Would it make much of a difference upgrading from my 6850 to the e8600. That is the most processor my will support.

Just got a Dell XPS Studio I7 860 2.8 with a Radion HD 5700 video card. This is to replace my old Dell. Tried things out with the Captain Sim 757 and was getting 3 FPS ! This is with the same sliders that was getting me high teens / 20s on my old rig. All things being equal, I figured I should see performance improve, but now I'm wondering if I have Made A Terrible Mistake. Where to start?

Installed new motherboard. Had bad IDE connector and needed to put Windows7 on a different drive. That worked. Now need to delete the old Windows folder. But, it is locked. I think there is a convoluted process to change permissions but was hoping that there is a simple way. Running as administrator.

Hi GuysI'm looking to upgrade my current system to one which will give FSX a "good run for its money" and noticed this bundle available at ebuyer:http://www.ebuyer.com/product/198201 Normally I would shy away from bundles as they very rarely tick every box. However, this one seems to for me. Your opinions would be most appreciated. Also, what PSU and cooler would you recommend that would handle any future o/c?Many thanksGary

Hi everyone, I currently have the following system: Pentium D 2.8GHz, 2Gb ram, BFG 9600GT, WinXP 32 and was looking at building an i7 860, 4Gb DDR3 1600MHz ram, BFG GTX260 (on Gigabyte P55M motherboard, Win7 32). I was wondering what kind of performance to expect with such a system in FS9. Right now I can run FS9 with all settings (including traffic) maxed and get around 15-20fps but this drops to single digits with add-on planes (PMDG etc.) or scenery. Thanks,Al

Currently my CPU is overclocked to 3.7Ghz - it came that way from my PC supplier. Stock is 2.8Ghz. From the start it performed reasonably well in FSX with high settings but the framerates took a tumble at complex add-on airports, typically diving to around 13 fps. Even some default airports in high detail areas like KJFK scored in the high teens, but I could get 30-50 fps out in the countryside. This is all with complex payware heavies like the PMDG 747, ConcordeX, LDS 767 etc. After applying *******/Bojote's recommended settings, pinned elsewhere in this forum, my countryside fps started spending a lot more time at the upper end of the scale and beyond, but the figures at…

Folks,Has anyone heard or read about any reviews or forums testing involving the new MSI Big Bang Fuzion Motherboards that support the Lucid Hydra Technology (involves being able to fit Video Cards from multiple vendors)? I know that FSX isnt too good with Multiple GPU cards but I am wondering how the Lucid Technology may now perform with FSX?Thank you.Paul

I noticed that many people here use the i7 920 processor overclocked to 4.2 GHz. Is it possible to buy a system that uses this processor and has already been overclocked to 4.2 GHz? I don't feel comfortable doing it myself so I thought perhaps a major computer supplier could do the overclocking for me. Any ideas? Thanks!Airbus

I stumbled across this on another site (thanks Neil!)--a registry setting that allows you to remap the input/output jack assignments on the Realtek audio controllers used on a great many motherboards now. If you have a four or five-speaker audio system, you may have noticed that the only way to get FS to use the rear speakers is to enable "speaker fill" in the drivers, where the driver synthesizes a rather fuzzy signal for the rear speakers. Using this mod, you can reassign the rear speaker jack on your motherboard to duplicate the front-speaker outputs, giving you the same high-quality sound on the rear speakers as on the front. Since you can then run the speakers wit…

Hi,I am considering buying a 1T Western Digital 64mb cache hard drive as my new primary drive. Do you fine gentlemen think it will work well with my Asus P6TD Deluxe MB and 6G of 1600 mhz ram and the specs below? I was considering a 300G velociraptor but decided not to for now. Does anyone know if the WD 64mb cache version is much faster in reality than the 32mg cache version? Will standard cables connect to the MB or do I need something different?Thank you for the advice.Stephen

Hi all, currently i have a C2D E6750 (2.66 Ghz) at stock speed, 4 gb ddr2, 9800 GTX+, vista 32 bit and am looking at several options for an upgrade:-stick in a C2D E8600 processor (3.4 Ghz)-stick in a C2Q 9550 processor (2.8 Ghz)-toss my current mobo and go for an AMD Phenom II X4 965 with new mobo, retaining my current ddr2 ram.As you can see my budget is limited (max 250 euro's), the three options above allow me to stay within budget with some clever shopping.Which of the options do you consider the best option for improving FSX (actually, is any improvement to be expected at all?) ?I do use stuff like Ultimate Terrain, A2A stratocruiser, Track IR, flightsim commander 8,…

I was thinking about the microstutters I was having with my i7 920 4.2Ghz/GTX 480 combo, and I am wondering if this is due to some sort of hardware latency. I am using an affinity mask of 14 to help reduce thread collisions, and I have assigned all programs that run along with FSX to core0. My FSB is running at 200Mhz, but I left the PCIe bus at the standard 100Mhz. I read a thread on the i7 series and microstutters, and NickN made a statement about PCIe bus latency:"The primary fix (right now) for a clocked i7 (3.6-4GH) system on a 64bit OS and a GTX 285 (or equal) vide card appears to be to disable HT, set a Texture Bandwidth Multiplier of 80 or 90 (most are finding …

Hi, I have followed NickN's overclocking advice for o/c'ing my i7 930 to 4.2 ghz. I referenced his info listed in the following thread at simvation.com:http://205.252.250.26/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1263037900/0For a 4 ghz o/c, he suggests the following for cpu voltage and qpi/dram voltage respectively:Cpu Voltage: 1.30-1.35vqpi/dram voltage: 1.35-1.40vI wanted to know if those two settings should be the same? I have seen some use a matched setting (i.e. 1.35 for both settings). If I was to increase cpu voltage to 1.36, should qpi/dram also be 1.36, or could that stay at 1.35?At the moment I am testing to see the lowest cpu voltage possible for stable operation at 4.…

Hi All , I have been using my old desktop for a long time for fs98,fs2002... and then fs2004...did all the tweaks for max fps and graphics . Then time came for my two laptops ....bush flying in sf260 and short haul flights in a320 ...around the globe ...always wanted to run fsx with max settings, max graphics , max fps and max addons to make it as realistic as it could be ....now i have decided to buy a new RIG....(Desktop) specially for FSX and any more versions to come (dreaming .....zzzz)I stay in New Delhi (India) and planning to get a assembled RIG. Please write your suggestions for system specifications that you think are best suited for fsx . Note - I prefer Intel …

I was reading a thread a few weeks ago about FSX and hyperthreading and it said that if you have an i7 and want to use all 8 threads then you have to do this:[JOBSCHEDULER]AffinityMask=255 Some people say it doesn't make FSX make use hyperthreading and it made no difference to them. I tried that setting and I noticed that textures load faster than before adding that setting on my i7 920 with hyperthreading on. Now I can make FSX actually run at a little higher frame rate than without hyperthreading turned on if I use this setting and lower the Fiber Frame Time Fraction setting where as before, hyperthreading would make FSX run a little slower on my PC. Am I going to ha…

I just ordered a new computer having Windows 7 as the OS. My current (old) computer has XP. Is there a way to copy all the data in my FSX folder from the old drive (including scenery add-ons, etc.) to the new drive? Or, will I have to manually install FSX to the new Hdd using my original DVDs?Thanks.
