Lake Tahoe September, 2002 |
This forum and all others related to the FLY series of flight simulator, are dedicated to the memory of Richard Harvey - the lead designer for Terminal Reality's Fly.
At the AVSIM FANCON of 2002, Richard and his wife, Tara, attended. Richard was presented with AVSIM's Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the flight simulation genre and his outstanding service and support of the FS community. Richard was a friend to many of us, and never hesitated to assist and inspire. Richard passed away the following March, 2003. He is sorely missed by his friends and those that were privileged to know him.
Richard in his last post to the forums said; "Try to stay away from things that are dark, dreary, introspective, tear jerkers, etc. Think HAPPY -- be HAPPY. If that is too much to ask, then I'll change the word HAPPY to POSITIVE. That's the flow of feeling I want rolling through my soul as I depart this earth from each of you, is absolute POSITIVE energy. Don't stall on me, I have to soar!"
Richard also passed this along to us in his last post; "******* Christ is my Lord and Savior. As my loving God and Lord has protected and guided me throughout my life, I pray he will do likewise for you and your family. May each of you achieve your dreams, and not be troubled by hardships. I pray for your good health. God will only give you as much load as you can bear, and never any more. Do not lose hope, nor certainly faith. Above all, do not fear evil, for though it surrounds us it can never hurt us. It may claim hollow victories, but it always suffers defeat."
We are proud to carry on Richard's undaunted support for his passion and his unstinting support of the user. Welcome to the Richard Harvey Memorial Fly Forums! |

G'day all, Get it whilst it's available. Truespace 3.2 is an amazing 3d program and thanks to Chris Wallace ( author of TS2S3D (available in Avsim hangar site) ) it can be used for models for Fly! II. This is the full blown ridgy didge complete version. NOT A TRIAL VERSION. A few years ago it would have sold for $$$. Now Caligari are offering it for free. It also comes with the trueview plugin which is a nice plus.http://www.caligari.com/products/truespace/ts3/ Cheers,Roger

G'day all,Just a couple of pics of my latest baby under construction with Truespace. It's definitely a boy! ( you can see the the little bits :-lol ) Amazingly I read that 349 of these (all variants) were built and found service with British, German, Indonesian and Australian Navies.Cheers,Roger

G'day all,Could someone please confirm whether gear UP is frame 0 and gear DOWN frame 30or is it the reverse of above. I known that animation can be reversed in the files later but why not get it right the first time. :-)Also is there any way to circumvent the 100 parts limit for models? It's surprising how quickly they mount up and I'm fast approaching. Thanks in advance,Cheers,Roger

Hi everybody,I have an idea for a DLL that might be kind of cool, but I'm pretty new to the DLL consept of Fly!2. I have studied all available source-code for DLL, but have not found anything similar with what I'm trying to do.Basically, I have a model (not an aircraft) that I want to change texture of (based on some input), and was wondering how that might be accomplished. To me it seems like this is kind of a similar problem solved by LaurentC with his multiple aircraft night-lighting system. So Laurent, or anybody else, if you could either drop me a private message or post your comments to my problem here, I would appreciate it.Cheers,Geir StrandStavanger, Norway

the two landing lights are transparent and fail to turn on in FLY2. What's wrong with my naming convention in 3d max and the amp, elt files? thanks.tony

Guys I was wondering is it possible to create a small progam to create scenery splines for Fly2 IE for generic houses, roads and the like. This is used very well in other simulators like Trainz. And more to the question is do we have a programmer to do this...SteveMy Websitehttp://www.wrexhamspace.orghttp://www.f2fdesign.com/ http://www.wrexhamspace.org/Steves%20Card.jpg

I had to reload 3d max after reinstalling my win xp OS. Of course, the settings for the TRI plug ins were lost, and now I cannot test the models without getting an error whenever I try to load the model in the Keyframe editor. In the past, this was attributed to some confusion regarding how this plug in was configured. Specifically, the output directory. Can someone upload a pic this plug in so I can see what, if anything, is different about my configuration. Thanks.tony

How to remove the blue that seems to penetrate my engines? In 3d max everything looks good, I think.tony

G'day all, Finally starting to feel a little better with the "black art" :-) but just a few simple questions.1. If I assign a texture to a small part ( eg. pitot probe ) by object in 3ds max, then when I select to render the scene, a "missing mapping co-ordinates" warning box appears but max still renders the part OK. Is this acceptable to the Fly! editor or MUST all parts be mapped! ??2. Sometimes, not always, when I map a suface and apply the texture, the texture is applied to BOTH sides of the surface and not just the side that I have selected? I checked to make sure that I only have the one side selected.? Any ideas as to what my problem might be?3. If a si…

G'day all,Ah the golden years.... when aircraft were designed by engineers with hearts and souls and an eye for beauty. Nothing stirs the emotions like an inverted Gypsy....Still a ways to go but progressing slowly. I have been experimenting with textures as you can see, but once the tif file is produced the final painting will be done in Photoshop. Cheers,Roger

I have downloaded the ecw plugin so that I can view the Fly maps within paintshop pro. What I would like to be able to do is convert all of the maps I have from Aeroplanner (sectionals, TAC's, Hi/Lo IFR enroute for entire US) which are in the .geo/.nos format to the .ecw/.map format used by Fly. Is there a way to do this? I thought I had seen a tutorial by RW a while back but cannot find it now... maybe just looking in the wrong places. Any help would be greatly appreciated.Zane

I am over my head and tired of looking at the electra model. For some reason, I am able to export the textured model as an s3d file.I am then able to use the FLY2 keyframe editor to import the s3d file. Everything appears normal, except for a few objects that "do not have a texture". When I load the model, however, I receive a "SMaterial:: load-corrupt". In fact I cannot open FLY2( having the electra as the default plane)without getting the same error. I'll be happy to send the *.max file and see where I've gone wrong. I confess that texturing, uv mapping and the entire 3d max material editor are finallly driving me out of my mind, especially after spending many hours add…

Hi!1.)I wanted to ask where I can get the SDK for Fly!1 ? I've googled it but nearly all links are dead Where can I get it from???How to produce those Gauges? Is Micorsoft Visual C++ 6.0 doing well for that??? Is there also a tut. about panel files? (pnl). They look a bit more complex than the MSFS panel.cfg files.2.) I've downloaded a Hawker with a working MFD on board(from Are Barstad). And a King Air with GPS. Now, the problem is that I've got those planes 2 times in my aircraft folder. That's really not beautiful. How can I build those functions direclty into the original aircraft??? I can't import files into a POD file, I just can extract them. (using PODVIEW.EXE)The…

When I export from 3d max to s3d tri format, one the files always has a file named as posted above. Is this normal?tony

In my panel editing, I've lost the function of the altimeter. The needles are there, but they are unresponsive to altitude change and to the little knob that sets the altitude. The pressure window reads 00, so I must have left some thing out. In the pnl file everything seems ok. What I am missing?tony

Hi All,Following some tests, trials and discussions we had on Simvol about SRTM importation, I've made a small tool that allow the conversion of the .BIN merged files exported by 3DEM to the standard .RAS file that Fly! 2 editor can import directly.Give me your feedback, hope it will be usefull ;-)- roland -* AirFeedback 1.0 ** DragPoder 1.0 ** SquawkBox 3.1 *

Modeling a FLY2 plane is crazy. There I was. Not knowing anything about 3d modeling, animation, skinning, texturing, flight modeling, etc. , and after months of love and desperation, the baby starts to look more and more human. Here you see the fuselage that I've textured( using an existing fs texture) so as to keep my work load to a sane level. I must admit that the texturing part, that is, to take the model from 3d to a 2d , which is called uv mapping, and then applying the paint, was the most difficult part to understand. I finally got it. I must have gone through dozens of tutorials for this. The flight model is coming along just fine. I started working on the panel, s…

G'day all,Due to my ignorance when I put the TOP viewport background bitmap into 3dsmax I did so with the aircraft facing down.Very weird views in 3dsmax. I've used many tech drawings in both 1st and 3rd angle projection. Max uses neither. Went ahead and built the aircraft.I later realised the axis (thingy) in the lower L/H corner of each viewport had the Y axis arrow pointing rearwards. Not forwards like in Jeans tutorials. No problem - simply mirror the aircraft about the Y axis I thought.I did this this and now as can be seen in the attachment in all views the Z axis is pointing upwards, the Y axis is pointing forwards ( at least in the top, left and perspective viewport…
