September, 2002

This forum and all others related to the FLY series of flight simulator, are dedicated to the memory of Richard Harvey - the lead designer for Terminal Reality's Fly.

At the AVSIM FANCON of 2002, Richard and his wife, Tara, attended. Richard was presented with AVSIM's Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the flight simulation genre and his outstanding service and support of the FS community. Richard was a friend to many of us, and never hesitated to assist and inspire. Richard passed away the following March, 2003. He is sorely missed by his friends and those that were privileged to know him.

Richard in his last post to the forums said; "Try to stay away from things that are dark, dreary, introspective, tear jerkers, etc. Think HAPPY -- be HAPPY. If that is too much to ask, then I'll change the word HAPPY to POSITIVE. That's the flow of feeling I want rolling through my soul as I depart this earth from each of you, is absolute POSITIVE energy. Don't stall on me, I have to soar!"

Richard also passed this along to us in his last post; "******* Christ is my Lord and Savior. As my loving God and Lord has protected and guided me throughout my life, I pray he will do likewise for you and your family. May each of you achieve your dreams, and not be troubled by hardships. I pray for your good health. God will only give you as much load as you can bear, and never any more. Do not lose hope, nor certainly faith. Above all, do not fear evil, for though it surrounds us it can never hurt us. It may claim hollow victories, but it always suffers defeat."

We are proud to carry on Richard's undaunted support for his passion and his unstinting support of the user. Welcome to the Richard Harvey Memorial Fly Forums!

    Hi everybody,FlyNetNavaid : I sent to avsim library today (and to our simvol library too) a package called FlyNetNavaid that contains some (I hope) interesting stuff...The main purpose of the stuff is to offer to every newcomers MFC developpers like me the opportunity to play with some TRI open databases (thanks to TRI for that !).You'll found an exe for a client PC and a dll for a fly! server PC : the main window will show the position of the user aircraft through the navaids and ils and the trace of this flight.Basically the application can be used to follow the route of you flight, but with some very easily changes you can develop a better application for any feature y…

    I admit it - I'm addicted to TerraScene. However, to make my flight experience a bit more enjoyable near coastlines and borders with Canada/Mexico, I need to edit the TGA files to remove the base textures that get drawn where no DEM data exists.Can someone recommend a reasonbly priced program that can both edit TGA's and convert TGA's to/from JPG (so that I can import the TerraScene packs of other countries posted here on AVSIM)?I know JASC's PaintShopPro is right-on, but that's a $90 package. I wasn't thinking of spending quite that much.Thanks.-DK---David KohlFly! II v230Dell 8200 P4/1.8G, 512MB RAM, Nvidia GF4 Ti4600 v28.83, WinXP Home Edition.CH Pro Pedals and Yoke US…

    Hi All,Some time ago, I said that I ad written a utility to *fix* wrongly written terrain (trn) files, produced bt the Fly!2 slicer.I've tested about as much as I can and it works for me. I can't say more :-)It is useful as a checking tool for those having problems with scenery tiles, and it can *fix* certain errors where present.It is NOT a cure-all for every problem.Those of you who don't get any problems, probably don't need it unless just for interest.It's Freeware and it's on my site now for anyone who is interested.ColinMy Hangar Site

    I'm not sure if I'm doing/reading this correctly, but when I set overcast and fly through cloud, my system starts to crawl.I took a screenshot with texture details - the 256 value on the second line is over 400 for my blank screen. (when I checked with MemCalc I need over 85 MB - a bit much for my GF264MB card ).Am I doing something wrong here?

    I'm trying to sink the warehouse model in the center of this picture 8' but I'm not having any luck. I've tried setting the properties in both TM2 and the FlyII editor to "sink model 8'". The properties will change but the model doesn't. Am I missing something or will only certain types of models actually sink?

    After changing 'Airport.pod' data in VolEdit 1.2 I am unable to get DexImport to work. When I click the 'Import' button on DexImport I get the message 'Unable to open E:Fly!11SystemAirport.pod-Error code 0x20 in D:ProjectsFly2podlibmappedfile cpp, line 69'.This same error occurs on both my PC's om which Fly!2 is installed.As you will realise E:Fly!11systemairport.pod' is the correct location for the 'airport.pod-which I have just opened and been able to modify with VolEdit. However I do not have a D drive on one machine and can't see why DexImport is trying to open 'D:ProjectsFly2 etc.'DaveT

    How does one figure out what land types are in a given area so that one can select the most accurate looking textures for that area? I've been "TerraScening" (new word - created here!) various parts of the US, but find that the default settings do not accurately reflect the ground types in a lot of the country. For example, I created scenery for Salt Lake City and found it to be to green, with too much farm-land. I could experiment by swapping texture assignments in the land-type selections, but there must be a more scientific way to do this? I'd like to be creating more realistic looking ground types (like jagged rocky mountains in the West or more urban and suburban loo…

    I've been working on a Python script, actually it's done, but I have one problem. I use the following line to assign a key, Alt-F:DefineKey(ID('fdky'), "Final Dest Setup", KB_KEY_F, KB_MODIFIER_ALT)The problem is that Fly!II assigns F, not Alt-F, when the script runs. Now you can go into the key assignments and change it to Alt-F, and it will stay that way even when you run the script again (go figure).I didn't want to release the script with this problem. Does anyone have any experience with this? If it is a bug in Fly, then I'll just release it with the explanation to go change the key assignment.thanks,nick

    I've downloaded Preston N's EGLL TM scenery. I noted that the scenery is currently broken out into invididual directories with lots of files. Before I ask my question, I'm wondering - was that done so that Fly would load these models instead of the default airport contained in the "cities.pod" file? If that's the reason, Scott Cannizaro has figured out how to remove certain airports from Cities.pod (did it with LGA and DCA so far). Doing so would eliminate this problem, and thus allow EGLL to be placed in a single POD. With that in mind, I have the following questions:1 - How does one remove the default EGLL from Cities.pod?2 - How does one then take Preston's terrific wo…

  22. Anyone considering using TerraModels to create DCA and IAD? The default DCA taxiways are screwed up as well, so even if someone could issue a taxiway patch for DCA it'll be helpful. But more realistic buildings there, and terminals at IAD would be great.Any takers?-DK----Fly!     It seems that TerraScene 2.1 is now being used by FS2002 users as well now. I wonder what the response to its use would be if there was a patch or update to use it to output BMP fil;es that could be imported for FS2002 use, with duel divided highway texture as in FS2002 and 4.8 m/p res.Any one else with thoughts on this subject?Richard;
