September, 2002

This forum and all others related to the FLY series of flight simulator, are dedicated to the memory of Richard Harvey - the lead designer for Terminal Reality's Fly.

At the AVSIM FANCON of 2002, Richard and his wife, Tara, attended. Richard was presented with AVSIM's Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the flight simulation genre and his outstanding service and support of the FS community. Richard was a friend to many of us, and never hesitated to assist and inspire. Richard passed away the following March, 2003. He is sorely missed by his friends and those that were privileged to know him.

Richard in his last post to the forums said; "Try to stay away from things that are dark, dreary, introspective, tear jerkers, etc. Think HAPPY -- be HAPPY. If that is too much to ask, then I'll change the word HAPPY to POSITIVE. That's the flow of feeling I want rolling through my soul as I depart this earth from each of you, is absolute POSITIVE energy. Don't stall on me, I have to soar!"

Richard also passed this along to us in his last post; "******* Christ is my Lord and Savior. As my loving God and Lord has protected and guided me throughout my life, I pray he will do likewise for you and your family. May each of you achieve your dreams, and not be troubled by hardships. I pray for your good health. God will only give you as much load as you can bear, and never any more. Do not lose hope, nor certainly faith. Above all, do not fear evil, for though it surrounds us it can never hurt us. It may claim hollow victories, but it always suffers defeat."

We are proud to carry on Richard's undaunted support for his passion and his unstinting support of the user. Welcome to the Richard Harvey Memorial Fly Forums!

G'day all,Just a brief update on the Beech model 65. Nearly finished the modeling work and then its texturing and figuring out how to implement the aircraft into Fly! II.At the moment it's 57 sub-assemblies all flying in very close formation. :-lolAll the tutorials seem to stop at the creation in 3dsMax. Does anyone know of a tutorial that covers putting a model into Fly! II?Cheers,Roger

Help from Colin or Randall (or anybody),I just downloaded the Fly Bearing & Distance Calculator and am coming up with strange results. I am trying to determine the coordinates of two runway ends given the centre position and runway length, but the result I get for Position 2 Latitude doesn't make sense. Here's the numbers and results:Position 1 - 33 22.60' & 115 40.90'Bearing - 247.5 (True)Distance - 507.5m (Half runway length of 1015m)Results:Position 2 - 33 3982.70'(!!) & 115 40.5968'As you can see the resultant latitude is certainly not a valid coordinate reference (is it?). I'm certainly doing something wrong but I don't know what. I have tried ot…

  3. I uploaded my first effort at creating POD files for Fly! II with Terrascene 2.1 today. It is called clarkhill.zip. I want to publicly thank Ken Salter for hints and tips. If anyone takes a look at it I would appreciate any comments, good or bad about it. Hope you like it.If you take off from Daniel Field in Augusta,Ga (DNL) and fly upriver you will see Lake Turmond Dam and after that is Lake Thurmond, formerly known as Clark Hill before it was renamed. Lake Thurmond is a large man made reservoir.Lots of water..Enjoy!Dan Husk

I am looking at a standard whl file from a default FLY2 aircraft and trying to relate it to the number of parts in the 3d model. What I find confusing is the role of the shock and springs as they relate to the 3d max animation. Since FLY2 appears to have only one "mandatory" 'gear*' when naming the 3d parts, I don't understand the relationship between the number of parts in the landing gear, the animation of the complete gear assembly( which I 've succeeding in doing) and the whl file. I've read Jean's tutorial, but still need some hand holding....;-)I am ultimately trying to import the new 3d model with a whl file from the Stearman aircraft or rotw Beechcraft whl file.to…

After weeks, and I mean weeks, of playing with 3d max and FLY2 and all the tutorials, I've succeeded in "figuring out" how to animate the ailerons. One of the best tutorials sites, which explains modeling in 3d max and particularily the type that affects FLY2,is Battlefield 1942 tutorial at http://www.inicia.es/de/lorenmarti/tutorials_01.htmThis is just a fantasctic site for speeding things up.tony

Hi,I fidling around with Terrascene 2.1 in the Chicago area.To be specific I selected the north east side of tile 193,160. Starting a rendersession with default basetextures gives me a square of marshland were there should be water. I noticed that this happens when there is no dem-data available.I tried to render again with the GeoDataFilter.FillMissingUsgsWater=true in my configfile. The result is the same. See the picture of the daytextures. How can I correct this?

Boy, it's been long, but I think I see light at the end of the tunnel.Today, after weeks of intens reading on modeling and texturing( and not understanding much) I produced the first FLY2 aircraft model. It's a Lockeed Electra, the one that Amelia Aheart flew . FSDS compared to 3dmax is simple, especially when it comes to adding textures. It's a simple click away. For the elctra model, I've used one from fs2000 and am converting it to a FLY2 hierchical protocol. It's exciting stuff, but boy it's not easy.tony

OK.I've drawn a simple cylinder and exported it with the TRI plug in .Now I get a SModel::load-corrupt error when I load the model in the FLY editor. What is it?I am assuming that initially I don't need to worry about texturing a model. I noticed that in the s3d file, there's no reference to a tga file. I thought that the FLY editor would produce one.tony

The other day, I happened to look at some books on 3d max and, to my surprise, I noticed that the "dummies" series includes a full trial cd of 3dmax 5. I purchased it and , to my delight, I have the TRI export module that converts 3d models into s3d files easily. The trial will last for 30 days before it can no longer be used. So, reinstall the cd and continue..... 3d max 6 will not recognize the TRI plugins, but 5 does. What a bargain . Go get yourself a copy of 3ds max 5 for dummies and start designing airpalnes. Use the mdldfx converter and all the fs2000 models come to life in minutes.tony

I notice that the plugins stop at version 4. Does this mean that they will not work for 3d max version 5 or 6? If not, what are the options other than looking for an old copy of 3d max 3-4?

I wish we had a bit more information on how to convert successfully FLY to FLY2 aircrafts. It's a shame that some aircrafts, such as the dc3, the b25, and the emb 120 are gathering dust in the hangar. The only documentation by ALAn Kaiser has a few missing pieces which, unfortunately, stop the process cold.If anyone has a 1-2-3 solution, I'd appreciate some pointers.Thanks.tony

Hi folks:I recently upgraded my new computer and installed Fly!2 on it. I was copying files from my old machine, and I seem to be missing something on the new install. The old PC has some wonderful scenery I generated with Terrascene2 between Grand Junction, CO and Denver. I can't seem to be able to find where the files are that I need to copy to my new install. I'd like your advice on what directory they might be in, and what they might be called or what file type they are. This was really much simpler for Fly2K, and I did just have to copy files over (".epd" files in the "Scenery" folder).I would really like to use the old scenery since it was generated with the high…

Hi Folks, looking for a SIMPLE guide on creating DME's. I have thanks to the excelent ILS tutorial by Robert Pelletier a little while back managed to put all the posted ILS approaches I have for Canada at the appropriate airports & they work superbly. Now I would like to know how to create a DME for some of them. i.e. what location do I set for them Lat & Long. I see from Harolds tutorial from some time back that the number is 16 instead of 64 or 128 but I don't know where the number is derived from. Is it some point along the runway for example? Also I would like to learn how to put in OM MM IM for these. Thanks in advance for anything on these.Desmond

  17. Hello all,Recently purchased an ACP Compact and really love it in FS9. FlyII didn't support keyboard tuning of radios and therefore the ACP is programmed for various other functions, curious if anyone ever developed a workaround for this so that the keystrokes programmed in to the ACP could be made to work the radios and autopilot. Unfortunately the ACP is programmed by an EPROM and therefore cannot be modified. I would sincerely appreciate any help here, even if it is just direction to where there are instructions on how to do this myself. Thanks,Zane

Hello Everyone! First, I'd like to give a BIG THANKS to Wayne for his tireless efforts in making all those airports, especially the ones in Florida to complement my scenery. Next, I've started to Terrascene the Hawaiian Islands using Tiger 2000 shapefile data. As someone stated before the LULC data appears corrupt in the public domain. I've downloaded some 100k LULC but Terrascene doesn't seem to like it. Without podding the scenery on Oahu looks good but there are no farms. Any ideas?JamesHmmm... Tastes Like Chicken!

What and where do I get the latest SDK's for FlyII. The stuff I have seems to have no info on some of the code I see in peoples samples.I've just finished a rather daunting project and haven't given FlyII any time since I did the FFB support module. My next project will make you want to play FlyII all the time. I'm not making any promises or giving any hints on what it is, but I think you'll all love what I've got in mind - if I can pull it off.So anyway, if someone can point me to a link for the latest SDK docs that would be appreciated.Josh

Hi David,I have a problem after importing a METAR in Fly! through SquawkBox :- I create a temp file with a unique airport METAR,- Then I use APILoadMetar() func to load the temp file in Fly!,- The clouds, temperature, Qnh ... are updated in Fly!But the altimeter does not show the correct value.Strange effect : after importation, if I open the menu "Weather->Other" and validate it with "OK" button, without any change, the altimeter refreshes iself to a right value after a few seconds.Do you have any idea ?Thanks

With TS2 I have produced 9 quarter tiles which include parts of four globe tiles for the area between Jackson Hole Wyo.in the south and Yellowstone in the north. The size of the nine PODS is 704,231kb.Comparing this with other TS projects in the File Library it seems very large. Is this because it is a mountainous area and so has a lot of data relating to the variations in elevation or have I done something wrong? The scenery runs beautifully in FlyII.:-hmmm
