It seems I've read others show 100% CPU use, but when I open Win 7 Task Manager > Performance it is never that high--the combined level is in the 30-60% range combined. What do others see with this, and with what monitoring app?

Cleaning up old stuff in my new home, I found a bill for a rig I built up in 2003. Considering inflation, computing power is really cheaper now than it was 10 years ago. Comparing it to the price of components I have my eyes on today, the price of an Asus motherboard has not changed much 179 EUR for a P4C800 vs. 174 for an Z87PRO but the processor is 28% cheaper, 427 EUR for a P4 3.0 Ghz vs. 309 for a 4770k ! Good for us B) !

G'day, I have a question for you tech guys out there. Is it possible to transfer the contents of my hard drive (FSX installation, aircraft add-ons, scenery etc) to a new SSD simply by either copying the folder (copy/paste) or by backing up then restoring to the SSD? I just recently went through the pains of a complete Win7 / FSX re-installation and do not cherish the thought of having to go through that particular exercise all over again. My current setup is a Win7/64 Pro build with the OS residing on the C drive (an SSD) and FSX and other sundry programmes on the hard drive (1TB). I am intrigued by the idea of using an SSD for my FSX install as I have been blow…

Well, I'm back in business (I hope). After suffering inexplicable CTD,s and a couple of BSOD's, I finally ran a memtest confirming that one of my RAM modules was faulty. This was a fairly lengthy process involving testing each Module in the 1st memory slot by itself.I had to remove my aftermarket CPU heatsink and temporarily re instal the factory Intel one due to clearance issues. New RAM installed and tested. Everything including Window's 7 re installed updated and tweaked as per NickN's bible. Everything seems fine so far. This comes on the heels of a premature failure of my EVGA 670FTW GPU which was less than 6 months old. Can a brother catch a break already!! I left m…

Hi everyone, I'm planning on building my own PC in January. The primary goal will be to run FSX, but I will probably use it to stream media to my TV as well. I was hoping to get some feedback from everyone here. I'm pretty happy with the build and have worked with others to come up with the parts list, but I always appreciate additional feedback. I will probably hook up a bunch of peripherals over time (i.e. yoke, rudders, throttle, radio, etc.) I plan have this PC hooked up to 3 monitors and then install it on the Volair Sim flight chasis (http://www.volairsim.com/) The link to my parts list can be found here: http://pcpartpicker.com/user/GLaDOS/saved/2l5p T…

Hello Everyone, I am hoping to have the following computer built by CyberpowerPC (~$1300). The price looks very reasonable for what you get. The main purpose of this computer is for FSX. The computer is a 3.5 GHZ i7 with cyberpowerpc extreme overclock (~4.5 ghz?), cooled with a Corsair H60, 8gb of DDR3 2133 MHZ Ram, GTX 660 2GB EVGA Superclocked Video Card. A Z87 Motherboard, 500 watts Corsair power supply. (I have modified their basic Gamer Xtreme 3000 package, the detailed specs are listed below) As this is my first time having a computer built for FSX, does there appear to be any red flags or suggestions? It has come to my attention from reading the forums that FSX was built to run on a desktop. While it appears it can function on a laptop if I truly want to experience FSX for what it is I need to use it on a desktop so my question is where should I begin when looking to build a new desktop? Right now the current specs of the PC I am looking at are. i7-4960 (6 cores, 15 MB cache, overclocked up to 4.3 GHZ with something called turbo boost) Win 7 ultimate Memory: 32 GB (4X8 GB) Quad Channel DDR3 at 1600 MHZ Nvidia Geforce GTX 780 with 3 GB GDDR5. It was said to me that I only need 1 video card and having 2 video cards could cause issues is this true? Also…

Hey guys, does any one here by any chance is running the 4930k or the 4960k? do you know if it has a large overclocking (due to heat) headroom like the previous Sand Bridge-E "X series" CPU has? or it is very similar to the regular Ivy Bridge which had heat issues? and some went to the extreme and removing the CPU lid because of that. any Info will be helpful regarding the OC head room with the new Ivy Bridge-E CPU. thanks.

I currently run a Gateway FX 6860 destop with a intel I7 2600 CPU @ 3,4 GHZ and a H67 MOBO. I was looking to upgrade to a I7 3770k but tragically the H67 can't work with the I7 3770k. So I had to ask what MOBO is the CHEAPEST(I'm on a VERY tight budget) MOBO that I can run with the I7 3770k. Theres a repair shop near where I live and they don't sell parts but if I get the parts and take it to them they'll help me refit the computer with the new hardware. Please note that I would also like to install a Xigmatek Nighthawk 2 SD1283 cooler along with the new hardware. Regards, John

  15. Hope I'm posting in the correct forum for this question! I'm about to install a new 240GB SSD into my FSX PC on WIndows 7. I've taken the case apart and noticed that there only appear to be 4 SATA cables (the flat orange ones?) coming off the motherboard. 2 are attached to the OS SSD and main HD and 2 on the DVD drive and DVD/BluRay drive. I don't use the DVD/BluRay drive so can I just remove the SATA and power cable from that and use them for the new SSD drive? Thanks Adam

  16. Had this problem some time ago- tore my system apart - wound up doing a lot of cleaning and reapplying thermal paste. Problem disappeared. Now it's back. Anyone? See and hear it at YouTube (this is NOT my system, but it sounds pretty much like this) To HEAR this sound, click the "YouTube" icon in the lower-right of the player window. For some reason, I can't get the audio to play here on Avsim in the media viewer window. Thanks for any help. From what I know, this is a COMMON problem with newer PCs, not just those playing FSX. Note: nVidia GTX690 card w/onboard audio (HDMI) disabled. Onboard ASUS motherboard audio DISABLED in BIOS. Soundblaster X-Fi HiFi P…

Hello forum, I am leaning on moving to liquid cooling for my new rig, and I have read good reviews on the H110 by Corsair. Its radiator is a 280mmm, so I was wondering whether any case will do. I am going for a full tower, but I am trying to understand what case models would be compatible with the H110. Maybe some of you could give me a good suggestion. Any help will be much appreciated, Enrico

It's my wifes desktop pc to be honnest. She couldn't start the PC this morning. I checked and changed the cables, the power source, but everything was ok. The pilot lamp on the back of the psu was off. Deconnecting and reconnecting the cable made it come on again. When pushing the Pc's start button, the pilot lights did go off however. Repeating the process 30 minutes later started the PC without a problem. This behavior is perfectly repeatable. Now, I Have the PC running for several hours and once started, the power stays on. Could this be a faulty psu? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Jos

Does anyone have any suggestions from personal experience? I was thinking about a Surface, but after Froogle's video , I'm not so sure. Has anything changed since then? Thanks,
