Richard Harvey

Lake Tahoe

September, 2002

This forum and all others related to the FLY series of flight simulator, are dedicated to the memory of Richard Harvey - the lead designer for Terminal Reality's Fly.

At the AVSIM FANCON of 2002, Richard and his wife, Tara, attended. Richard was presented with AVSIM's Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the flight simulation genre and his outstanding service and support of the FS community. Richard was a friend to many of us, and never hesitated to assist and inspire. Richard passed away the following March, 2003. He is sorely missed by his friends and those that were privileged to know him.

Richard in his last post to the forums said; "Try to stay away from things that are dark, dreary, introspective, tear jerkers, etc. Think HAPPY -- be HAPPY. If that is too much to ask, then I'll change the word HAPPY to POSITIVE. That's the flow of feeling I want rolling through my soul as I depart this earth from each of you, is absolute POSITIVE energy. Don't stall on me, I have to soar!"

Richard also passed this along to us in his last post; "******* Christ is my Lord and Savior. As my loving God and Lord has protected and guided me throughout my life, I pray he will do likewise for you and your family. May each of you achieve your dreams, and not be troubled by hardships. I pray for your good health. God will only give you as much load as you can bear, and never any more. Do not lose hope, nor certainly faith. Above all, do not fear evil, for though it surrounds us it can never hurt us. It may claim hollow victories, but it always suffers defeat."

We are proud to carry on Richard's undaunted support for his passion and his unstinting support of the user. Welcome to the Richard Harvey Memorial Fly Forums!

  3. I wonder if anyone would like me to try and upload my first attempt at terrascenery. It includes the tiles around Jackson Hole up to West Yellowstone (about 900MB).As yet I haven't been able to find any photos of the two airports to try and design them and the taxiways.Unfortunately, in the default runway at KWYS there is a tower almost in the middle of the runway and I haven't been able to shift it with the scenery editor. It does add something of a challenge to the landing though!:-wave

I just uploaded a version of the Sahara aircraft that simulates certain failures. It uses a DLL and a configration file to accomplish this. You can set components to fail during the takeoff roll, the intial climb, or the final approach. Or you can give it a mean time between failures number in which case it will randomly fail within that average period. It has a readme file containing the installation instruction and a short document describing the panel changes and how to set the configuration file. As I say in the document it is meant for system dweebs like me. If you just want to fly from place to place the base Sahara is what you want. Harry Gentilozzi

There is one observation that bothers me in some Flight Simulators:The autopilot does not manage to keep the localizer centered during ILS approaches under cross-wind conditions, I see this in X-Plane, MS-FS 2002 and FLYII (not in the final FLY2K, if I remember correctly). In real life, I only owe a PPL, and have never flown an ILS approach under cross -wind conditions, so I can't tell. But from all I know, the autopilot should apply rudder (-trim) to keep the needle centered, independent of any wind conditions. How can it be that all (or some) Flight Simulators use a wrong implementation?Or am I wrong? Thanks for any hint on that matter.Harald

I've decided to upload it, despite some estetic details that I am still working on. Please forgive me, but I want you to have fun just as I have been with this panel. It's also an opportunity for some of you to see how panel modifications are done and the files that are used to do so. this was my strategy which hopefully will lead me to designing new panels for FLY2. Roberto Vigetti has sent me his MD80 files for even a more realistic cockpit. In fact, I owe lots of thanks to those of you who have kindly e-mailed me and have gotten me out of some trouble. Please feel free to make suggestions: it will simply help see how you see this panel.tony

The last global tile render pack for the northern part of North Carolina will be uploaded shortly. With Rocky Mount joining Raleigh in the west and the Edenton tile to the east, you can fly TerraScenery from Knoxville, TN to Ktty Hawk, NC.Over beautiful John H. Kerr Reservoir - it runs from Virginia in the northwest down into North Carolina near Henderson. From it, the Roanoke River runs down into Roanoke Rapids Lake. http://forums.avsim.com/user_files/35264.jpg Other screenshots are available thru the links below.1. Over Rocky Mount Airport2. I flew on one of these yesterday. What an unusual A/C! It's a small jet with a capacity of about 70. It looks a little like a very small version of a Russian transport. The wing was over the top of the fuselage and it had a very large horizontal stabilizer for an A/C of its size. It also had four engines which I thought was really unusual for a commuter plane. I have to admit that it felt very smooth considering the stormy weather we were in. At first I thought it was an old plane but it had a very modern looking glass cockpit. Anyone know who builds it?

I have been enjoying my modified dc9 panel. As you can see, it does create a more 3d feel with respect to the original panel. Here's the dilemma, I've packaged it for upload so others can use it. The copyright issue is what I need advice on. I am aknowledging the author of the upper panel and those of the main panel, and emphasize that this is for personal use. What I have not done, however, is asked for their specific permission, simply because I am not in any way trying to profit or not aknowledging proper authorship. What are your opinions? I can upload it, or I can e-mail it to whomever asks for the zip file. I simply want to make my humble contribution to the hobby,…

I uploaded Liverpool Airport EGGP last night. The Airport and scenery are still the same, but I have included the Lighthouse in the pod, and renamed it to stop any "lighthousen" error. Deleate your old version of this Airport and get this version for trouble free flight :-) http://mysite.freeserve.com/fly2theuk/fly2...res/richard.jpgSteve.My United Kingdom Scenery.http://library.avsim.net/search.php?CatID=...&Go=Change+View

First off, I've always been a Fly! supporter, if only from the sidelines. I think it would have tremendous potential as a competitor to MSFS, but it's getting on in age now and visually not as appealing as other sims, except for the trademark beautiful panels. But there are no 3D panels, no 'auto-gen' scenery, and a significant lack of detailed airports (or airports with taxiways). Most of these are correctable, but not without a ton of tweaking. You have to be an addict of Fly! to use it anywhere near its potential... something I unfortunately don't have the time for, when I just want to hop in a Cessna and fly VFR around a random location.I know the project has been…

About two weeks ago, I was proud to have flown my first (real) GA flight out of Jefferson County Airport in Port Townsend, WA. (See related post at http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho...id=19420&page=) This weekend, I spent three days at my folk's summer home in Pittsfield, MA. Saturday morning was beautiful, and without lots of plans, I decided to head over to Lyon Aviation at PSF. A CFI, Joe, was available and happy to take me up for my second hour of flying ever in a Cessna 152. I spent just under an hour, according to the Hobbes (did I spell that right?). We did some slow flight, a few stalls, several 30-degree and two 45-degree turns (some definate G's in …

  19. Today (in about nine hours), I plan to take my first GA (real) flight. I have signed up with the local flight school for a one-hour Introductory Flight in a Cessna 150. I am out here west of Seattle, WA on a short vacation for a few days and with the beautiful weather and wonderful scenery, decided its time to get myself out of the PC cockpit and into a real one.I will try to take a picture or two, which I'll post at the end of the week when I return home to New York. But I don't presume I'll be photographing much given that the instructor told me I'll be flying the plane - he'll just be helping.I don't have Jefferson County International Airport (0S9) in my library. I ju…

Hello all,I have searched the postings on all Fly related forums with no hits. Curious if anyone ever made a Bendix/King RNAV to use in Fly!II. Commonly found in nicer GA singles and twins you would have a Comm radio, an RNAV and a Com/Nav below (Pre LORAN and GPS days). I am curious if it hasn't been done, could it?Zane
