Richard Harvey

Lake Tahoe

September, 2002

This forum and all others related to the FLY series of flight simulator, are dedicated to the memory of Richard Harvey - the lead designer for Terminal Reality's Fly.

At the AVSIM FANCON of 2002, Richard and his wife, Tara, attended. Richard was presented with AVSIM's Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the flight simulation genre and his outstanding service and support of the FS community. Richard was a friend to many of us, and never hesitated to assist and inspire. Richard passed away the following March, 2003. He is sorely missed by his friends and those that were privileged to know him.

Richard in his last post to the forums said; "Try to stay away from things that are dark, dreary, introspective, tear jerkers, etc. Think HAPPY -- be HAPPY. If that is too much to ask, then I'll change the word HAPPY to POSITIVE. That's the flow of feeling I want rolling through my soul as I depart this earth from each of you, is absolute POSITIVE energy. Don't stall on me, I have to soar!"

Richard also passed this along to us in his last post; "******* Christ is my Lord and Savior. As my loving God and Lord has protected and guided me throughout my life, I pray he will do likewise for you and your family. May each of you achieve your dreams, and not be troubled by hardships. I pray for your good health. God will only give you as much load as you can bear, and never any more. Do not lose hope, nor certainly faith. Above all, do not fear evil, for though it surrounds us it can never hurt us. It may claim hollow victories, but it always suffers defeat."

We are proud to carry on Richard's undaunted support for his passion and his unstinting support of the user. Welcome to the Richard Harvey Memorial Fly Forums!

Having just got this fine aeroplane working I flew from Jersey (EGJJ).I had some problems during the departure as I couldn't work out how the ADF display functions. The ORTAC 1A departure calls for a straight ahead climb with a right turn onto ALD NDB QDM 015. This foxed me as I couldn't get a bearing to ALD from the gauge as I can rotate the dial to any bearing I wish. Any clues as to what I should be doing here please?Andrew Luck18 miles SW EGSH

Hi all,I finally completed the data template file and I think it has enough flexibility now to place the models in a large range of possibilities : from fixed models position x,y allowed in a single texture grid to a repeated randomized position. We can now have grids with all the objects carefully placed according to roads and buildings or houses images and have generic and randomized grids coverage where position doesn't really matter. All the tests done until now are with textures higher than 64x64 : with this slots used, the rendering will be even greater...I didn't checked out yet the water pb that Tony reported ... I'll try now during other tests.Cheers,Laurent (rotw)…

Hi all,As all the things are pretty good so far ... I added night textures in the templates files and added a open-close autogen button in the UI plugin window ... that way one can toggle the feature as he (or she, eh, eh !) wants ... and let the dll in place even for non autogen flights. Now with Steve's model in 64x64 we should be able to prepare the templates with their fixed positions.BTW ScenGen editor can be handy for this part because it gives easily the x,y coordinates of an object related to a texture. 110604_AVSIM_AUTOGEN_TEST_V10.zipin http://rotw.simvol.org/beta/ don't miss the '/' after betaCheers,Laurenthttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/96621.gif

Hi.Instead of just collecting dust on my HD,I can share some of myoffshore models with you.I'm not a 3D modeler,so the quality is not the best, but can still be fun for helicopter flying.Mainly different size oilrigs,a liferaft and an onshore helo trolley foe landing the Bell.Just uploaded it to the F2fDesign site, but not sure when or if it's ready for download.Take careJanhttp://www.avsim.com/hangar/fly/dfdg/bannerjh.jpg

Hi all,I installed some priority flags in the data file in order to select which model will be affected by the autoHide feature (some are hidden and some are not within the autohide radius ini set) and which model are still visible above 15000 ft avoiding all the rendering work and poly count for models quite invisible at hight alt. With this 2 flags we can set the rendering distance of the tiles templates adding some extra fps when possible. Also : Do you remember the popBuildingIntoView ini settings with fly!1 ? Well, here we can do the same (a note is included in the zip)and add a lot of fps with the low end PC like mines ...110204_AVSIM_AUTOGEN_TEST_V10.zip always in :i…

Thanks guys for all the thoughts and best wishes to me after my fall. Im still hobbling along and it takes me 5 minutes just to get downstairs. Things are getting better though. Well after a lot of messing around with my computer it has died on me. So Im getting a new one after I return from Florida in December. My wife is letting me try my creating on her laptop which is very slow and only just loads Fly2.But thats all I need for now, I was able to create more Autogen Trees today, though it takes 3 times as long. So, between my wife working on the computer we will still have some advance in the models for the new Autogen, but a lot more slower. So as Giorgio said, more mo…

Hi all,Waiting for Steve's new computer ... I put together old models (NYC_v1DA.pod) and new Steve's ones (modified in 64x64 textures) even though they aren't mixed transparent assembled sheets as we talked before for trees... but the fps are quite good nevertheless... see the picture in the KOAK area !I made some improvements with the tiles data file which now gives enough flexibility for objects positions : I mixed fixed positions and randomized position in order to have some kind of diversity even with the repetition of template tiles. 110104_AVSIM_AUTOGEN_TEST_V10.zipin http://rotw.simvol.org/beta/ don't miss the '/' after betaCheers,Laurent (rotw)

Hi all,I put together 3 programs and I obtained a very basic voice command utility that can be used with fly!http://rotw.simvol.org/beta/ (dont miss the last '/')102004_AVSIM_VOICE_COMMAND_TEST_V10.zipThe design goals were simple : change fly! internals and externals views with UP-DOWN-LEFT-RIGHT voice commands. In fact the program triggers keystrokes at command, then you can easily imagine that "UP" does a Ctrl+up_arrow command ... etcDue to my bad english spell and a very old microphone, I'm not sure if the test works or not and even if it deserves to be developped or not (it changes views but I do need to say UP ... UP ... UP and UP until something appens !)Also for p…

Hi all,I prepared the data file which should contain all the texture data settings used by the dll and that allows to manage which objects we want onto the tiles. This file was needed to let our artists modelers test their object easier.I installed a new feature that sets the camera zoom ratio with autogen dll (in the fly.ini) : having increased my zoom ratio I also have increased my fps. Finally I fill in some textures in the configure file in order to test the result and let one see how to prepare the scripts. I used NYC_v1DA.pod from the library because, even if buildings are not the type we want to use (mainly slot 64) they were a good example of the result we should o…

Ken Salter has written a utility called FSAUToSTart which rmporarily disables all background tasks in windows and loads flight simulator. This little gem not only frees more memory, but also removes all those programs that can cause crashes to the desktop. When you're finished flying, the background tasks are activated again. It's automatic and it's a beauty.tony

In Microsoft Flight Simulator Insider, Rod Machado writes:"Under normal conditions, the engine's manifold pressure can't rise above atmospheric pressure".Assume a take-off runway at sea level and ISA standard conditions.Manifold pressure in a parked DC-3 on that runway will indicate 30 inches Hg (rounded off). Now, taking off this DC-3 from that runway, applying take-off power, the MP gauge indicates 48"Hg. So it rises +18"Hg above the actual atmospheric pressure! Thanks for any explanation.Stupido.

Hi all,The question is : which direction shall we take next ? I mean, when we'll have many objects to display, what kind of autogen do you want ? An o'matic that do all the settings by himself, letting pilots just concerned by flight process, or do you want an autogen with many setting to play with, as map objects, types, position, relations, geographic variations, etcThe respponse will be useful for the next development : do I need to install a parser or do I need to think about algorithms ?Cheers,Laurent (rotw)http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/94844.gif

Hi all,I integrated Steve's new fall trees and added a "fog" feature that reduces the visibility during the trying process of keeping with the 15 fps rate.In the lower left message box the last two figures indicates whether or not the fog is enabled and the visibility distance. You can press many times the fog button if needed. I suggest to adjust first other features then use fog feature as the last friendly fps resort.http://rotw.simvol.org/beta/ project_AUTOGEN/4_TEST_FOG/101804_AVSIM_AUTOGEN_TEST_V10.zipCheers,laurent (rotw)
