I am not against building my own CPU, never done it before but when I price up the components compared to the price cyberpower would do it for doesnt make much sense for me to screw something up and just let them build it! Any thoughts on the below PC for FSX and possibily P3D in the future. I fly mostly all airliners (Aerosoft, PMDG) to large citys with addon software. I have just noticed that my entire P3D setup is less than 70gb and on that basis I realise I can quite easily afford an SSD drive to put it on. If I create a clone of my HDD using the SSD (and ensuring the SSD has the same drive letter), can I simply drop the new SSD in such that my P3D and all of the addons will not be affected. I really don't want to go down the route of reinstalling everything again. Thanks Tom

I'm finally upgrading from a tired old E8600 dual core 3.3GHz and ATI Radeon 4800 video card to the following: Intel Core i7-4790K OC 4.4 GHz (Turbo) ASUS Maximus VII Hero Z97 MSI GTX 970 OC Corsair Vengeance Pro 16GB DDR3 2400MHZ FirePower Fatal1ty 750W Power Supple Cooler Master V8 GTS-High Performance CPU Cooler Cooler Master HAF X Full Tower Case. My question is I'm pulling my hard drive out of the old box which just has my OS on it (Win 7 pro), and my SSD which currently just has my FSX on it and popping it into the new box. Other than having to do the Microsoft OS thing with a new motherboard is there anything else that might surprise me, other than the incr…

  4. I'm close to placing an order for my new PC with a i7-4770K processor. Last night I received an email from my supplier announcing three new processors - the i7-4820K, i7-4930K and the very expensive i7-4960X. The 4960X is too expensive but comparing the 4820K and 4930K to the 4770K looks interesting. The clock speed on the 4820K is 3.7Ghz compared to 3.5 on the 4770K and it has an extra 2Mb of cache. The i7-4930K is clocked at only 3.4 but has more cores and threads. And the new processors support quad DDR3 up to 1866MHz compared to Dual 1600 with the 4770K. The full comparison is here. http://ark.intel.com/compare/77780,77781,75123 Should I go for the 4820K o…

I currently run FSX with an i7 4770k @ 3.5 (H100i water cooled) - MSI Z87-GD65 - MSI GTX 780ti 3GB Factory OC - 16GB Corsair Vengeance 2133 - 250 SSD - Corsair 760 PSU. With everything maxed out I get poor frames (expected) but shouldn't the CPU / GPU be in boost / turbo mode or something along those lines? Are there any apps available that automatically overclock the CPU? The rig is completely silent when I would have thought at least an increase in fan speed would occur?

  6. We talk a lot about what equipment we fly with, so perhaps it is a good idea to have a thread for sharing pictures of our flight simulation computers and/or cockpit layout and equipment. Of course what each of us have is a moving target since we tend to occasionally upgrade and change computers or components, so maybe posting updates from time to time would also be helpful. I hope you think this thread is a good idea too. Kind regards,

As Christmas nears I'm looking at potentially indulging myself and investing in a new rig. Below are the specifications for my current computer, which while adequate to run FS2004 with REX, ASE, and other various sceneries and addons, obviously isn't ideal for more intensive simulators, i.e., FSX, XPlane, P3D. And while it is sufficient, it is being pushed rather hard. Processor: 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7 Memory: 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 Graphics: Nvidia GT 650M The question(s) is/are somewhat twofold. First of all, if I was to invest in a new machine I'd (ideally) like to build it myself, as opposed to buying a pre-made rig. A bit more effort and labor involved, …

I am speccing a new computer for use with FS9. I have a lot of addon mesh/terrain/scenery/AI/ and aircraft. My present set up uses about 100 GB of disc space. I am probably going for an intel i7 4790 processor. My question is will a SSD make a difference to in-game performance ? I understand it will improve initial loading times of the sim (at present takes about 3 minutes), but in-game performance is what I am really interested in. Any thoughts ?

Could someone please let me know, how is the difference between 4690k and i7, lets say 4790k? I have a 4690k, a rather good CPU, what performance bump is expected in prepar3d with an i7? Guess that AMD is out of the game in this range, why are they lagging so behind recently?

I'm wondering if I'm being overly cautious. I have a i7-3930K overclocked typically to ~4.32Ghz at 1.29v to the core. Sometimes I will increase freq to ~4.56Ghz at 1.335v if it's a demanding flight plan performance wise. What have you found seems pretty safe? I do have it configured to throttle down w/ low demand. Since IB-E will fit in my mobo it would be ok if my SB-E lasted only 2-3 years. Thanks in advance

Hi everyone, I was just wondering which computer would be the best value for playing FSX: ASUS M51 Desktop: $699 including Assassins Creed (could sell it for $20 maybe) 3.3 GHz AMD FX-8300 8GB RAM 2GB NVIDIA GTX650 1TB HDD or HP Envy 700 Desktop: $799 3.4 GHz i7-4770 8 GB PC3-12800 (1600 MHz DDR3); 4 GB PC3-12800 (1600 MHz DDR3) 2 TB HDD 2 GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 635 Would it be justifiable for an extra $100 for the HP Envy? I don't game at all, just need a computer that can run FSX smoothly with decent graphics. If the AMD FX-8300 is good enough to run it with decent graphics, I would probably just buy the ASUS and save $100. You're …

  18. Hello all, I have seen a few reviews from people with AMD chips going to the new devils canyon, but how about sandy bridge. I have a 2600k that runs fine at 4.8Ghz and I have played FSX with it as high as 5.1Ghz and definitely notice a smoother running sim and hotter LOL. Is it worth going from a 2600k @ 4.8 to a 4790k assuming I can run it @ 4.6- 4.8? I will be reusing my 2133 ram and have a GTX970 on its way already. Anyone with a similar setup care to give some feedback. Thanks.

  22. Folks, this computer hardware stuff is not my strong point and probably there's just some sort of omission on my end: Got myself an external Western Digital MyBook USB 3.0 HDD drive, plugged it into some USB port on my desktop PC and started installing it, configuring and backing up data (cloning the internal drive to be precise). This has worked out well, no issues so far. Just yesterday I noticed that the USB drive was plugged into a 2.0 USB port, instead of the faster 3.0 type. Thought I could just plug the drive into a different port - to my surprise this didn't work. The drive is only recognized when plugged into exactly the same port I started this back…

Guys, I really need help. My SSD is running out of space. I cant even install my P3D on a separate hard disk as my C drive is running low on space. Although my FSX is on a separate disk( M drive) and I have a separate disk for games (H Drive), my main storage is running low. Any help on what I can delete, uninstall in order to gain more space and install my P3d. I understand that even though you I have multiple HDD, some files will be copied into my C drive. Would appreciate any help and advise on this please. Regards

An idea I've been playing with is throwing fsx on an ssd external drive. By this I mean an internal ssd inside of an external case. Hoping to acheive faster load times and hence smoother play. Looking for anyone who actually runs this setup, if there is anyone. #1- will this even work? #2- will this bypass those stupid "administrator rights" pop ups. In other words can I just click run and go with things like REX or will I still have to deal with annoying passwords to function lol? #3-what setups work and what doesn't? #4-with this setup, could you use it on multiple computers (not at the same time) or will fsx not work because of registration key issues?
