September, 2002

This forum and all others related to the FLY series of flight simulator, are dedicated to the memory of Richard Harvey - the lead designer for Terminal Reality's Fly.

At the AVSIM FANCON of 2002, Richard and his wife, Tara, attended. Richard was presented with AVSIM's Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the flight simulation genre and his outstanding service and support of the FS community. Richard was a friend to many of us, and never hesitated to assist and inspire. Richard passed away the following March, 2003. He is sorely missed by his friends and those that were privileged to know him.

Richard in his last post to the forums said; "Try to stay away from things that are dark, dreary, introspective, tear jerkers, etc. Think HAPPY -- be HAPPY. If that is too much to ask, then I'll change the word HAPPY to POSITIVE. That's the flow of feeling I want rolling through my soul as I depart this earth from each of you, is absolute POSITIVE energy. Don't stall on me, I have to soar!"

Richard also passed this along to us in his last post; "******* Christ is my Lord and Savior. As my loving God and Lord has protected and guided me throughout my life, I pray he will do likewise for you and your family. May each of you achieve your dreams, and not be troubled by hardships. I pray for your good health. God will only give you as much load as you can bear, and never any more. Do not lose hope, nor certainly faith. Above all, do not fear evil, for though it surrounds us it can never hurt us. It may claim hollow victories, but it always suffers defeat."

We are proud to carry on Richard's undaunted support for his passion and his unstinting support of the user. Welcome to the Richard Harvey Memorial Fly Forums!

Hi Flyers,My post it's like a broken record, but have to ask again: is it any guy working on an elevation tool for Fly! II? Rich told me once that he had almost finish with editor, but unfortunately his sick got worse and the rest you all know. :'( I know that we can use Flattenator to generate some elevations, but it's impossible to see them in realtime (like old Editor 1.05 for Fly!) and very hard to do it since I also got some software crashed when tried. Thanks in advance,Keyton Cabral

I don't know if any of you noticed this, but last year Airnav, a fantastic online source of U.S. navigation and airport data, removed all of the detailed info on ILS, Localizer and related data. It was still a good source of information, especially on runways, com frequencies, etc., but I was really disappointed in the loss of localizer data, as it's been a godsend for exact placement and editing of Fly! approach systems.I wrote them a few weeks ago, asking if the data was going to be posted again or whether they could point us to a good alternative source. Well, happy day - they notified me that "due to popular demand" they're bringing it back! :-yellow1 So folks - if …

I`m making one quarter tile, 3-181NW. When I import GTOPO30 elevation data, I get these jagged lines on the border. I am using a tile density of 4x4, and Subdivide Tolerance=200. No matter what different values I try, I can`t get rid of those jaggies. Has it something to do with overlapping the tga and/or elevation data?Hope there is a solution to this...if not, I have to give up on the elevation data x(

G'day all,After 2 years searching I have finally found an acceptable satellite image of Sydney.I have tried to get to the "enhanced terrascene tutorial" but keep getting the "this page cannot be displayed" error message. I've installled terrascene and taken a brief walk through the program but the satellite image is a 9.5 MB compressed JPG file and not any of the formats listed.(ie dem, usgs, dgl etc). At least they don't say it is. It's a NASA image, the scale is not stated. The only reference point mentioned is that the centre of the image is 34.0S/151.0E. and that it is 5000 x 5000 pixels. My question is "can this image be used with terrascene to create scenery for Fly! …

If I can just get ONE working example of entering text, clicking a button (with the *.win) to close the file, I know I can take it from there.Jeff

Hello,I have been successfully running Terrascene2.1 on my MacOSX 10.2.3 with the latest drop of the Java 1.4.1 VM provided by Apple. I still need to go back to a PC to use flyslice.exe to complete the process, though. But comparing with a PC output I noticed that the roads and coast/lake shore lines are not rendered when using the same parameters.1) this may well be a bug in Apple's 1.4.1 implementation. Without the source code for Terrascene, it will be hard for Apple to find where the problem is, as the program does not raise exceptions during processing. It is very stable, and spends a lot of time rendering the different road/railroad levels, but none come out in the f…

Can anyone assist me with adding States to Countries in FlyII. The changes to the Flight Planner in patch 240 has options for selecting countries and their associated states, however only US states exist currently. I would like to add Australian states. From my investigations this information exists in the GEOGRAPH.POD but VolEdit will not open the .DBD files in this pod. I read somewhere that VolEdit only opens certain pod files. Is this the reason that the pod data can't be edited, and if so, is there a way of doing so using some other tool? :-hmmmKen Brand.Perth, Western AustraliaFlying out of YPJT.

Hi,I'd like to find a solution for trace debugging between VisualC++ and Fly!II :When the code execution stop on a defined breakpoint, then the Fly!II screen freeze and I can't switch back to the Visual screen. So I have to kill Visual or stop the execution with keyboard shortcuts !Does someone have a solution for this, without using a remote computer of course :-))Thanks

You may already know this, but the dead link is preventing the downloading of those sample files in order to do some experimenting with maps, especially when it comes to the *.map file. Any chance that you could upload those files in a zip to AVsim? thanks.tony

Hi all,Is there a way to read control inputs (cyclic/collective/...) through FSUIPC or MS SDK? I'm actually interested in the collective/cyclic input value rather than in say, the pitch, which is a function of the cyclic/collective/pedals/... input. Thanks

Help!!!I believe the autopilot has the channels hard-coded and it expects the aileron, elevator, rudder and its respective trims. Is there any way around this? Could I modify the .MIX file with the helicopter channels? At this point I've successfully connected the A/P in the Bell's panels now the problem is to make it work. If in the .FCS file I assigne the helicopter channels (xCyt, zCyt and tRtt) I get a "AP not registered" error and then CTD. If I leave the aircraft channels, then I can see in the errorlog that the K150 can't get a reply from the airplane channels.I'm stuck with this.Alejandro AmigorenaCheshire, CTFly! Hi!Has anyone tried to tweak the autopilot &/or flight director in Fly2! to make them "softer" and smarter? The FD allways commands huge bank, and one should simply not follow it's indications or risk killing the passengers or destroying the airplane... Now, a FD is supposed to be followed....Can the SDK be used to access internal variables directly related with these instruments : AP & FD ?Thx in advance for any answers!!!

Just wanted to know if anyone in Fly II's world has ever attempted to increase the funtionality of the Peregrine's Universal FMS. If so, is there a file I could download to use more of its features? If not then would it be possible to accomplish the task of programming additional functionality. I don't have a clue about simulation programming but have used the Universal extensively on a number of aircraft I fly, and it would be delightful to see much of it functional in Fly II. Maybe one of you wizards can help by walking me through the process of bringing more, if not all of its features to life, so we can all get a little more out of this wonderful simulation. Thanks fo…

Fly!2 is in awesome simulator. I think we'll all agree. But two features of the earlier revisions (Fly! and Fly!2k) were functioning weather radar and icing. I have no appreciation for what it would take to implement icing, but my very (and I mean really very) limited programming skills would lead me to believe the weather radar shouldn't be that difficult at all. We already have the capabilities to "know" what the cloud density and height are, and even if one cannot make a fully accurate weather radar system, one should be able to at least simulate radar by writing some algorithms to recognize cloud type and height in order to draw green, yellow and red dots on the insta…
