September, 2002

This forum and all others related to the FLY series of flight simulator, are dedicated to the memory of Richard Harvey - the lead designer for Terminal Reality's Fly.

At the AVSIM FANCON of 2002, Richard and his wife, Tara, attended. Richard was presented with AVSIM's Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the flight simulation genre and his outstanding service and support of the FS community. Richard was a friend to many of us, and never hesitated to assist and inspire. Richard passed away the following March, 2003. He is sorely missed by his friends and those that were privileged to know him.

Richard in his last post to the forums said; "Try to stay away from things that are dark, dreary, introspective, tear jerkers, etc. Think HAPPY -- be HAPPY. If that is too much to ask, then I'll change the word HAPPY to POSITIVE. That's the flow of feeling I want rolling through my soul as I depart this earth from each of you, is absolute POSITIVE energy. Don't stall on me, I have to soar!"

Richard also passed this along to us in his last post; "******* Christ is my Lord and Savior. As my loving God and Lord has protected and guided me throughout my life, I pray he will do likewise for you and your family. May each of you achieve your dreams, and not be troubled by hardships. I pray for your good health. God will only give you as much load as you can bear, and never any more. Do not lose hope, nor certainly faith. Above all, do not fear evil, for though it surrounds us it can never hurt us. It may claim hollow victories, but it always suffers defeat."

We are proud to carry on Richard's undaunted support for his passion and his unstinting support of the user. Welcome to the Richard Harvey Memorial Fly Forums!

Hi all, I'm trying to make a pbm Icon file for a model I'm doing, but I cannot seem to get a version Fly!Graphics will recognize to convert. I've tried resizing to BMP, JPG, TGA, TIF in PhotoShop 7 then convert to the PBM with Fly!Graphics. Can someone provide a little insight as to what I might be doing wrong? Many thanks!Ken Wood :-sun1Gateway 700X; Intel P4 2.4GHz; 512MB RAM; NVIDIA Ti4200 4X AGP 128MB; SB Audigy; Thrustmaster TopGun Fox 2 Pro Shock

Here's what I have:In my attempt to add moving throttles with reverse from TRI31.pnl, which is the throttle panel, in the main cockpit panel, I moved the throttle gauge code into the main cockpit *.pnl file. I then converted the two throttle pbg files int bmp's, reduced their size, reconverted them to pbg files and edited their x,y position as well as the size in the gauge "code" section. Everything works beautifully, except that the reverse part of the throttle fails to work. The pbg files have a "frames" requirement as well as how these should be configured when dealing with "moving" slides. I even tried the original pbg files , and simply changed their x,y location. …

for some reason, the "3dxy" with x,y coordinates of 0,0 does not prevent the panel from scrolling downward. If I enter a -100 in the why coordinate, the panel will scroll and stop at this point. At 0,0, the panel scrolls all the way down. Why? I am working with an image(isiz) size of 1600 x 1300 and a 3d window(3dsz) size of 1600 x 1300. tony

Having been away from the FLY! series for a while, is there any way to display the gauges on secondary monitors, rather than on the main one? And, has anybody tried this with Parhelia triple head card. I'm getting somewhat weary of the MS products, but want to keep my cockpit setup....thanks for listening to my stupid questions...--jeff

I was wondering if anyone had toiled with the idea or developed a program that makes it easy to keep track of all installed Terrascene and Terramodels files? I have text files but that doesn't make it easy to pick a never flown to airport or to plan a fligh over TS areas. Something like Terrascene with the global tiles and airports highlighted would seem to be pretty good.JamesHmmm... Tastes Like Chicken!

Downloaded files from ArcExplorer to TS data files folder and tried to terrascene them, following the manual instructions given for Hong Kong. The area is that around Gisborne airport NZ. After I clicked the finish button (just before one starts the render process) the program froze.I note that NZ does not appear in the Terrascene map, does this mean I am unable to terrascene any of NZ or have I done something wrong?NZ is one of the world's most beautiful countries and because of it's small size makes it ideal for VFR with FlyII.:-beerchug

I can appreciate the hours and work needed to make FLY2 instrument panels, but slowly I've been trying to modify existing panels for a more 3d look. Here's an example. Notice the autopilot and upper panel that are much more raised, with increased shadow, as well as an upper center post. More work needs to be done, but it's not bad once one becomes familiar with a paint program. I am using Paint Shop Pro trial version, which is good for 60 days.tony

I have just used terrascene for the first time for KJAC.As recommended by David Kohl I renamed my FlyII data folder and after rendering then had the 'new'data folder from the Terrascene as well as my renamed former data folder.David says the 'new'folder can be deleted and the renamed former data folder renamed back to data.My questions are:1) what are all the files that are deleted in the terrascene 'new' data folder?2) Do I understand correctly that all the relevant data produced by the terrascene process is contained in the scenery POD file and scf file thus making it safe to delete the 'new' terrascene data folder?Thanks,:-newbie

A volunteer wanted. I need help with creating engine air inlet (simply a hole). Tried several times but it always turned into a disaster (more of hand-granade type of hole than precize and fine work). Never mind, I'm enclosing pictures of the plane. It's done in 3dmax. I can sent you the max file and some pictures what it should look like.Somebody interested?P.S. What a shame that gmax files cannot be exported. I have much nicer model with all holes from a friend of mine, who makes it for FS2k2. Regards,Rene S.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/28880.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/28881.jpg

Hi All,Here's a couple of pics of the latest function in TerraShape.I used tile 254-166 with Beralex's enhanced elevations for these shots.TerraShape has extracted the dem data from the *.trn files and made raw ras files. Then the contouring function has produced the 2nd image.I deliberately set the contour levels low just to test. The contour file is some 14.7mb!The 1st pic is the dem file, viewed in Global Mapper. The 2nd pic is the contour dxf file viewed in AutoCAD.Should be available soon :-)ColinEDIT:I give up!I've tried over and over to upload the jpgs, but I can't seem to get them up.They are on my site here

Hi, everyone. After using the other sim for a while , it would seem that FlyII is still our best chance to get a decent VFR tool.It would seem to me, correct me if I am wrong, that the two biggest issues, with the users are:1-Installation of all the patches, to get it set up and running.2-Large amounts of time and storage needed to make TS Scenery.I think that both of these can be overcome, with some effort, and these may not be the best options, jump in with ideas. An idea / solution for nr. 1.I think we can generate a CD, not sure about the Legality / Copyright on this, maybe someone from TRI can point the way, that has all the Patches and necessary System files, and th…

I was looking though the Python Adventure Scripting Language PDF the other day and noticed a lot of pre-defined conversions, etc. These appear to be the beginnings of an E6-B for Fly!II. I then started wondering if anyone had thought of this before or not. I keep thinking of this as an add-on to the Flight Planner, but am not sure how to start this. I have been reviewing the Python.org online documents and manuals, but this doesn't tell me everything. I don't know how to build a window, let alone how to use the UI graphics Fly!II has built into the UI.POD file. At the same time, I was also wondering how I would be able to add the E6-B to the Flight Planning drop dow…

Hi I have an 'almost done'* 3d model in 3dmax and trying to import it into FLY. Import goes alright, but when seeing the model, it displays with nose down. I tried to rotate the model in 3dmax to the appropriate position, but no matter what rotation I use (and save), display after export->import is always the same??I saw this mentioned in the ROTW manual, but rotating doesn't help. Any other way of switching the axes?Btw, I double checked I'm exporting the model with World coordinates selected. But one never knows. Thanks,Rene S.

Hi All,Just a quick update of what I am doing with TerraShape.TerraShape now does some DEM manipulation. It will read from Dted0, Gtopo30 and Globe files and extract the dem data for your current tile. In the case of Dted0, it will merge and form a DEM to the nearest whole degree all round your tile.TerraShape will produce the RAT file for TS2 and the RAS file for the Fly! slicer. It will create a Microdem 6 compatible file from the dem data and will also read the Microdem file format to translate back to RAS, RAT etc. if you have 'massaged' the data with Microdem. In addition, TerraShape will create a dxf contour file from any ras data that it has written. This can now be m…

For those of you who wish to download and generate my new Sedona, AZ TerraScenery, here are the package descriptions and recommended procedures.1. Download the Sedona, AZ Area TerraScene Project Pack: http://library.avsim.net/sendfile.php?DLID=33791The new red desert textures are a part of the pack and will be used automatically when the project is selected. If you wish to add none of my image fixes, you'll still get excellent scenery, though you will notice strange marks here and there. These are apparently caused by a few errors in the USGS data.2. If you wish to use my edits and repairs of the worst of these, download the Sedona Image Repair Kit #1: http://library.avsi…
