Has anyone gone from a i5-750 to i7-4770k or a similar jump in generations? My i5-750 is oc'd to 4.0ghz and I can't go any higher. I'm considering upgrading with this route plus going from a GTX 570 to a 770 but I'm really torn as to whether it's worth it or not. I also play other games so it's really tempting. Thoughts?

Hi All, Here's my first post on Avsim regarding my first ever home build (FSX oriented). I still need to choose a Mother Board. Hopefully my parts list so far isn't too far off. Please take a look and let me know what you think regarding my current parts and a Mother Board suggestion. I've been on stock pc's since 2003 when I first started simming. I can't wait to finally build a machine that doesn't crash! As this is my first build please don't be afraid to criticize my wishlist! http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=20158611 Thank you! Phil

I was puzzled as to why my puter would kick in, then stop. So I restarted it, and again. Still it would just stop on its own, then after 5 or 7 trials it would not even start up the fans: *** The scream of silence *** As the phrase implies. It died. Then I took out the 500$ videocard and examined it. To my surprise there was a ton of liquid comming out of it. But where the heck would it get water? I am 30 feet from the bathroom ! And coffee is of the darkest black in my room. There was also some liquid traces on the MB. Odd thing eh? After a few minutes of chin thumbing, I thought: WATER COOLER !!!!!! Dambed. I did a thorough cleans…

Below we have a screen shot obviously GPU limited (the minor down spikes are from me task switching to Windows), this is rare in FSX. Thousand dollar question is this...what fps gain would there be from a video card upgrade?

Now conventional wisdom suggests an SSD for the operating system and sim of choice whilst a 7200 rpm (or better) 3.5" HDD for the data. Why then do I enquire about Seagate's third generation hybrid drives which, wait for it, feature a 2.5" 5400 rpm form factor in capacities of 500 Gb or 1Terra, utilising 8 Gb of Nand. And this is promoted as being designed for Laptop use. Well it's cheaper than the combination above, for one. It's faster than HDD's at booting into Windoze and FS9, my sim of choice. Being one, small, item it is easier to fit into and keep cool in desktop case and less obstructive to airflow For the life of me I can't really see a downside to…

I pretty much completed my install of FSX on a new build where OS & FSX reside on one 500Gb SSD. I'd like to make a complete back up so that if the SSD fails I can either just plug in the new drive that I copied to I can just connect the backed up drive and then clone back to a replacement SSD or what have you. I've done this in the past using Seagate Disk Wizard I think it was called, which was an Acronis variant I recall and worked great. I don't know if there are idiosyncrasies when going from SSD>HDD or back from HDD>SSD so this is why I ask today. All help much appreciated! Noel

I am currently debating on what HD setup i should go with for my new build. At the moment my plan is a WD black 500GB for the OS and other stuff, and then a WD velociraptor 500GB for FSX. However, after reading some great things i am thinking about going with an SSD. Given the price, i would get a 240-250GB SSD for FSX and keep the WD black for the OS. Is 240GB enough capacity for FSX if i plan on having a good amount of addon aircraft and scenery? And second, is the performance gain by going to the SSD worth the loss in capacity? If the only difference is that the SSD gives lower load times, then i would rather stick with the velociraptor. However, if the SSD provides a …

Hi, Basically I am in the market for a new computer when the PMDG 777 is released.. I am using a Q6600 @3.6Ghz with 4GB Ram and a Nvidia 9800 GFX card at the moment. It runs Windows 8 at the moment and to be honest does most things I need it to, but for games and FSX it does really struggle. I don't just play FSX, I'm often playing things like Civilization V which my machine struggles with later on in the game and other strategy games that are similar. Other than that it's word processing, e-mail, web browsing. My plan is to retire the Q6600 and turn it into a NAS.. I'll probably under clock it to about 1.5GHz and literally have it sit on my LAN as NAS…

I intend to build a new computer based on a haswell CPU. I wonder if it matters which motherboard you get ? If so what should you look for. What do you think about this one claimed to be a 'good card for step in and in the performance segment' http://www.dustinhome.se/product/5010744960/asus-z87-c-z87-s-1150-atx/

Hey, So I have made a few posts about this in the past year or so, each time never actually making a buy. Now its for real. I will be getting a new computer for my birthday in the fall (September). I have about $1,200.00 USD dollars to spend, more on the lower side of $1,200.00. I know what I want, and what I need to run on this new computer, but I dont want to go overboard on things I dont need to, and skimp out on things I do need. I have a couple builds in mind. If I had my way I would build my own computer, but my parents are worried if I mess up there is no warranty or anything like that. Currently I am running the following disgusting specs on a Dell Vostro…

Hi all. Its time to upgrade some of my pc components. I've decided on the new i5 Haswell 4670k and an Asus Z87 Plus mobo. What I can't decide on is memory. I was thinking 8gb and keeping the price under £100. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Was doing some overclocking tests, and it all went bonkers, so I reset to "optimised defaults". This is what happened... The CPU now refuses to run at stock frequency and voltage and seems to be doing miraculous things. Doesn't matter how many times I reset to defaults. Also, my old 4.5 GHz settings now cause crashes. In Prime... Core temps: 69 77 77 71 So perfectly acceptable temp, but the frequency is 4.6 GHz, and the voltage is varing from 1.488 - 1.504. Ambient temp is 25.3C. This should be impossible for Ivy Bridge, surely at 1.5 volts it should be overheating and shutting down? I'm baffled. It's not a voltage error in CPUZ, because the Asus m…

For as long as I've had my current flight sim computer, it has had a Creative sound card. I don't think I've ever run FSX without one. I know nothing about sound cards, and I only got it in the first place because I assumed that by providing a dedicated piece of hardware to process sound, it would provide more performance overhead for programs such as FSX. I've been having some unique problems with Multicrew Experience, and despite working very hard with the extremely attentive developers, we were unable to get to the root of it. Just to eliminate all possible variables, I've reverted to using the Realtek Audio that is native on my motherboard. In fact, I've even …

Hello I hope I have posted this in the right forum, i am new and I am finding this all a bit daunting. I am very interested in purchasing FSX but I am not sure if it will work on my set up, A few years back I had FS9 on my old PC and wondered if I could make the step up. I don't expect to run it with all the fancy things on so any advice would be very helpful, My set up is as follows. E5500 Dual core 2.8ghz 4 Gb Ram Ati Radeon 4870 512mb Windows Vista MS 7504 VP mobo. Kind regards Darran

I have been told that for a ASUS Z87-C Z87 S-1150 ATX motherboardI can choose between these two memory modules Kingston 8 Gb 2400 MHz http://www.dustinhome.se/product/5010665870/kingston-8gb-2400mhz-ddr3-cl11-xmp-hyperx-beast-2x4gb/ and Corsair 8 Gb 1866 MHz http://www.dustinhome.se/product/5010549888/corsair-8gb-ddr3-1866mhz-2x4gb-cl9-vengeance/ prices about the same. First impulse might be to pick Kingston for the higher speed but two things I have heard might render that a mistake 1) Kingston has CL11 and Corsair CL9 And the lower the CL the better I understand so here Corsair is the better or does it matter less than clock speed ? 2) I have heard…

Nick N suggested a hardware list for MS FSX. After reading all suggested guides, etc., I have created a Newegg wish list which is included here. I submit this to the group for their puusal/verification as the wish list is large and expensive-don't want to order the wrong thing. I have everything except the hard drives-I have a question about them... I want to go with the SSD High performance as Nick has suggested but question how many and what size... If I read Nick correctly, I will need 2 each of the 500GB drives and 1 each of the 1TB SIZE drives? Thanks Bill Cart Item List: Qty. Product Description Savings Total Price 1 Intel Core i7-4770K…

Hi all, Just putting together my shopping list for my build and I'm a little stuck in a couple of areas. Motherboard and Ram. I've got together a few contenders I'm just a little stuck. So with the motherboard my main contender at the moment is: MZI Z87 MPower Then in no particular order I've also been considering Asus Z87 Sabertooth Gigabyte Z87X-UD5H Asus ROG Maximus VI Hero MSI GD65 Gaming Maybe Asrock Z87 Extreme 6 which is a cheaper option.I'll be running a 4770K under a H110 and plan on overclocking to hopefully around 4.5. I'll also be running a GTX 780. Plus just ordered one of the Korean 1440P monitors too. I really like the MPower, Not s…

Hey guys, recently I am coming across a problem where my FS 2004 is taking longer to load, and once it gets past the splash screen, the screen is black for about 10-15 seconds and then finally loads, also loading time is a little slower in selecting aircraft, flightplan, etc. Also, when I am in the flight and I go to slew, there is a slight freeze when I go in and out of slew. Anyone think this is an outdated graphics card driver issue? Or is the issue somewhere else?? I just remembered that I havent checked for an updated graphics card driver in a bit, so I am going to do that tonight. Any thoughts / comments about this issue would be greatly appreciated! Btw, I have w…

I've had my build up and running for about nine months and the OC is stable and FSX runs a pretty consistent 28-30FPS. I recently installed and activated the Intel Rapid Start, Rapid Storage and LucidLogic MVP motherboard features. I use a 16Gb partition as a hibernation mirror in front of my system drive (WD 1Tb Black). I also use a second 20Gb partition as my iRST cache. My Win7 load times are about 1/3 of their previous WD 1Tb drive times. A cold and dark restart takes less than a minute after the WIN7 blossom screen opens. My question is other than speeding up the system loading from cold and dark or from hibernation, is there anyway to benchmark these features a…
