Hi, I am thinking about upgrading my current I7 930 build to the latest I7 hardware, either SB or IB. I tend to upgrade every 2 years, but the system I have now is about 3 and a half years old. It performs without any major issues, and FPS are pretty good. But I have been thinking that it may be a good idea to sell the parts on ebay while they still hold some value, and use the proceeds to help pay for all the new components a change in CPU will require, like a new Motherboard, RAM, CPU cooler, and possibly, a new GPU. And of course, I want to replace them before they age even further, fail and become worthless Anyhow, I have a fear that has held me back fro…

Hi all, you may have seen my other thread, and I'm definitely considering the purchase of a new computer. This is what I'm looking at. I do not want to build one so please DO NOT recommend that, I'm looking for information on using this build to run the PMDG 737NGX and Airbus X Extended throughout the world, I don't use add-on scenery by the way. http://www.dell.com/us/p/xps-8700/pd?oc=fdcwgt19b&model_id=xps-8700 XPS 8700 CPU: Core i7-4770 @ 3.9GHz (locked) GFX: AMD Radeon 7570 (can be upgraded to GT 645 - should I?) 8GB RAM @ 1600MHz If there is anything else you guys might recommend please post it here - I'm not sure if the system I'm consideri…

Okay this is really starting to annoy me now. If anyone had experienced this in the past, please tell me what you did to fix it. So basically this is what happens: I sit in my chair, and turn on my computer. After punching in my Windows password, I wait a few seconds for my desktop to load, along with all my other programs (Skype, Steam, anti virus, etc). Then, I open Google Chrome to start checking my emails and Facebook and what not. When I middle button click a link on Facebook (Middle button on the mouse opens a link in a new tab), my whole computer will freeze, except for the mouse. During this freeze, if I start clicking my mouse, the mouse will also freeze.…

Hi everyone, one of the saddest posts is coming. So last night, I bought one of my first scenery addons - GEX and UTX for the USA, I got the NGX a while back and planned to fly Southwest Airlines. Taking the suggestion from GEX themselves, I defragmented my hard drive after installing them. After defragment I planned out my first flight, and shut down my computer, so I could restart it and be able to have more RAM etc. Once I pressed the ON button - I was greeted with one of the most unpleasant surprises of my life. UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME I didn't know what this meant and took it as just a 1-time boot error. After 3 more re-boots, I realized this …

Hi guys, I've just taken off from VTBS, and as I sat here, I was looking around (moving house as I fly ) and saw my RPi sitting there... Since I already have another computer doing all my background program running (AS2012, EFB etc), so I thought I wonder if anyone has came up with a ingenious way to use RPi for their simming needs??? It does run raspbian, so compatibility is an issue. It is slow compared to modern day computers. But if they are so robust little machines, has anyone found a way to adapt it into their FSimming hobby?? I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on this Cheers,

Hello, I'm not a computer guy, I bought fsx as a study aid... And I would research more before asking a question but I'm heading up tomorrow (and will probably be fine without it) but it would be nice to practice procedures. I just bought a refurbished dell optiplex 745... For no other reason than it was installed with windows 7, and I assumed it would be up to date enough to run fsx but I get a 1630 fatal error message half way through the install. If some one could tell me if this pc will support fsx or if I'm SOL it would save me some fiddling around, thanks!

First and foremost I want to thank all the contributors to the forum, including to the recent threads I initiated, it's an awfully usefull reading . After some considerations, this is the way I intent to go, mostly high end but I hate changing my stuff every so often  . i7-4770K ASUS SABERTOOTH Z87 : I understand now that beyond a certain price level, all MB are good enough . I'll go Asus because I found some good sources of infos to set them up and o/c and the Sabertooth looks like mainstream. First of all, i am sorry to bring this topic again, but sadly after going through many internet articles and this forum as well, i still cannot find clear answer for my question. I want to upgrade my computer so i have to choose new components. My computer is to be done as machine made for FSX exclusively. I do not mind "Ivy Bridge", "Haswell" or any other family - finally differences are really minor as i read. As i have found, right I5 have same 4 cores as I7. I5 can run overclocked same speed as I7 ( 4.2-5 GHz is not a big problem ) L3 cache amount between I5 and I7 is different by 2MB if that matters ... So my question is : do i really need to buy I7 t…

Hi there, so after 30 some years of using PC's I finally had the guts to overclock, well kinda - since I haven't kept up with how to do it manually I used gigabyte's touch bios and did an "automatic" quickboost from 3.3 to 4.4 and the results are remarkable. I was just wondering what advice on free temp monitoring tools you guys have, and what temps can be considered normal with this kind of modest oc. I'm running a gigabyte z68x-ud4-b3 with an i5-2500K (stock 3.3 ghz)? I just did a short testflight in the PMDG T7 from FSDT's KJFK (30 minutes only though) and it never dipped below 30 FPS with about 25% traffic and my cpu temps were in the mid/high 50's C (I us…

Hi All, Just got the parts in for my new Mini ITX Maximus VI Impact based home infotainment rig. This will allow me to move back into my home office as my main SB-E rig is now mainly an iRacing platform. It is also upstairs and far away from my home office which means that at night the wife and I are literally a house apart (we do lots of work on our PCs). My Obutto R3volution racing rig is not an ideal setup for FSX (pain to switch wheel for yoke) so I am going back to a desk for FSX. I have certainly not enjoyed having to take apart my racing rig to convert it to FSX and even when I do the 3 27" monitors just make it feel weird (stretching in peripheral vision).…

http://www.hardocp.com/article/2013/08/30/intel_ivy_bridgee_core_i74960x_ipc_ocing_review/ As for overclocking, they got it to 4.6 GHz. In spite of it using solder instead of TIM like Ivy Bridge and Haswell, they were unable to stabilize the system at 4.7 GHz. For most users, it looks like a 4770K @ 4.4 - 4.6 GHz would provide better performance. The main advantage with IB-E would be more PCI-E lanes (triple-SLI) and up to 6 cores/12 threads with the more expensive CPUs.

Captains, I have been having recurring and totally random issues with an APPHANGB1 error in FSX. This error was happening with any plane, any scenery and at totally random times. I tried to repeat the situation and get the exact same error or more than one occasion, but I couldn't replicate it. So I went on a system troubleshooting hunt: Firstly, I thought it may have been my overclock. I bumped up the Vcore offset a few notches but couldn't cure the problem Next I lowered the overclock on my graphics card. This seemed to work at first, but after a while the error came back again I lowered the settings on Nvidia inspector. Again this seemed as though it was a fix,…

Earlier this year I purchased a 110GB SSD, and foolishly partitioned it into what now shows on my PC as C: and D:. ( I have older HDD’s as well, E:. F:, etc…. plus a DVD drive). I installed Windows 8 onto C:, and FSX onto D: (both on the same physical SSD). Not surprisingly, D: is becoming full, and I have resorted to placing some scenery items onto E: (older HDD). I did post some time ago here about “undoing” the partitioning without destroying C:, and re-installing FSX onto another drive, which I may still do. I am now getting a 500GB SSD (thanks to those who added recommendations here recently). I could uninstall FSX from D: and just re-install it onto the …

so I am slowly finishing my haswell watercooled build, this week I will get 1 Samsung evo 250 GB, and a 750 GB. This will be my first use of SSD's. What would be the ideal setup. I believe not in raid? But what about this rapid storage? I can use that on 1 ssd, will there be a benefit. for now I am looking at; 250 GB ssd, OS + fsx programs 750 GB FSX + planes and scenery maybe someone has a similar setup or some pointers what to do?

Hello, I will soon be going to University (physics, of course ) and will be getting a laptop. It will mostly be used for work however I would also like it to be able to run games, including FSX (although I realise it is a very demanding program, esspecially with addons). The budget is £400. Thanks,

Maybe getting old  but this time around I find picking up a motherboard rather confusing. There are a lot of reviews, good reviews, but at the end of the day, too technical in nature rather than utilitarian for the average Joe (me). Difficult to sort out an Asus Extreme and Sabertooth. Same in the Gigabyte or MSI lines of products ! I'm looking for a Z87 for a 4770k : - easy to o/c, I will target the 4.3/4.5 range, not interested to test the chip limits. More interested by a well defined tutorial and procedural path. - easy to install a quiet cooling equipment (I'd rather have liquid, never had one and want to try) - a very good sound chip to which …

Hi guys, Since building my new system based on the i7 3770k, I still cannot get much change out of my FSX installation. I'm still running my old graphics card (GTS450) and was wondering if that might be a bottleneck. Is it worth upgrading the GPU? Some people say that upgrading to something like a GTX770 will make a real difference but others say that the CPU does most of the work and a new graphics card would be a waste of money. I'd really appreciates some advice here. Many thanks Foto

Dear all. I currently have a i5 2500k at 4.5ghz using 1.3 volts ( I have been up to 1.425 but I can't get it stable above 4.5ghz) so I was looking to upgrade but my budget will only get me iether a i7 3770k or a new motherboard and a i5 4670k, I would have to keep my pc1600 memory for now. I am using a H110i for cooling and my think about De-lidding the cpu but which would give me the best overclock. Mark.

I'm planning the components for a new FSX PC and will be installing Win7 on a SSD. But I'm unsure if I need a SSD or HDD for FSX, scenery and addons. I'm thinking of a Samsung 840 Pro 256Gb SSD for the OS and other programs but what should I install FSX on? My supplier - www.scan.co.uk - is offering a 1TB Seagate Barracuda 7200 SATA 6Gb/s 7200rpm 64mb Cache 8ms HDD. I know fps is unaffected but would I really notice any difference should I choose the HDD over a SSD for FSX?

I have a Corsair H100i as my water cooler on my 3930k and it works great.. but for one thing. I have to wait about 8 minutes after boot up for the pump RPM to hit 2200RPM. It sits at 500RPM while I wait. And with this aggressive overclock, I can't do anything at all until the fan kicks on. I have done searches on Corsair's forums but can't seem to find this exact problem. Everyone is complaining about the Corsair LINK software not letting them control the fan speed but I dont need fan crontrol. I need fan to spin fast right off the bat. This fan speed loss happens while sitting in the BIOS menu as well. After about 8 minutes though the cooler makes a sound…

Hi all, Looking to increase performance here. As an example, at FSDT's KJFK V.2, I'm getting FPS in the mid teens with PMDG 737. Just using FSrealwx weather, no additional add on scenery and minimal traffic. I certainly need an updated graphics card as I currently run an AMD 6800 series ( 1GB). My CPU is an I7-870 ( 2.9 GHZ, quad). I have 8GB RAM and an 850W power supply. OS is Windows 7 64 bit. A few questions here: 1) With an updated Graphics card (ex. Nvidia GTX 760) , is the I7 870 still a viable CPU, or should I get a more powerful, updated one. My goal would be to see the PDMG 737 get somewhere in the mid , perhaps high 20's FPS at FSDT airports. I don't mi…
