I was just thinking of all the upgrades I've gone through the years for Flight Simulation and how I should buy more powerful parts and perhaps be able to put off "stupid" upgrades: 1982 Apple ][, floppies, green screen - school computer, so not mine 1987 AT&T 6300 (Intel 8086 at 8 mhz) with 5.25" 10 meg hard drive, green screen, 2400 baud modem circa 1989 Started building my own - Intel 80386SX 16 mhz (or was it 33?) 30 meg 3.5" hard drive on a card, paper white monitor (I could not afford a color one yet as I was in college), 2400 modem. 1996 Intel Pentium 3 @ 450 mhz. I already have an SSD for both Windows 8 and FSX (120 GB, way too small for both), so am contemplating purchasing a new SSD for FSX only- maybe 250 GB. Still deciding on size. But can anyone recommend a good SSD vendor? Or any to stay away from? I'm looking at New Egg, and most vendor names I see are familiar from the memory product world. Thanks for any ideas, Bruce.

  4. Sounds rediculous, but a couple days ago my laptop fell off our ottoman and landed screen side down. Ever since then, this thing has been running fsx perfectly with an average of 30 fps in the NGX. This is the same laptop that before the drop was getting 3-4 FPS on the ground and averaging 8 in the cruise with the NGX. I used to have to pause on landing to allow the ground textures to catch up with the plane! This is my travel laptop, it is 4 years old. What happened here? Is it possible this thing came out of the box with some hardware loosely connected or something? I'm at a loss as to how this blatant performance increase could be possible.

I have an i7 950K overclocked on air at 4.025GHz (175 x 23) with hyperthreading disabled. System has an NVIDIA GTX 660Ti GPU, Windows 7 64-bit, and 16GB RAM DDR3 rated at 1600MHz. I have stress tested the daylights out of this setup (OCCT CPU 2 hours, IBTv2 20 runs at maximum, Prime95 blend 24 hours) and it is rock solid and runs cool, the cores are no higher than 65c during full load. I run FSX in DX10 because it is smoother and looks better. My setup runs FSX/P3D mostly locked at 30fps although I get slowdowns to as little as 15fps in scenery heavy areas (OrbX PAKT with Return to Misty Moorings and FTX Global/FTX PNW). I usually see mid to low 20's fps in larger ci…

  6. I'm looking to make the leap from my current 5 year old HP netbook and FS9 to a solid FSX system to run complex addons, budget around 1k GBP. I'm using cyberpowers website to build a custom PC (may self build but want opinions from UK people on how much money that will really save). Here is what I have been able to juice out of my budget: CPU: Intel® Core™ i5-4670K Quad Core 3.40 GHz 6MB Cache LGA1150 + HD Graphics ***Overclockable XXX*** CS_FAN: Maximum Case Cooling Fans for your selected case [+10] FAN: Asetek 510LC Liquid Cooling system w/ 120mm Radiator (Asetek CPU Water Cooling ***Overclockable XXX***) HDD: 1TB SATA-III 6.0Gb/s Cache 7200RPM Hard Driv…

I'm having a bit of trouble recently with my Logitech Extreme 3d pro Joystick. I Have the flaps mapped to buttons 5 & 3, and the Elevator trim settings on 4 & 6, while the D-pad controls camera views. Recently, I have noticed that buttons 3 -> 6 seem to control rudder and/or views, and when pressed, as well as their mapped commands, rendering the Z-rotation useless. It is really annoying me, as it basically makes FSX unplayable. Any ideas? Yes, I have posted this in the Main Avsim hardware forum, but that forum seems 'dead'

  8. Hello, I am currently planning to enhance my FSX experience in a custom-built PC (homemade off course) and what I am thinking is a multi monitor set up with 3 1080p computer displays, with a joke, pedals, throttle quadrant, comm stack, and maybe one additional LCD display for instrumentation purposes. This is off course a rough draft because I am wondering what hardware selection would be best for this type of mini-cockpit set up. My budget is quite flexible but moderate. In that sense, this is the type of components that I am thinking in terms of hardware & software... 8GB RAM DDR3 1833MHz 3 1080p Displays + 1 display for instrument purposes. Saitek Pro …

i just upgraded my Q9550 OC 3.4GHZ and Gigabyte mb to a i5-3570, non-OC and ASROCK Extreme4 mb. Installed Win 7 64-bit, upgrades, Security Essentials, FSX and FSX SDK. Added highmemfix, 1920x1200x32, WideAspect=True and set to run in windowed mode with the menu showing. Frame slider set at unlimited. No other changse made to FSX. Weather is clear, date is august 1, 2013, time is 21:00 UTC, sitting for at 34 for takeoff from KSEA, engines off. Started up FSX and getting about 34-36 FPS looking forward sitting in the cockpit. Left, right and rear I get about 60 fps. I didn't expect the world, but this is only a couple more frame that I was getting with …

Iam under a h100 and with a Maximus VI hero and some old corsair vengence ram 8 gb (1600 mhz) Any tips ?? How does FSX handle at 4.3 ghz ??

I have a budget gaming system that I bought from Tigerdirect. After 8 months of simming, I've got the urge to upgrade the motherboard and processor to something that can be overclocked (I was thinking of a Z77 board suitable for a 3570K). I'll also want to upgrade the powersupply as it's a entry-level 500W unit. Some advice would be appreciated. It's a W8 machine, so is there a preferred manufacturer with solid drivers for W8? When swapping MoBos, are there applications that register against the hardware that are likely to crap out one me? Anything else to watch out for? I've never assembled a system from scratch or tried an upgrade beyond adding additional disk drive…

I have a pretty smooth sim, but still have one little annoyance. Not being a graphics genius, I would like to know what particular setting in ( I am guessing) either NV Inspector or FSX will affect or cause the appearance of momentary flashes of black patches on water and white patches on land almost exclusively only when at low altitude, usually when turning onto and on final approach. The white patches are especially, but not always, the add on airport I am approaching, such as Flightbeam KSFO. Your input would be much appreciated. Regards,

HI all I need some serious advice for a new computer. I am going to get a new computer however I am lost on what I should get. All I am going to have on this new system is FSX Deluxe gold addition running the PMDG queen, 777 and the new Aerosoft EGLL scenery and that is it. I never have a chance to fly a lot, Lucky if I get 1 flight a week in so I don't need the super duper machine I am sure some here run. Also the new build idea is not happening, I have not got the real time or the computer smarts to do it and a lot of the things I read on this forum regarding gaming computers is like a foreign language to me (yes I am a certified computer moron). So I …

I'm not naming my system like some people do (or at least, I don't have a good name for it yet) but I have decided to undertake a project to rebuild my system in a new case with many new parts (keeping drives and RAM, all else is new within the last 6 weeks or so). The motivation behind the project is to support SLI 780s and fully water cool the hottest components in the system, including CPU, graphics cards, and motherboard MOSFETs. I will have one water cooling loop for the CPU and the motherboard, and a totally separate loop to cool the 2 graphics cards. In order to accomplish this, I have purchased the following parts and will be receiving them over the next few day…

Hi guys, I'd like a bit of advice please. My flight sim pc started to do all sorts of weird things and I was thinking of upgrading the processor and memory to something a bit faster. However, as life has it, I built a new system instead but have restored the FSX systems that I'd previously backed up. My question is this. Now that I have all new hardware with the exception of the graphics card, would it be best to re-install FSX from scratch. My previous system was a Q9300 series dual core with 4Gb DDR2 RAM. My new System is: i7-3770K CPU @ 3.50 GHz Azrock Z77 Extreme Motherboard 8Gb DDR3 RAM Nvidia GTS450 Graphics Card. Apart from making sure eve…

  18. Here is the blow by blow concerning how to use the TIIM referenced by NickN in his FSX Bible on a Corsair Hydro Series H100i CPU Cooler, an Intel i4770k cpu and Coollaboratory Liquid Pro TIM (LMP). First, you have to use the #8 Nylon Washer modification to the H100i backplate installation for the LMP to work flawlessly. The reason for this is that when the LMP is applied it virtually has NO thickness. There are many references to a loose mount with the H100i with ASUS motherboards on the internet. Here is how to fix that: Backplate (unmodified) properly installed (cutouts around screws) ... Posts are too high ... Washers installed on backplate ... W…

After purchasing several add ons like AirHauler and FTX Global, I have renewed interest in FS. But as you can see my hardware is somewhat old (I'm getting stutters, flashing textures, shimmering, have to run low AA settings etc..). I've been given the go ahead to build a new system, but how much faster is PCI-E 3.0 over 1.0? Is there newer technology coming that will push the envelope (and prices lower) that I should wait for?

Hey guys, I've been thinking about a future upgrade to the i4770k (currently I have an i2600k oc to 4.5), but then starting hearing about the 3770k as being almost identical in performance and capable of better overclocks. I also heard that the 4770k is not very able to oc well. They seem to be pretty similar overall in pricing, so which would get me more mileage in fsx do you think? Thanks, Alex M.

Hello Simmers! So as of yet I run FSX on a laptop, however I have been considering an upgrade and I was wondering, in your opinions, what kind of system I would need to achieve what I would want (and benchmark what it would cost). The following is available under my specifications tab... I have been having issues where FSX does not recognize the nVidia Graphics Card, and instead recognizes the default Intel one, and although this is important I have read that although FSX does not read that it is installed the nVidia is the active one (I have forced nVidia to run for FSX), and that's for another time and another post. I run FSX on an Acer laptop, with an i7…

'Yet another question regarding a computer and its specs. Please bear with me. This has nagged me for several years but I'm just now getting around to asking about it. To make the story short, several years ago I built a computer to run FSX but then didn't like the way FSX ran compared to FS9. In all fairness I may have expected too much, set the sliders too high, or whatever. In any event I removed FSX from my hd and never looked back as I have been extremely happy with FS9 and the major $$$ I've spent on add-ons to make it look really good. But as more and more products come to market for FSX I'm thinking about going back to it - or at least adding it to my …

  24. Hey guys, I am currently running an i5 3570k @ 4.4ghz and getting around 25 - 30 FPS on the ground / low altitudes and well into the 40's in the air. 25. Hey, So I just got a new computer today with my main goal to run FSX as smooth as i can. I have done alot of research about hardware requirements and have learned that installing FSX on a separate SSD can help performance. My computer has a 1TB Western Digital hard drive, and also a 120GB Crucial M500 SSD. I was planning on dedicating the SSD to FSX with all of my add-ons and everything, but the SSD seems to be my main C drive and my 1TB WD hard drive is the D drive. My windows 7 is installed on the SSD (C Drive) and it seems to be my default drive at the moment where everything gets downloaded to. Does anyone know how to move everything to my 1TB WD hard driv…
