September, 2002

This forum and all others related to the FLY series of flight simulator, are dedicated to the memory of Richard Harvey - the lead designer for Terminal Reality's Fly.

At the AVSIM FANCON of 2002, Richard and his wife, Tara, attended. Richard was presented with AVSIM's Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the flight simulation genre and his outstanding service and support of the FS community. Richard was a friend to many of us, and never hesitated to assist and inspire. Richard passed away the following March, 2003. He is sorely missed by his friends and those that were privileged to know him.

Richard in his last post to the forums said; "Try to stay away from things that are dark, dreary, introspective, tear jerkers, etc. Think HAPPY -- be HAPPY. If that is too much to ask, then I'll change the word HAPPY to POSITIVE. That's the flow of feeling I want rolling through my soul as I depart this earth from each of you, is absolute POSITIVE energy. Don't stall on me, I have to soar!"

Richard also passed this along to us in his last post; "******* Christ is my Lord and Savior. As my loving God and Lord has protected and guided me throughout my life, I pray he will do likewise for you and your family. May each of you achieve your dreams, and not be troubled by hardships. I pray for your good health. God will only give you as much load as you can bear, and never any more. Do not lose hope, nor certainly faith. Above all, do not fear evil, for though it surrounds us it can never hurt us. It may claim hollow victories, but it always suffers defeat."

We are proud to carry on Richard's undaunted support for his passion and his unstinting support of the user. Welcome to the Richard Harvey Memorial Fly Forums!

First attempt using Terrascene 2.1 and Randall Rocke great project packs. Read TS manual, forums, everything I could find. However, everything goes smoothly during render process until message: "tk.ts.d.a.IO exception:C:program filesTerrascene 2.1texturesbaseswampbog.jpg (system cannot find file specified)"Cannot find/don't know where to look for such a file. Also tried re-rendering "using existing segments"--Where did I go wrong?

What do you think of Integrated Video Cards. Are they as good as others. Does that mean they reside on the mother board and cannot be upgraded. Titus

Hello everbody! I am afraid I can't say I know much about programing but in anticipation of the Lancair Columbia 300, I am looking for some infromation on making a moving map on the aircraft panel. I would make a link or attach a pic. or some thing but I don't know how. specifically, it's a Flight monitor from AvroTec/Avidyne. If you go to http://www.lancairusa.com/columbia300.html and there is a brochure that shows you some pics and gives some more info.If it can't be done... oh well.If it can... Yay! It will be more work for Dan Larson, but it is worth a shot.

Is there a line in the config file that can be modified to make the distance to arrival airport less when asked by center to contact approach. When using the default ATC you will be asked to contact approach and many times you are not close enough to the airport for the frequency to show the arrival airport. If you tune the requested frequency you get a closer airport sharing the same approach frequency. I have been just ignoring the request until close enough the autotune for approach will give the arrival airport but there must be a setting that could be altered to allow this frequency change request to occur when closer to the airfield.Any help is much appreciated.Z…

  7. As you can already guess I've been spending time with the Navajo model. The visual model used in FlyII is a Panther modified "B" model (no stretch fuselage, nacelle baggage extensions and flat nacelles with four blade props). I did not own Fly! but the photos represent a proper factory Chieftan (which is what I want to be able to repaint!). Is there a way to use the visual model from Fly! or with the proper software could I modify the visual model in FlyII? Any work done will be shared :)Zane

I've been working over the Kodiak files to more closely match what I remember my father's Navajo performing like. I have included the files below, they go in the "world" folder. Anyone that wants to futz with them and let me know what further mods should be done. I don't think the EGT is accurate but you get full rpm on takeoff and climb performance is greatly improved. BTW ATC now will recognize the aircraft as a Navajo with the call sign N7ZG (my father's)... I've done several searches for this call sign and cannot find it in the FAA listing or NTSB accident reports. I was able to track it down in 1990 but I imagine it was sold and re-registered. It was the first …

Hi GMAX users, I received a nice piece of a plane model in gmax format, but I'm using 3dmax and relized that the formats are not compatible. In 3dmax, I can't open *.gmax files neither convert them.Is there any way of saving the model in gmax in autocad format or the 3dmax (*.max)?Could somebody convert the file for me?Thanks,Rene S.

Just some random thoughts I had this morning as I was messing around in Fly!II. How hard would it be to yank the floats off of the Stearman and stick them on the Cessna 172? To all the aircraft modelers, how hard would it be to make an amphibious 172? Or even just a float version would be cool enough. Here's another. Could someone take the cool PA-19 from ROTW, pull out some of the gauges, back the horsepower down to 80, but a wood background for the panel and call it a J-3 Cub? I believe there was already a Cub for Fly!2k. Can you convert models between Fly!2k and Fly!II? What about giving the default Stearman 400 horsepower and a paint job from the military trai…

I edited one of the posts with a paint program. After the conversion from pbm to bmp, the background screen appeared red. I edited the post, left the background color untouched, saved the new image, converted it to a pbm. When I load the aircraft with the new edited post, the red background color shows up. This, of course, hides the scenery and part of the panel. I've changed the color of the background( to black), and, still, it gets in the way. What did I do wrong? I am using a freeeware paint program, Image Forge, and can't seem to figure out th trick. It does not always do with other bmp images, since I had tried another image and everything looked fine. This one is …

I've taken a left view dc9 bmp shot and converted it to an act and pbm file(with FLY Graphics) with a name to match an existing panel. I've added these two files in the "world" folder, thinking that these two files would replace the "podded files", but I still don't see the new panel image. Any ideas?tony

you can simply extract your plane's *.whl file into a temp folder, change the turn radius to a smaller number, and place the file in FLY2's "world" folder. This has enabled me to fly the b1900 into smaller airport where the taxiway is the runway, so a plane's ability to turn more precisely is important.tony

Is there a tutorial on how to sequence their animation?I haven't seen it on any FLY2 plane yet, but asking, just in case.Rene S.

Hey Todd.I was searching through the forum on creating scenery and a thought hit me. We should have some stickies for different how-tos on development topics such as scenery creation, aircraft creation, etc. Just have some place with the basic FAQs for each laid out like what you need, where to get it possibly, and a basic tutorial on them. I know we have for for database editing and TerraScene, but aircraft modelling and custom modelling of buildings and such in scenery are difficult to sort through in the search. I've been able to shift the main runway at Kenai Municipal Airport(PAEN) using TerraModels and RWYFIX, how ever the runway that is causing me the most grief does not show in my TM, and it is completely in the wrong spot. At the real airport there is a 2000 foot gravel strip off a ways to the side parralelling the larger, in fly too there's a 2000 foot concrete runway that intersects the main runway. I want to add taxiways to this airfield however I need to move or remove the erroneus runway.John S. MorganReal World: KGEG, Student 33+ hours.Virtual: Fly!II, KPHX, MIDCON, PMDG Boeing 757-200

Hello all! Been laboring over my Pilatus repaint and getting dirty looks from the wife! Almost done but I'd like to add some chrome to the propeller hub, air intake and exhausts. Using rgb 204 204 204, it just looks gray. Using photoshop 7. Thanks! If I get her done before the 4th I'll post for all, if not will have to wait until I'm back towards the end of July. Hmmm... 20. After about 4 months of searching, I finally navigated the AK geospacial clearing house to find DLG files for Alaska, the road DLGs unfortunately appear to all be dead links, but the hydrology files are downloading just fine, I haven't tested them in Terrascene yet, however. So far I've only veiwed them through a geodata veiwer. With anyluck, I'll have the Cook Inlet area fairly well detailed someday soon. Now just to find some place that has more then just Valdez in the way of LULCs. ;)If any other scenery developers want to try the files in their area, the files all can be accessed from this page: http://agdc.usgs.gov/data/usgs/geodata/dlg...rography_S.htmlIt'll initial…

I'm in the process of making scenery for San Diego, CA East to Yuma, AZ and have a question regarding using the Shapefiles generated by ArcExplorer2 to use for the Mexico side. In the Terrascene tutorial they mention only six files that you will need from ArcExplorer... these do not appear in the file generated for NW Mexico. The files that do appear are the following six: awriv3ml.shp, awriv3mp.shp, awsadmin.shp, awscitie.shp, awswrlda.shp and mdworld3.shp. Are these files usable and if so which attributes (using the wizard) would I assign so that Terrascene uses them correctly. If there is another source for these Mexico files please let me know... I have added the Abate (HI) NDB for the ILS approach to runway 12 at KHIO using the database editor within Fly!II. It is functional when 356.0 is tuned and the correct icon shows up in the map view but there is no information in the detail view of the map, nor can it be used in a flight plan (coordinates 0,0). I marked this entry for export when I added it and then ran the automated utility to create a navaid index. What did I miss? Any help would be appreciated.Zane
