The FLY General Discussion Forum
The General Discussion forum for the TRI series of FLY Simulators.
| Richard Harvey Lake Tahoe September, 2002 | This forum and all others related to the FLY series of flight simulator, are dedicated to the memory of Richard Harvey - the lead designer for Terminal Reality's Fly.
At the AVSIM FANCON of 2002, Richard and his wife, Tara, attended. Richard was presented with AVSIM's Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the flight simulation genre and his outstanding service and support of the FS community. Richard was a friend to many of us, and never hesitated to assist and inspire. Richard passed away the following March, 2003. He is sorely missed by his friends and those that were privileged to know him.
Richard in his last post to the forums said; "Try to stay away from things that are dark, dreary, introspective, tear jerkers, etc. Think HAPPY -- be HAPPY. If that is too much to ask, then I'll change the word HAPPY to POSITIVE. That's the flow of feeling I want rolling through my soul as I depart this earth from each of you, is absolute POSITIVE energy. Don't stall on me, I have to soar!"
Richard also passed this along to us in his last post; "******* Christ is my Lord and Savior. As my loving God and Lord has protected and guided me throughout my life, I pray he will do likewise for you and your family. May each of you achieve your dreams, and not be troubled by hardships. I pray for your good health. God will only give you as much load as you can bear, and never any more. Do not lose hope, nor certainly faith. Above all, do not fear evil, for though it surrounds us it can never hurt us. It may claim hollow victories, but it always suffers defeat."
We are proud to carry on Richard's undaunted support for his passion and his unstinting support of the user. Welcome to the Richard Harvey Memorial Fly Forums! |

I started in the flightsim hobby way back with the Sublogic simulator on the TRS-80 model 1, flying around that little grid with 128x48 monochrome character mapped graphics, and moved though the years up to modern sims such as FU3, FlyII and FS2002 (haven't upgraded to later ones in the MS series yet).It seems like for a while, there was some healthy competition in civilian sims. You had the Flight Unlimited series, Fly and Fly2, Microsoft, and to a smaller extent X-plane and some others. Before that you had various sims on the Amiga, the Atari ST, and Mac.These days it seems more and more like it's a one-dog show outside of military sims. The FU1/2/3 series is no long…

Hi All,There seems to be a lot of discussion lately regarding elevation meshes.I've been working on a program for a while now that should help :-)I guess this might be a good time to announce it.The program is called Fly!Mesh and will be available soon. There are still features that I want to add but it is quite usable now. Here's a link to a Word document about it if anyone is interested. In the document, which isn't very detailed, I mention other tutorials. The most useful one that I've found on terrain topics is by Nick Curcio.I had his permission some time back to put it on my site. Here's the link. [link:www.avsim.com/hangar/fly/colins2/tutorials/TrnTut.zip]Terrain Tutori…

Hello everyone and happy holidays! Well it is that time of year, friends, family, love, peace and joy, as well as being thankful for what we have. This time of year I can not help but think about a great man and the gifts that he gave us, Richard Harvey. For me Fly! is really the smallest gift he gave as there were so many words of wisdom, the way he treated people, just knowing someone like him was a gift. To think of the joy that he brought to how many people and I am sure that many people learned much from him. So during this season I think that maybe we should give a thought to him and his family, maybe share a thought about what he meant to you. A person that gives o…

G'day all,I've just uploaded 5 Sydney bridges to the Fly! IImiscellaneous files section in the Avsim library. Allow time for them to be processed by the Library. These bridges were my very first attempt at 3D modelling so they are pretty basic but at anything over a few hundred feet all detail would be lost anyway. There are only about three textures per bridge, and they aren't mapped, so altering the textures in the tif's is an absolute breeze if you don't like the dark textures in the uploaded models. Any paint program that can handle a *.tif image is all you need.If you want to scale a particular bridge to fit a spot in a bit of scenery of yours then email me and I'll …

I haven't been able to fly for some time, due to a difficult work schedule, but I finally got the chance and decided to download some of Wayne's new terrific airport add-ons to add to the experience. My word, Wayne, you have been prolific! :-)One of the first I downloaded was his scenery for Houghton County Memorial Airport in the far north of Michigan. The metar showed limited visibility, high winds, and snow flurries so I planned to shoot the ILS Rwy 31 approach. Guess what...the approach is missing from Fly!II! So, I made the approach and have just uploaded it to the Avsim library - it should be available soon. This should also allow you to shoot the LOC/DME Rwy 13 Bac…

Hi Wayne, I would like to say a great big Thankyou for populating our FLY!! world in the USA & now Canada. I would like to request that if you can populate the prairies of Canada, in particular CYYC. Also on my wish list is CYEG, CYXE, CYQR & CYWG, also as a stepping stone to the UK, St Johns Int. Newfoundland CYYT.I have got the Airport layout maps from Adacel Inc. & I have been trying to get some pictures of Calgary, CYYC but have not come up with anything as yet. I can send you the layout maps if it would help. I know this is a tall order but if you could fit them in to your future plans I would be most grateful. If I can do anything to help my email address…

Dear fellow Fly!ers,(I posted this again and separately to make sure that you don't miss it)I see that 107 people have read this message. Let's suppose that there are duplicates, do you like 50%? That leaves us with roughly 53 or 54 people, our of which only 9 took the time to respond to the survey. How much of your time does it take? Maybe a minute? After all the time and dedication that Wayne has put into the hundreds of airports that he has created, doesn't he deserve a minute of your time to give him some input or to just say "Thanks Wayne"? We all talk about keeping Fly! alive but it's this kind of reactions (or lack thereof) that really makes me wonder if this is po…

I will be gone for several weeks until the first week of January 2005. My family and I will be flying to Tanzania to visit our son and do some safari adventures. I was hoping to have the Electra out, but the emb120 diverted me from that goal. It's tiring working on the same aircraft, so the emb got me working on 3d modeling and other fun stuff. Enjoy the holidays and may FLY be with you.;-)tony

Can someone tell me if it is just my machine or is it the way Fly! II happens to be ..... when I make gradual pitch changes the movement of the instrument panel against the horizon is very smooth and precise. However, my attitude indicator moves in small jerky increments of about 2-3 degrees. For flying a precise glide path it would be nice if the indicator movement was just a smooth as the horizon. Mostly I fly the Sahara or the Navajo. Does anyone else have the same problem ... can anything be done to correct this?

I would just like to say See ya! to all of you, and my friends at F2FDesign, and all those that keep in touch with me.Take care and keep up the good work.Going on one of these two, but not sure until tonight. Both are used by the same company.
