September, 2002

This forum and all others related to the FLY series of flight simulator, are dedicated to the memory of Richard Harvey - the lead designer for Terminal Reality's Fly.

At the AVSIM FANCON of 2002, Richard and his wife, Tara, attended. Richard was presented with AVSIM's Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the flight simulation genre and his outstanding service and support of the FS community. Richard was a friend to many of us, and never hesitated to assist and inspire. Richard passed away the following March, 2003. He is sorely missed by his friends and those that were privileged to know him.

Richard in his last post to the forums said; "Try to stay away from things that are dark, dreary, introspective, tear jerkers, etc. Think HAPPY -- be HAPPY. If that is too much to ask, then I'll change the word HAPPY to POSITIVE. That's the flow of feeling I want rolling through my soul as I depart this earth from each of you, is absolute POSITIVE energy. Don't stall on me, I have to soar!"

Richard also passed this along to us in his last post; "******* Christ is my Lord and Savior. As my loving God and Lord has protected and guided me throughout my life, I pray he will do likewise for you and your family. May each of you achieve your dreams, and not be troubled by hardships. I pray for your good health. God will only give you as much load as you can bear, and never any more. Do not lose hope, nor certainly faith. Above all, do not fear evil, for though it surrounds us it can never hurt us. It may claim hollow victories, but it always suffers defeat."

We are proud to carry on Richard's undaunted support for his passion and his unstinting support of the user. Welcome to the Richard Harvey Memorial Fly Forums!

I have updated the MapFile topic on the Wiki with the following text to list the valid types of maps that are specified in the tag of a MAP file. Laurent, I just got into town after a short business trip and haven't checked your map helper application yet, but if you haven't already, it might be a good idea to add the ability to select the map type and write the appropriate value.-------------------------------------------------------Indicates the map type. The Select Map dialog allows the list of available maps to be filtered by the map type. Allowable values are: 1 - Sectional Chart 2 - Terminal Area Chart 3 - ??? Hi all,As planned earlier (previous Tony's post : signs in airports vector map) we wanted :1) to create a very low time consuming (for me !) add-on and an easy to add database (for you !)2) to have a nifty tool to find your way in airportsAfter some tests it turned out that a chart of the airport was the easiest way to keep with the tower taxiways commands.LFPO for instance has so many signs (see the included example) that it would have been really boring to add them manually in a database !Then I prepared an easy addon for airports charts ...Two examples are provided : LFPO and KSFO.The handwork is quite easy : 1) just have a pic then convert it in PBM file2) fill two no…

Hellosince I'm the proud owner of a new G5 Dual 1.8 with a nice ATI Radeon Card and the new Virtual PC 7 I'm finally able to explore TerraScene :-) I've already rendered some Carolina projects offered by Randall Rocke (thank you!) and it worked fine. Now I've had a look in the TS Manual and I have some (probably silly) questions:1. What is the difference between working say with the Fontana Lake material from Randall Rocke and rendering the same area just with the automatic download by TS?2. Randall Rocke offers a complete set of folders (data-files, output and projects), which makes it extremely easy to create the scenery. The Florida Scenery material of James Burn conta…

For online flying, ATC provides clear taxiing instructions. While it's important to have an airport taxiway diagram for taxiing, it would be great if the taxiways that appear in the vector map had taxiway signs. I am not referring to out of the aircraft view, but the taxiways that appear when the the vector map is at full zoom. If we could add signs of the alphabet, taxiing would be so much easier when under atc control. Where does the vector map get its taxiways information? tony

Donny AKA ShalomarFly 2 ROCKS!!!I like being able to read a menu and just punch in a number instead of remembering key commands. Also those ground control generated arrows are very useful when taxiing. These two things have been a factor preventing me from using C4TO. Is it possible to improve the default ATC pod? I have a few suggestions if so. First, minor changes that would make it MUCH better.Include active runway info in ATISList wypoints in clearance requests or specify "direct"Force ATC to assign runways selected in flight plan waypoint detailsAdd "request approach vector" to approach and tower options without an open IFR planHave Center initiate letdown at a 3 to …

G'day all,The propeller on an aircraft I'm makeing is animated and spins in the correct DOR but it only spins at approximately 30 RPM. If anything it slows down slightly when I open the throttle. Anyone know what I'm not doing. I've looked at the prp and eng files but can't see anything obviously wrong ( to me :-) ) Thanks for helpingCheers,Roger @YSSY

You just missed the show by a couple of minutes, Alex...tsk tsk tsk that's what you get for going out and drinking beer!Anyway, here are some screenshots showing the results of a quick converter I've put together to convert .BGL files to .S3D. The BGL files are generated by the FS2002 gamepack exporter for Gmax. The model is the sample "Building" model (New York New York hotel in Las Vegas). So basically this provides a means for anybody with FS2002 or FS2004 to create high quality static models for Fly! Hi all,To continue with the Danieletona previous post related to sounds in sceneries, I prepared a first dll that associates a sound to an object (or many) in a Snn scenery file. The zip (link below : 63 Kb) contains a complete example and descriptions of the way the dll can be used. This is a first attempt and it needs probably some improvements ...BTW sounds are not yet attached to posts, then I'm sorry I can't give here an example, eh, eh !http://rotw.simvol.org/beta/Project_Scener...S_SOUND_v10.zipCheers,laurentC (rotw)http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/106650.gif

And I thought it was a pity I could not move my models over to 3DSMax in order to still throw in a Fly II scenery model now and then.Well I just found out...thanks to Quake3. :-hah I downloaded MD3 exporter and 3D Exploration (a very nice program) from here: http://gearheadheaven.racerplanet.com/miscfile.htm(The dll is to be placed in GmaxStdplugs). And fortunately, I read a tip about what to do before exporting at a German site. Here goes:Open Gmax, bring up your model. Go to the toolbar on the right side, choose "options" (the hammer symbol). Then use "Reset Xform" on your model, then collapse the stack. Gents and Gentettes,I'm having some issues trying to make watermasks with TS21 using non-usgs data. Here's where I'm stuck:I go to http://geogratis.cgdi.gc.ca/CLI/frames.html and click on land use. I've been downloading the UTM projected files for the eastern provinces as described in the TS21 docs - I'm trying to render the St. Lawrence seaway right now, but I'd like to apply this method to other areas outside the continental USA...First, is there a free converter for the E00 files to create shp files? I've been using FME, but the demo is expired, and I thought the USGS DLGV32pro would do it, but I get a "functionality not available until you register" message.Second,…

G'day all,I think I have it sussed out but just to be sure, better to check than be sorry. :-) A bit of a basic question but just exactly what files do I need to to include in the upload of a model to the library.? Will just the *.smf do or do I need the *.s3d and *.tif as well. If I'm thinking straight ( and that's a rare occurance :-) ) if the *.s3d file is included then that would enable the user to scale bridges to their own needs in the fly! II editor. Should I also make an *mlf file or leave that to the user.?Cheers,Roger

Hi All, I have been fighting with this ILS for a couple of years on & off & can not find the solution. Here is the problem, when coming in on an ILS to runway 15 at Halifax International, Canada CYHZ I am always approaching on about a 10 to 15 degree angle to the left of the runway. So I thought, easy fix I will just correct the approach with TM2.2, Excell & Voledit,I have done this several times using slightly different numbers in Voledit but always seem to end up on the same approach, also although I have a GS it never shows up on the approach, I have added a DME to this approach, also Rwy 33 which does work OK. Question: is it possible that TM has the wrong…

I am in the process of correcting the gross ground tile errors in NZ ( there are hundreds). I discovered that if they are not corrected before one tries to create scenery with better elevations one has problems such as holes in mountains that one can fly through and very sharp jagged points and vertical sheets of water at 1,000 feet or higher. One problem I have come across are tiles of water that are bright blue in colour after correction in lakes that are of 'normal' colour. An example would be Globe Tile 119,91; Ground tiles 2,16 and 3,16.Can anyone explain why this is and how to correct the colour to 'normal' water colour?Thanks,:-hmmm

Hi all,I have three questions.1- Some days ago, I flew on the scenery Venice/Lago in FS9 and I was appreciating the included sound effects. My question: be also possible in FLY! "to hook" of the sounds to an object? Is there already perhaps this possibility? 2 - In the same scenery I observed the static objects that had some mobile parts as a radar. Be also possible in FLY! to move a part of a static object?3- To pilot a helicopter, besides the normal instrument of flight, it is used a lot of our perspective sense. In a simulator this sense comes to miss. What do I propose? The possibility to add some sights of the cabin.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/102300.jpgThan…

Hello die hard Fly developers,I have been messing with a voice recognition ATC software package for FS2004 called VoxATC developed by Tegwyn West in the UK. I was curious if any of you had taken a look at this program and what the possibility would be of making a Fly/FlyII version? As many of you found the default ATC didn't work well, FlyScripts and C4TO are more usable but the standard recordings get old pretty quick and they are not region specific. ATCsynth, a program Didier Rigault from ROTW worked on in 2002 actually had a lot of promise but there has been no further updates. I am thinking that a merging of the work done by Didier with further enhancements and u…

  24. Happy New Year to all,I have tried to import some elevation SRTM data using the Fly II Scenery Editor with surprising results, see screenshots. Is it because I used the wrong settings for the Samples, (Width and height) boxes or the wrong Subdivide Tolerance or is it because of the holes in the SRTM data?I set the maximum density to 8X8.I used about a quarter of a 3 Arc- sec file converted by 3DEMBIN2RAS Can anyone help me improve on this?Thanks,:-hmmm
