L link 1E6750 2.66ghzMSI GeForce 8600GTS4GB (4x1gb) Crucial ballistic DDR2 800I'm thinking video card is the first item. But don't know if I need to upgrade CPU as well. Whatever help would be appreciated.

Hi all,I built a new system for FSX. It has an Intel i5-750 with an aftermarket cooler. I put the sim under heavy stress by sliding the Autogen and Density sliders to 'Extremely Dense', flew out of Boston/Logan in a rain storm using the 3D cockpit...and I watched the CPU temerature. The highest it got under heavy load was 49 deg C. Under less-demanding conditions in FSX, it runs between 30-40 deg C. It idles at 20 deg C.Is approaching 50 deg C under heavy stress a cause for concern? I'm fairly new to building computers. I used Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste on the CPU and followed their website directions for i5/i7 processors where you run a line of thermal paste along the…

HelloI have been running FSX on an old machine and want to upgrade to get better performance. Until recently I've looked at a brand-new i7/920 and expect that would run me around 1500$ CDN. A second alternative would be to run on a PC I bought two years ago, after some upgrading. Below is the current config for that PC: Mobo/CPU/GPU/Memory/SW At the bottom of this message are upgrade CPU options that I found on the ASUS website. Here are my questions: Which CPU's do you consider are good price/performance options (I expect opinions may vary quite a bit on this!) Is 8GB of memory overkill? Would 4GB be enough? (I expect I will have t…

Hello, I've got a pretty week processor, I won't get into the details here because it isn't really important.. Im on a Pentium 4, running FS9 great with default stuff but crappy with PMDG and Flytampa :(Just wandering, is it possible to upgrade to something like an i7 (I think that's what they're called) without changing the RAM / video card etc..? Probably not, but just in case I'm asking. Thanks,

Option 1: An used, but in decent shape Dell/Sony 19" Flat Triniton CRT for only $30. I had the exact same monitor 2 years ago and it was a decent monitor, putting out 85hz @ 1280x1024 res. Since then I've used several CRT monitors and none of them came close anywhere of this 19" CRT monitor in terms of image quality.Option 2: Brand new HP L2445M 24" LCD panel with a native res of 1920x1200 (16:10) , 5ms and 1000:1. Viewing angle is 140 degrees. I couldn't find any reviews of this monitor, however this is most probably a TN panel with so-so features, but it's only $229 CAD, and its huge size is tempting. I've no experience with LCD panels, never used them.Which one would …

Hi All,Finally getting around to upgrading my computer. For my FS9 dedicated drive, I have a 74 gig 1.5 SATA raptor. Great drive in 2006, but it is SATA 1.5. It is still fast, of course, in terms of access and latency and all, but it is a SATA 1.5 drive and I just have no idea how my data FS is actually pumping out. I'm not sure I want to pony up the cash for a new raptor (Since SSD drives are starting to sound attractive), but I do have a couple of spare WD Caviar Black drives I could use as my dedicated FS drive. So, here's the question: should I keep my old 1.5 SATA raptor for FS2004 drive, or, should I swap it out for a 640gb Caviar Black drive I have from another mac…
