This forum and all others related to the FLY series of flight simulator, are dedicated to the memory of Richard Harvey - the lead designer for Terminal Reality's Fly.

 

At the AVSIM FANCON of 2002, Richard and his wife, Tara, attended. Richard was presented with AVSIM's Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the flight simulation genre and his outstanding service and support of the FS community. Richard was a friend to many of us, and never hesitated to assist and inspire. Richard passed away the following March, 2003. He is sorely missed by his friends and those that were privileged to know him.

 

Richard in his last post to the forums said; "Try to stay away from things that are dark, dreary, introspective, tear jerkers, etc. Think HAPPY -- be HAPPY. If that is too much to ask, then I'll change the word HAPPY to POSITIVE. That's the flow of feeling I want rolling through my soul as I depart this earth from each of you, is absolute POSITIVE energy. Don't stall on me, I have to soar!"

 

Richard also passed this along to us in his last post; "******* Christ is my Lord and Savior. As my loving God and Lord has protected and guided me throughout my life, I pray he will do likewise for you and your family. May each of you achieve your dreams, and not be troubled by hardships. I pray for your good health. God will only give you as much load as you can bear, and never any more. Do not lose hope, nor certainly faith. Above all, do not fear evil, for though it surrounds us it can never hurt us. It may claim hollow victories, but it always suffers defeat."

    If I get the FlySlice Not responding to respond again, what must I do to get the audio and visual effects. Water texture looks right bur no splash sound or visual splash on contact with water only DUST....Richard;

  2. Hi All,Well, I have dropped my hat into the ring, read the tutorials and threads on TS 2.1First off, Todd .... Thank You.. Your program is absolutely incredible.I rarely do things small, so I am rendering a 50 mile radius from JOT. Since this encompasses all of Chicago, should I remove Ken's Chicago and west scenery pods prior to starting Fly!II after the render is complete. I also understand to remove the not needed data files as well. It has been rendering since last night at 8:30pm or so.     1. What must one do to get the water effects, I have all my mask files, the water looks right, but no splash, visual or audio.2.     Hello. I was looking at the Fly forum downloads and tried to download a c-130 hercules for Fly2K. While it does show up as an aircraft able to be selected, it won't work and give me an error code.I am not a computer genius, but does anyone know how to get past this? Thanks for you time and help.

    Hello,I have a couple of graphics related problems:1. Inspired by the TBM700 ... I was experimenting with thepilatus ... wanting a tighter cockpit feel ... I modified thePIL_MAIN.PBM file and added a center post ... but now I get the following ...I suspect this has to do with the associated PIL_MAIN.actand PIL_MAIN.AAI files ... what are they ?2.     I'm wanting to get into FLY!II aircraft and panel development. It appears to me that most of the good ones we see are done using Photoshop and 3D studio. The cost of these programs are outragous, geared toward commercial use.Photoshop 7.0 =$605 retail3D studio = $3,300 retailI might be able to get photoshop (educational version) for $200. Not sure if 3D studio has an educational version out there.Would anybody make any suggestions on obtaining such software or an alternative? I have looked at ebay, yet auctioning can get expensive too. Is there anybody or anyplace that sells older (several years old) versions of such software or any other software alternatives?Any advice …

    Well, I just ran Terrascene 2.1 for the first time. Easy as pie, though this is actually my second time since the first time I tried a 50 mile radius and ran out of space!Anyway, I did 10 mile radius around my home airport. Looks like it worked flawlessly - and the "10 mile VAY" data, as I named it, appeared in the Fly! II scenery directory.However, I saw no noticeable difference, except there was a beacon next to (actually, on) the runway, which is no longer there, and though I sure seemed to be on the runway, the vector map showed me a mile or two off.Upon flying around, I saw no new terrain features.Any thoughts?Andrew

    I am trying to create a new airport in my area. The runway is 5000 feet long. I can't seem to get Flattenator to work. One end of the runway is like 217 feet high and the other is like 220 feet high. I'm guessing this is why only half of the runway shows up. I have created taxi ways, they seem to be placed OK. When I attempt to level the difference with Flattenator, nothing changes. I have tried the advance view and just the overide view. No luck. Anyone have any ideas.This is my first attempt at changing or adding anything in fly. Hopefully I can figure this stuff out. THanks for any help.Dajackman

    I'm trying to render Finnish scenery by using TS2. The only data available for that area that I'm creating is from ESRI and unfortunately it is not accurate enough. There are missing towns and villages and some roads are wrong. So the output of TS2 is not satisfactory.On the other hand I have a scanned map (scale 1:20000, resolution 10m/pixel). This map is pretty accurate, containing needed towns, roads and land cover usage (forest, fields, population etc).Is there PC Program to create all needed shp, shx and dbf files out of scanned map? Or is there some other ways to use this map in rendering?

    I am trying to extract a .pod file using the file manager. However, the dialog window does not accurately represent the current directory as it is stated at the top of the window. It simply lists the directories that it expects to be in the Fly! II folder, no matter what the current directory contains. I tried running Fly! II in both Mac OS 9.2 and Mac OS X, with similar results.

    Hi again Ken - Something I've always wanted in a sim are good lights on the ground at night.My question is this: is it possible to use Scengen to place "point lights" - that is, single points (in 3d) which are bright enough to look like actual lights on the ground?Or, for that matter, do you know if there is a way to assign a brightness level to points in a ground texture which would be much brighter than what we have now?Andrew

    Firstly, I wanted to say a big THANKS to the moderators of this board, Ken Salter and Todd Klaus - for an amazing job. It is awesome to see people who really know what the **** they are doing, who can be bothered picking up threads from neophytes like myself (who can't seem to follow simple instructions!!) and putting them together. If you want to see what I mean, check my previous posts (complaining about PODView and TS2...) and the succint and informative and speedy replies I got from Ken and Todd. Also thanks to user RandellR, for helping me out on that last one.I just love happy endings.

    Hello I use the CAM and PIT files from the Hawker because it has a few morecameras than I need for the cockpit.The rest is used for passenger views.But I need more than 4 views.I want to take a full 360 circlelike the cockpit.But adding extra cameras in the CAM file by cuttingand pasting do not work.I also defined them in the PIT file.Any suggestion? I need at least 20 cameras total.ThanksJan
