Richard Harvey

Lake Tahoe

September, 2002

This forum and all others related to the FLY series of flight simulator, are dedicated to the memory of Richard Harvey - the lead designer for Terminal Reality's Fly.

At the AVSIM FANCON of 2002, Richard and his wife, Tara, attended. Richard was presented with AVSIM's Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the flight simulation genre and his outstanding service and support of the FS community. Richard was a friend to many of us, and never hesitated to assist and inspire. Richard passed away the following March, 2003. He is sorely missed by his friends and those that were privileged to know him.

Richard in his last post to the forums said; "Try to stay away from things that are dark, dreary, introspective, tear jerkers, etc. Think HAPPY -- be HAPPY. If that is too much to ask, then I'll change the word HAPPY to POSITIVE. That's the flow of feeling I want rolling through my soul as I depart this earth from each of you, is absolute POSITIVE energy. Don't stall on me, I have to soar!"

Richard also passed this along to us in his last post; "******* Christ is my Lord and Savior. As my loving God and Lord has protected and guided me throughout my life, I pray he will do likewise for you and your family. May each of you achieve your dreams, and not be troubled by hardships. I pray for your good health. God will only give you as much load as you can bear, and never any more. Do not lose hope, nor certainly faith. Above all, do not fear evil, for though it surrounds us it can never hurt us. It may claim hollow victories, but it always suffers defeat."

We are proud to carry on Richard's undaunted support for his passion and his unstinting support of the user. Welcome to the Richard Harvey Memorial Fly Forums!

First, make sure that the add on scenery is in the fs2002 add-on folder.Second, give it a namethird, find an area, usually the last one, in the scenery.cfg, and add two simple lines: the name of the airport in the "title" heading, and the location of the scenery in the fs2002 folder. fourth, make sure that the 'area'number in the scenery.cfg is the same number that you enter in the fsimport 'area' field. Then, simply press the "generate" button , and the rest will take care of itself. Here's the airport of Burlington, VT. It's simply beautiful. I hope we can find a way to convert default scenries, though. It would be even easier. Here's what I have in the fs2002 scenery.cf…

Padraic,How difficult would it be to have FS Imports create *.epds with scf files so the scenery could be stored in the scenery folder instead of the shared folder? Some scenery areas are quite large and with all of them loading into Fly II at startup there will probably be some performance issues developing as the library in the shared folder grows. I have tried writing a *.scf file for some converted .epds but I've not been able to get them to load so I must be missing something. Question 2. FS Imports appears to leave the *.act and *.raw files for the last area converted in the art folder. If I was to create a TS2 area for the same globe tile that I just converted and …

Hi, everyone. Please can anyone tell me if the Fly!2 map packs are available todownload from anywhere other than Fileplanet.com?I can't find them here on Avsim or any of the other links and I object to being virtually forced into paying a subscription to Fileplanet to be allowed the privilege of getting them from there.Maybe they bought out the rights or something? :((Regards, Ravenswing.

The thread on FSimport was evolving into an interesting topic on copyright use. Since that thread was getting lengthy I thought I would move that topic out on it's own. Would there be a copyright infringement if FS Imports converted FS default scenery? The courts have been somewhat balanced on the issue of personal use of copyrighted material. Padraic's program only allows the converted scenery of freeware developers to be used on the single PC. What if it would allow default scenery to be converted or used only if both FS2002 and Fly II were installed on the same PC to be used only on that PC? In one sense the functionality of FS Imports is similiar to Music Match or Me…

G'Day!Why is my Fly!2K "stuttering" again? Exspecially during the night and the sunset.I have an Athlon 1600 XP, 320MB RAM and a Geforce2 MX 32MB graphiccard.Should I push up the RAM-memory or should I buy a new graphiccard - maybe a geforce4 128MB?During the day its no problem to fly "liquid". But it's also "unfunny" to set all detail options to off.

This happens whyle flying with Fly!2K.When my view shows the panel(any aircrafts)suddenly, the view changes to lateral, or pedestal etc. I have to constantly return manually to the central panel. Very boring when flying. The same will happen if I find myself with an outer view. The image will be replaced by another plane position. I am wondering if this could not come from my VGA card ><< latest driver?:-( I have not the problem with Fly!2.My OS is Win XP Pro and the VGA card is a GeForce3 TI200. The driver installed is a Nvidia 41.03 and the directx version is 8.1I like better to keep flying on Fly!2K.Has anybody any idea how to fix this? Perhaps change the driv…

What does one write at a time of sad news about Rich Harvey's health? Probably the memories and personal experiences of meeting the man whom I for one admire. It was his Fly! simulator back in 1999 that inspired me, and many others like Jak Fearon, Todd Klaus, Rob Young to devote hours of our time, and ultimately years of our lives in the pursuit of something more than just a game. It was the dream. The dream to fly, and possibly escape the more mundane aspects of our lives. Fly! gave us a world that we could create.I was in two minds over visiting and presenting at the Avsim conference in Lake Tahoe this year, simply because it was such a long way away from Australia. Wh…

Hi there,I am not able to upload the 86MB Enzv2 scenery to Avsim. I was told to contact my ISP, and that is more difficult that asking to speak to the President. Believe it or not, by a miracle I got through to my ISP, and they tell me there`s nothing they can do about it, which I believe is pure #####. (Sorry about my language!) OK enough of that.Meanwhile, you can download the complete scenery here in Norway:http://www.flightsim.no/cgi-bin/file/download.cgi?ID=2426Man, are we still in the stone-age!

Let's get a petition going so that we may persuade TRI( just a few nice people--not a big corporation--to help fullfill Richards dream: to let FLY live as an open source Flight sim. FLY is no longer a program. It's Richard and his wish to let FLY live among all of us simmers. There's an irony in here, but, damn it, I am angry as hell that such a great guy as Richard cannot receive his life long wish. Please forgive for my strong tone, but I hope you understand and get a petition, organized by Tom Allensworth, going as soon as possible. Let the dream go on. Let TRI say thanks to Richard. tony

I can convert Simflyers EWR to Fly II but for the life of me I cannot get it to convert DFW. Has anybody successfully converted any other Simflyer airports? If your not familiar with Simfyers they make outstanding airports for FS2002. They are frame rate killers but beautiful in their detail. I would consider buying more for Fly II but if I can't convert them I would hesitate to purchase them just for FS2002.

I was thinking - let's all contribute to everyone's enjoyment of Fly! by telling all what their favorite VFR ground scenery is. On top of that, maybe some TerraModels developers can work up all the airports in the selected areas, greatly enhancing the flying experience. My personal favorites include the Colorado Rocky Mountains, Salt Lake City and surrounding area, and the Grand Canyon in the Western US. In Europe, I love flying in the Swiss Alps, and thanks to both ROTW and Danny Mason, there are also wonderful airports to land at --- some in the Alps that are particularly challenging.Contributions please....-DK----David KohlFly! Hi there,my brandnew fly! refuses to start , well it displays the interface, I can check my fuel and weight and it goes into the flightplanner and does more preflight tasks , but the moment I press the button "Fly" the simulation try to load airplane/airports and scenery for a short seconds and than it crashes, or it goes back to the desktop. If I use the autoselection for video cards , I have a Voodoo5 64MB, some 3DFx voodoo card is selected , interface is working but after pressing the button "fly", I get a little error window : TRIGlide -> and back it goes to the desktop.
