This forum and all others related to the FLY series of flight simulator, are dedicated to the memory of Richard Harvey - the lead designer for Terminal Reality's Fly.
At the AVSIM FANCON of 2002, Richard and his wife, Tara, attended. Richard was presented with AVSIM's Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the flight simulation genre and his outstanding service and support of the FS community. Richard was a friend to many of us, and never hesitated to assist and inspire. Richard passed away the following March, 2003. He is sorely missed by his friends and those that were privileged to know him.
Richard in his last post to the forums said; "Try to stay away from things that are dark, dreary, introspective, tear jerkers, etc. Think HAPPY -- be HAPPY. If that is too much to ask, then I'll change the word HAPPY to POSITIVE. That's the flow of feeling I want rolling through my soul as I depart this earth from each of you, is absolute POSITIVE energy. Don't stall on me, I have to soar!"
Richard also passed this along to us in his last post; "******* Christ is my Lord and Savior. As my loving God and Lord has protected and guided me throughout my life, I pray he will do likewise for you and your family. May each of you achieve your dreams, and not be troubled by hardships. I pray for your good health. God will only give you as much load as you can bear, and never any more. Do not lose hope, nor certainly faith. Above all, do not fear evil, for though it surrounds us it can never hurt us. It may claim hollow victories, but it always suffers defeat."
We are proud to carry on Richard's undaunted support for his passion and his unstinting support of the user. Welcome to the Richard Harvey Memorial Fly Forums! |

I'm currently working on a ProController sector file for EGNS. For anyone not familiar with the file format for this program, most of the file consists of Lat/Long coordinate pairs that form line segments. A sample section is reproduced here:;Island adj hold D4N054.04.43.576 W004.37.49.354 N054.04.43.230 W004.37.49.102 BlueN054.04.43.230 W004.37.49.102 N054.04.41.995 W004.37.45.005 BlueN054.04.41.995 W004.37.45.005 N054.04.41.873 W004.37.44.339 BlueN054.04.41.873 W004.37.44.339 N054.04.41.815 W004.37.43.813 BlueThis will draw 3 lines between the 4 points, all in blue.Producing this manually is a complete non-starter so what I need is the ability to drive an aircraft aroun…

I have a quick question about flattening Terrascene generated scenery w/ the Flattenator. I'm assuming I can use the trn files that Terrascene generates as input for Flattenator. My problem is that each time I try and retrieve the global and ground tiles, Flattenator throws a runtime exception and crashes. Anyone else had that experience? I've tried it in Windows 2000 and XP, but no luck on either.I'd love any ideas you guys have, because I don't want to give up on my project! The airport I've added appears properly, but Terrascene has created a ramp up to the airport, when in reality, the airport is supposed to slope down from 925 ft to 878 ft. I'm hoping that flat…

Hi folks. I've posted a message here before about my project to add my family's private strip to Fly! II. I'm still not getting it right, so I thought I'd try one more time with a few focused questions. The area is in Southern California near San Diego and is called Pauma Valley. I'll post some pictures here to show you what I'm going for.1) Here is a picture of the valley from above. The private strip should go almost directly below the airplane.http://home.earthlink.net/~finsdad/FlyII/p...vrproject_A.jpg2) In my first attempt, I created the terrascene before adding the runway using Voledit/Deximport. The result looked ok, but the aircraft sinks into the ground:htt…

Hi everybody again, I'm creating photorealistic scenery for Fly! (not Fly! II). Last week using the replies I got at this forum I managed to overcome the problem of converting UTM coordinates to the appropriate format. Using Orthophotos, Larry Jones's great utilities and Photoshop I managed to create a huge image of 1 meter/pixel resolution. Then using Fly!editor's 1.05 option of creating general "Dem/Satelliteimage scenery" I converted that image to Fly! scenery. The results were not satisfactory though, as the image was at 1m/pixel while the scenery generated was at fly!'s default resolution(15m/pixel). So I thought to use detailed 4x4 tiles to make fly!'s resolution ma…

I am searching for professional aircraft designers and/or companies that may be interested in working under contract with a major organization to develop extremely detailed aircraft add-ons for commercial software such as MSFS, FLY II, or X-Plane. These add-ons would be for existing complex fixed and rotary wing aircraft. They are to be used as procedural cockpit and scenario trainers for professional pilots. If you are or know of any people or companies that may be able to assist me, please reply or e-mail me at [email protected] and I will go into more details. Thanks for your time.

We made a generic dll to animate aircrafts parts (like canopy) using keyboard keys, and I tried to use API get and set 'part' position or orientation sdk functions...without succes. The only functions I could use were API 'set frame' and 'show' and 'hide' parts.Actually, the dll can work with 3dstudiomax prepared frames, but it would be great to move inanimated parts too.Has someone resolved this point ?We started some tests with the dll and we will send it to the fly community soon.Laurent (ROTW member)

I have lots of PODs created by others in my "scenery/shared" folder. Examples include all of Scott's NYC-area PODs (JFK, LGA, NYC, NY1, NY2, LI1), Philly, several European airport PODs, Golden Gate Bridge, etc. Except for a few relevant PODs (eg; BiberAll, Cities, etc.), most PODs are really not "shared", but are specific to an area.I learned from Allen Kreisman that these PODs are loaded in memory at all times, regardless of aircraft location. They take up quite a bit of RAM and appear to be slowing down my system.I'd like to learn how to unpod them, and then re-create PODs and SCFs of smaller areas (eg, one POD per airport) so that each individual new POD only loads whe…

About 10 days ago there was a post by Jak Fearon at the HITW site about this. Sounds like there is hope that a new/refined texture pack at some point relatively soon, and for a small fee, will be made available. From an earlier post last April at HITW the textures look just great. I for one will keep my fingers crossed (hopefully not for too much longer -- I might not be able to get them back apart). (-:Don

I'd like to do some repaints of some of the default planes in FlyII along with some additional aircraft like the TBM700. Do I have to get special permission from TRI or ROTW to release my repaints to others on AVSIM?Thanks...Dan

Randall, Back again. Heres something you said from another post. "BTW - Now that you're getting the feel of the built-in editor, you might want to set these scenery files aside in a safe place (just move the data folder to a backup area) and try to set up the same airport with Terramodels. I'm looking forward to working with Allen's great program later this summer - from everything I've seen Allen has put together a fantastic scenery creation tool that allows you to build your airports/cities with less polygons than Fly's own models."Ok I want to make sure that I dont loose anything before I try this. What scenery folders do I need to save? Are they the ones in the Fly…

I'm trying to add a private strip on my family's ranch. I've followed many posts in here and read tutorials, but still I'm left w/ a few questions. Here are the steps I've taken so far:1) In VolEdit, load the airports.pod and added my airstrip's info as a new line entry2) Export the new line as a dex file3) Open runways.pod in voledit and add an entry for the airstrip4) Run DexImport 1.2 and first import the DEX file for the airport5) Now import the DEX file for the runwayHere is what I'm getting:1) The runway appears more or less ok, but when I teleport there, the airplane is about 1000 feet off the ground and falling fast!2) I'm certain that I've entered the correct e…

Hi All,The lastest build (final, I hope) of TerraShape is on my hangar site now.TerraShape is a utility for translating Shapefiles into DXF files and vv. This enables easy editing capabilities. TerraShape is designed to work with TerraScene for those of us who live outside the US and only have the DCW data to work with.Anything is possible from adding missing roads etc. to editing coastlines, it depends upon your patience :-)TerraShape will NOT correct the runways-in-the-water or airplane-sinking problems, because thay are not scenery related as such. The coastlibes that you can edit are for visual effect only. For US designers, TerraShape will allow you to import a shapef…
