I'm working my way through Paul Johnson's excellent guide to hardware and software for FSX. On P10 he suggests as more RAM is added to a computer, the need for a page file decreases. If you have enough RAM installed in your computer, you may not require a page file at all, unless one is required by a specific application. If I increased RAM from 8Gb to 16Gb would that negate the requirement? The reason I ask is because I'm getting a single SSD (512Gb) for both W7 and FSX and further on in that document he say's ...when the Paging File is used - it's disk is working it's head off, and you really don't want to be creating disk files when your memory and disk are…

Howdy! I'm currently thinking about upgrading my computer to where it will play FSX without lagging around the DFW/LAX/JFK area using payware aircraft, and put a fairly good amount of AI traffic but I just need some help of which motherboard and CPU and some extra stuff to pick out. I am helping a friend who lives in Brazil. Parts are very expensive there, so he is buying it in Paraguay. He will be using a monitor with a res of 1440 x 900, so I assume this will give him good performance. However, he is thinking about upgrading his monitor to a 1920x1080 res monitor. Here are the parts he wants to buy, please tell me if these will allow him to play FSX with add-ons and decent settings: i7-3770 EVGA GTX 680 2gb XFX 750W PSU Bronze 8GB 1600MHz Corsair Vengeance RAM GA-Z77-D3H motherboard Is this good enough for 1440x900, and perhaps 1920x1080 at high settings with add-ons, such as ORBX, PMDG and REX? Or should he upgrade to lets a i7-377…

Good morning everyone. Long time flight simmer have been out of the game for a few years and have never owned a gaming laptop. Have a desktop at home that runs FSX quite well. However, I spend 25+ weeks a year on the road for work and have much downtime in hotels etc, I'm looking into buying a laptop capable of running FSX. I've tried searching these fourms and googling such setups but most threads seem outdated so I'll ask here again. I'm looking for a laptop to run FSX using PMDG products with several addon's such as airports, weather, and terrrain, but not neccessarily traffic. With settings moderatley hight, how feasible would this be with a laptop? I know FSX is CP…

Hi How would 2400MHz CL11 compare with 2133 MHz CL10 and CL9 in FSX's performance on an i7-4770K OC to 4.5 or 4.6 GHz. I am considering a motherboard bundle with an i7-4770K OC to 4.6 GHz but the memory supplied is CL11 so I am thinking of changing it but 2400MHz at anything lower than CL11 doesn't seem to be readily available here yet. Thanks Phil

Hello I was thinking of building a new pc for fsx but did not want to spend to much money unnecessarily so here are the specs I came up with: Intel i5 4670k (going to overclock to around 4.5ghz if possible with cooler) Gtx 660 993mhz 2gb Asus p8z77-v LX S1155 intel z77 ddr3 atx CoolerMaster hyper 212 evo 4 heatpipe, tower CPU cooler Corsair 750w builder series cx750 psu Zalman z9 plus tower case with fan controller 8gb 1600mhz ram 1tb hdd So I have a few questions: 1. Is there any of these specs that could be lowered a bit to save me some money but not too much of a performance drop. 2. Will the cooler be enough to overclock the CPU to about 4.5ghz 3. W…

So after several months of no FSX (I said FSX!) I have reinstalled it on the 120gb SSD. The machine is W7 x64 with a GTX460 and 4GB ram. It is an i5 able to run at 4.6ghz. Tweaks-wise I run texture max loader and and external FPS limiter set at 30. By and large it seems very stable and an adequate performer. I am a layperson but interested nevertheless in seeing which hardware component will max out first. I know that FSX performance is largely a question of CPU speed but I was interested to see what was causing a drop in FPS to around 8. It was clearly to do with REX weather generating some angry looking clouds but when changing a view to one which doesn't involve lo…

The subject says it all...I'm thinking of upgrading my 2700K-based FSX-rig to the new Haswell architecture and my GTX 680 to a GTX 780 or even a Titan and was wondering if anyone who already did a similar upgrade can share their experiences. I have my 2700K clocked @ 4800GHz using a Corsair H100i cooler with good temps and I hope should I go for a 4770K to be able to still use my H100i and clock the new 4770K @ 4.5 GHz or possibly even higher wtih some luck. How big was the performance boost for anyone who already did a similar upgrade and was it worth it...? Thanks a lot in advance for any input!

I have created a benchmark that compares how different CPU architectures and cache sizes affects performance in FSX. These are the results: This benchmark is fully CPU limited as long as you have a fairly modern graphics card. That means that if you increase the CPU clockspeed by 25%, you’ll get a 25% higher result. So what do these 4 initial results tell us? It shows that Haswell offers a very healthy 11% IPC improvement over IvyBridge in FSX. Haswell is also 17% faster than SandyBridge-E and 25% faster than Lynnfield at the same clockspeed. You could also say that when it comes to FPS in FSX, Haswell @ 4.30GHz = IvyBridge @ 4.77GHz = SandyBridge-E @ 5.02GHz.…
