This forum and all others related to the FLY series of flight simulator, are dedicated to the memory of Richard Harvey - the lead designer for Terminal Reality's Fly.
At the AVSIM FANCON of 2002, Richard and his wife, Tara, attended. Richard was presented with AVSIM's Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the flight simulation genre and his outstanding service and support of the FS community. Richard was a friend to many of us, and never hesitated to assist and inspire. Richard passed away the following March, 2003. He is sorely missed by his friends and those that were privileged to know him.
Richard in his last post to the forums said; "Try to stay away from things that are dark, dreary, introspective, tear jerkers, etc. Think HAPPY -- be HAPPY. If that is too much to ask, then I'll change the word HAPPY to POSITIVE. That's the flow of feeling I want rolling through my soul as I depart this earth from each of you, is absolute POSITIVE energy. Don't stall on me, I have to soar!"
Richard also passed this along to us in his last post; "******* Christ is my Lord and Savior. As my loving God and Lord has protected and guided me throughout my life, I pray he will do likewise for you and your family. May each of you achieve your dreams, and not be troubled by hardships. I pray for your good health. God will only give you as much load as you can bear, and never any more. Do not lose hope, nor certainly faith. Above all, do not fear evil, for though it surrounds us it can never hurt us. It may claim hollow victories, but it always suffers defeat."
We are proud to carry on Richard's undaunted support for his passion and his unstinting support of the user. Welcome to the Richard Harvey Memorial Fly Forums! |

Does anyone know if there is a way to generate a .tga for a globe tile in Fly! that captures the generic scenery as laid out by Fly!? I was thinking that if it were possible to do this then we could use the scenery generated by Fly! as a layer in a program like photoshop and then add additional layers for lakes and rivers, roads, cities, etc. with shapefiles, merge it all and use it in Terrascene to replace the .tga generated by Terrascene that used only a single background texture because no LULC (land cover) data was available. That would give us much nicer detail/variety in areas where Fly! already generates excellent background (i.e., Alaska) but without roads, rivers…

Hello,I have there times few to ask to the airplanes specified already. As the first I wanted gladly to know where I the original airplanes of B757, B777 and P51 gets. I checked, but I did not find the original. It would nicely be if me someone say could. Best would be to be set equal the left into the forum.Secondly, I did not want to know gladly why the F-16 functioned. I always get thereby an error message. My knowledge after it only one F-16 or exestiert still another original exestiert? I have only the one F-16 found hope me also someone there to help can. thirdly, I down-loaded myself the original B747 Iberia. But this does not function also. Does someone have also …

I created TGA files using TerraScene, and afterwards, edited-out some square land-masses off the west coast of Oregon using Photoshop Elements. I edited both the original TGA file and the water mask. I saved the files to TGA format. All looked fine.I then re-launched TerraScene with the "use existing" options and the program proceded to POD the TGA files. Again, all looked fine. But when launching Fly!2, I got an error telling me that it couldn't load some texture (RAW) files. I opened the POD and discovered that all my RAW files in the POD were 1 byte (see attached screenshot).I verified this was the case in the DATADxxxyyy directory as well. It appears the Fly!2 slicer i…

Bonjour,I am trying to use both Terrashape (last version, downloaded yesterday) and TurboCAD LE (freely avalaible) for modifying coastlines data. But I have a major problem: dxf files (merged or not) created by Terrashape are not recognized by TurboCAD LE: I receive the following message when I attempt to load the .dxf file: "File Format Error Line 0".Is it a bug from Terrashape, TurboCAD? Or am I missing something? Thanks a lot for your help,Jeck

I know this is a long shot at this point but I was trying to render the elevation data for Alaska through Terrascene and got the following error message:tk.ts.f.a.a.d: Expected 1201 profiles for one degree (1:250,000) DEM!I did a thorough search of the Fly! forums (new, old, and very old) but have found no other reports of this particular error. Does anyone have a clue as to what it means and how I might resolve it. I'm only trying to get the elevations to import into Fly!2 as there is very little landcover data for Alaska available. I know the message above is for the 250K DEMs but I don't know what the "1201 profiles" might be.Thanks for any help, even wild guesses.Don

I thought I'd try my hand at adding (and TM'ing) a new airport, specifically, 21W (Ranger Creek in WA).I was able to add airport, runway, and comm records with no problems, and make DEX files so other folks could do that too.But now I've run into a problem. The TS'ed elevation grid, with its higher precision elevation data, differs in hight from the default grid by quite a ways (around 900 ft, if I recall right). No problem, I don't care much about the default elevation grid, but my airport sits right smack in a hilly area. I presumably can find a way to flatten the terrain (although I don't think I can use the flattenator) - but what happens when I want to distribute …

Hey guys, I have finally got TS2 up and running, both in OSX on my mac and in VPC. However, I am unable to find a copy of the PC version of Fly!2 around where I live, nor I am I able to find fly2slice in order to get the textures from Fly!2. Would the textures originally released for TS2 work, and where are they I cannot find them in Avsim's library. Thanks in advance.Keep 'em Flyin'Jesse

Hello,I have been adding scenery enhancements to the New York and Long Island area from your File Library. After doing a number of them, I started to recieve thefollowing error response when I tried to teleport to KJFK :Msg: Can't load texture DATAd2031597917A44F4.RAW: File not foundFile: texture.cpp line 1376Time: Sat Feb 15 16:05:27 2003errno = 2 (No such file or directory)I have located d203159. I have just attempted to render 100 miles around dtw. I have about 12 gigabytes of free space. What files in the Terracene and Fly 2 directories can I remove after the rendering is complete. It has been running since about 09:00 hours this morning. [email protected]

I am currently trying to build up the scenery at an existing airport. I added Taxiways and now I try to place objects with the editor. This is working fine, but some objects (buildings) seem to be misplaced after saving. Anyone else with this problem.I read in this forum, that there is a manual for this editor. But in my package (US-Version) there was none. On the CD and my HDD there is also no manual. Maybe I

Hi everyone,I thought I'd post a few screen shots of the Panel Maker that I'm writing for Fly!II. The programme will allow users to create brand new panels, import and edit existing Fly!II panels, cut and paste gauges between panels including gauges from Fly!II panels into brand new user created panels. As can be seen from the screen shots, gauges can be position graphically, and the gauge properties set though the panel maker interface. I've still got a fair bit of work to do on it, mostly defining and adding all the supported gauge types.Comments and suggestions will be much appreciated! :-)(I had to save the pics as jpgs, which is why the quality isn't particularly …

Several months ago, I TerraScened Seattle. Last week I was working on Portland. I realized that I had already Terrascened the top half of a tile that borders Washington and Oregon in my original project. So I Terrascenened the lower half with the Portland project.Unfortunately, as I found out by reading through archived posts on this subject, there is a bug in Fly!2 that prevents both "half tiles" from loading together.I figured I could try to unpod them both, create a new combined response file (thanks to Scott's help in a post in this forum), and re-pod the area, but I realized that the GXX.trn files will also have to be modified, presumably.Am I setting myself up for a…

I have a piece of Norwegian scenery which I just can`t upload without using elevation data. Without elevation data, my scenery is worthless.(As you understand I`m talking about Norway off course)...I have tried to use Flattenator Deluxe for days now, but this bugger is only quitting on me every time. Well if fixing elevations is such a blasted science on top of all the other stuff I have to master, then designing scenery is for me approaching a full stop :(I`ll try one last time. The Flattenator manual is very unclear about some steps. First, I am NOT going to flatten any airport, but the manual still describes this as a step. Can I just skip the airports part and go stra…

G'day all, After terrascene/terrashape my project I thought I would try yo add beaches to the coastlines. Unfortunately when I slice the modified tga file the coastlines end up with a black border edging which makes the beaches look as though there is a thick tidal oil slick at the waters edge. Looks like the "Exon Valdez" revisited. :-( Is there a cure/procedure/method to prevent this from showing.?Cheers,Roger @YSSY.ps. don't know if it will show up on the uploaded pic as it was taken at high altitude.

Does someone have an updated documentation for the SDK comming with the last patch ?It seems that the official doc I have, has been written for Fly! 1.I can imagine that P.D.M.G team, final patch team and other third party developers can have a more recent information.I have other projects in my mind for Fly! II, but it will require a minimum SDK information, and I think it's necessary to keep Fly! alive.Any information, even partial, is welcome !Thanks

I podded (using TerraScene) some scenery in Portland OR yesterday and forgot to remove some TerraModels from an old version of KPDX from my DATA/DXXXYYY directory. As a result, the TM's got Podded into my new POD. This is a problem b/c the old KPDX TM's have incorrect elevations and "float". I want to replace this old TM scenery with Wayne's new KPDX.Bottom line: I have the new (incorrect) POD. I still have the raw files in the DXXXYYY directory from TerraScene - I didn't delete them yet. I tried to POD the raw files using "MakePOD" but didn't know how to use the switches correctly. Can someone direct me to the instructions for doing so? I searched the forum and couldn't …

I've been considering Paint Shop Pro or PhotoShop Elements - I have a Dell PC with WinXP. I'm not a serious scenery designer or anything, but would like something I can use to edit TGA files produced by TerraScene where TerraScene places a large square land-mass off coastlines due to lack of data. I may also attempt - although not sure if I have the time or skills - to do some sat-photo importing and alignment for the New York area. Of course, I'd also use it for some digital photo editing, but I have a pretty basic program - Image Expert Pro - that seems to do just fine for the level I use it.Any recommendations that balance price with features?-DK----David KohlFly! What are the best settings to use when trying to important elevation data into fly 2?I know that the documentation warns against using the 8X8 setting so I just wondered if it was possible to use maybe a 6X6 value. Also, I'm really curious about the subdivide tolerance value. What is the minimum number value it supports? Basically, what I am trying to do is get the highest detail terrain mesh possible with FLYII. So in otherwords I should probably set the Density to 8X8 and the subdivide tolerance to a value of what? (1 foot???)Just curious.

G'day all,I've been trying to modify a shapefile using terrashape to convert the shapefile to a dxf file, importing the dxf file into quickcad and editing the dxf file. Once finished I use terrashape to convert back to a shapefile. However when I load the shapefile into my terrascene project and map the shapefile, when I re run the project terrascene runs fine, no errors, but when I fly over the new scenery the changes I made to the shapefile aren't included into the scenery. Can anyone please shed some light on the processes to be followed to modify a shapefile. I must be doing something wrong somewhere.Just one little quirk that I noticed. When I convert from dxf fil…

Just started looking at Python to see what I can do with it. Checking the Scripting manual from TRI, p64, which describes the SendMessage function refers to Appendix B which should contain 'A complete list of system and data tags'. Unfortunately, this appendix is missing. Is this information available from anywhere else?ThanksAndrew Luck18 miles SW EGSH

Hey guys, I cannot seem to find the proper setting spot for choosing the water-ocean.jpg file for the background texture when I go to render coastal areas. What I think is the correct setting, doesn't make any difference - the ocean will still fill with ground image. I'm whining - I know, but as I cannot load an entire globetile tga once rendered to correct, this would make life a little simpler - as I get problems with rendered halves. Example: Portland, Maine area.. I render the upper half of the globe tile (NW and NE) then do the lower so I can correct the water areas - yet I cannot get the two halves to come up (dang overlap bug).Anyone's guidance would be most app…

Hi all. Here is some recent experience, and a good tip on Fences:Recently I have found two important issues regarding Terramodels, the Editor and podding.First, I feel I can`t fully trust Terramodels. I always have to move the TM2.mlf file away from Fly2Data, if not, I get crashes in TM. Also when I choose to make a "Pod and Scf File Only", sometimes I get a incomplete or empty pod. My "safe method" is this: First make the response file, leave Terramodels and edit the response file manually, then choose "Package Scenery for Upload". This always works just fine. (Allen, hope you have some comments here, correct me if I`m wrong)When I want to package the scenery, I have to …

I'm on a spree of terrascening WA state, and have essentially the entire state (and much of OR) done. It's basically gone great, but I have a few problems:Somehow, I cannot TS the globe tile 167,165 (containing Gray's Harbor, WA). I mean, I can run TS, it goes fine, I get a nice POD file of what looks like the right size. But when I install it in Fly, and teleport to Bowerman, it just doesn't show up - I see only the default scenery.I've tried and tried again. I've removed everything else from my scenery and data directories. I've terrascened a 1/4 grid, a 1/2 grid, and the whole grid. I've done and redone it - I just cannot make this one show up :)Any idea what's u…

I have generated a photo-realistic Hamburg scenery (not Terrascene) which includes a lot of water surfaces. My water mask is all black-all white, and the slicer generates sufaces which look like water - reflection, colours and small moving waves, you name it. However, it is not possible to start the Stearman waterplane from these water surfaces (if you land there you get a lot of brown smoke!), and the helis don't show the characteristic ripples from the rotors air wash-down. The generic water surfaceshave all these properties you expect from water to the very edge of my scenery. Then there seems to be a narrow lane with no properties at all before my scenery starts. In a…
