The FLY General Discussion Forum
The General Discussion forum for the TRI series of FLY Simulators.
| Richard Harvey Lake Tahoe September, 2002 | This forum and all others related to the FLY series of flight simulator, are dedicated to the memory of Richard Harvey - the lead designer for Terminal Reality's Fly.
At the AVSIM FANCON of 2002, Richard and his wife, Tara, attended. Richard was presented with AVSIM's Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the flight simulation genre and his outstanding service and support of the FS community. Richard was a friend to many of us, and never hesitated to assist and inspire. Richard passed away the following March, 2003. He is sorely missed by his friends and those that were privileged to know him.
Richard in his last post to the forums said; "Try to stay away from things that are dark, dreary, introspective, tear jerkers, etc. Think HAPPY -- be HAPPY. If that is too much to ask, then I'll change the word HAPPY to POSITIVE. That's the flow of feeling I want rolling through my soul as I depart this earth from each of you, is absolute POSITIVE energy. Don't stall on me, I have to soar!"
Richard also passed this along to us in his last post; "******* Christ is my Lord and Savior. As my loving God and Lord has protected and guided me throughout my life, I pray he will do likewise for you and your family. May each of you achieve your dreams, and not be troubled by hardships. I pray for your good health. God will only give you as much load as you can bear, and never any more. Do not lose hope, nor certainly faith. Above all, do not fear evil, for though it surrounds us it can never hurt us. It may claim hollow victories, but it always suffers defeat."
We are proud to carry on Richard's undaunted support for his passion and his unstinting support of the user. Welcome to the Richard Harvey Memorial Fly Forums! |

Is there something wrong with the File Library? For two days now, I have made attempts to download "VolEdit v1.1" from the FLY!II-Miscelaneous Library without success!! I keep getting a message that the "page can not be displayed"! Refresh does not solve the problem!Curtis

Through the ideas of a couple of Fly!2 Community members, I've stumbled on a new technique for creating photorealistic scenery. I have to give credit to DonB for the idea to use the free USAPhotomaps software to download satellite imagery for any area in the United States (http://jdmcox.com). It works great and it is the easiest way to find US satellite imagery that I've found so far. I also have to credit Pascal for the idea to use Terrascene generated imagery to "colorize" the black and white satellite image. The result is a nice satellite image that you can send back to Terrascene for rendering and slicing easily into new Fly!2 scenery. Here are some screenshots o…

I want to install Terramodels 2 on another machine, but I can't install Fly!II. It's a company computer and they have a strict policy with no games. So, what directories does Terramodels need from a typical Fly!II installation? I figured that its needs the "data" and airport.dat files as well as the taxiway files. What else? Would it be feasable to just copy the entire Terramodels install folder to a cd along with the needed Fly!II folders/files, stick it in the other computer and copy everything off?Anyone tried this?Pieter

HiI have started to practice flying the helicopter in Fly! II. It is very difficult comparing with airplanes but very fun. My question is where can I find a complete checklist for the helicopter. It is not so realistic to hit the "E" button to start the engine.

Hi everybody,First today I was able to upload my ENZV Terrascenery here. I had no luck uploading the complete pod file. Obviously big uploads like mine is working fine within the USA, but not across the Atlantic! So I uploaded my scenery as a Terrascene "Do it yourself-kit".And this is the only way I will upload my sceneries from now on.A finished globe tile is just too big, also two quarter tiles is almost 100MB. The kit is only 2.6MB.....easy to upload, easy to download, and saves Avsim a lot of space in the library. Hope more of you will use this method for Terrascenery. Some of you would protest because you have to install Terrascene in order to get the scenery, but t…

I've been noticing in some of the screenshots of Fly! II that included in the airport in the background are static aircraft. What I'd like to know is where does one find these? I would also like to know how hard is it to create specific airport scenery, i.e. jetways, specific buildings, etc. (A good example of this is when Pete Sterling posted his ANA777s and in each picture you see an airport with multiple JAL747s in the background). To my knowledge, the only static aircraft available is the NW727. I've tried looking through the library and maybe I'm nasally blind (can't see what's under my nose) and if that's the case, I'd be more than happy to have someone point t…

After successfully converting a few fs addons, I realized what an untapped potential FSI is for FLY. I fear, however, that unless it can convert(legally) fs default scenery, the add on option will simply not be enough. It's almost impossible finding add ons that are comparable to default scenenery in specific airports that may be of interest to a user. I have spent countless ours searching for possible airports as add ons, but in the end it's almost a hit and miss as to what can be found. I truly believe that a FSI that is used for personal use only and requires having to havefs2002 or 2000 in his pc offers no legal risks to the author, especially when one considers th…

I converted two airports successfully. When in FLY, however, if I go into the scenery editor ( ctl-e), the fsi generated scenery fails to appear. When I exit the editor, the scenery no longer appears and the dll( ALT-F7) fails to show the text on the bottom of the screen. In sum, the fsi converted scenery will no longer show up if the scenery editor is accessed.tony

I am working on a scenery with terrascene and everything worked fine for the first two quarters of the global tile. I made my tga's, done a little photoshop painting and sliced them into FlyII. But now something seemed to be wrong. I make my tga's, do a little photoshop painting and slice them into FLYII (with terrascene). Then I delete the files in the data folder (they are all in the pod file) and with these files my scenery disappeares. The pod-file is in the scenery folder but fly don't read it, so it's impossible to fill the global tile.Thank you for your help,Frank

As you'll have read Paul asked me to upload his 'UK North West' photo scenery. It will be all 4 parts if we can get the big 234Meg 'North Wales' through!Jeff Atkins reports (see post 'UK Birmingham FS Show') that he'd downloaded 1 part but had a 'couldn't find ..texture' message.I had all 4 in my PC and they tested OK, but Paul has just mentioned to me that the files overlap and don't seem to appear seperately.I think this would be because of the way Fly! 'pod's' everything in your data directory (relevant or not) when creating a new pod, or because Fly! usually doesn't cope with overlaps. That was explained a while ago by Todd (before he took up 'real flying fulltime'!).…

Is it possible to use Fly2 with a 128MB ATI Radeon 9700 Pro?I picked up a copy of Fly2 in a shovelware pack with 4 other flight games for $9.95. I installed it and the screen pretty much just flickers... oh I can see a Skyhawk rotating amoungst the flickers... but it is not usable. I downloaded a bunch of patches... I think I got all the right ones... installed them... in the right order (I think)... tried it after each patch... always the same... except there are more aircraft on the list.Is there a fix for this? If not I guess I haven't lost much... $9.95 / 5 = $1.99 Can you give me any hope on this? Thanks for any help. :-sun1

One more time the b734 main bitmap panel by Dreamfleet is been used by people to build a new panel. The file name is americawest_b737-200.zip and the autor is Scot Heinz. The file is in Avsim library. There is no more respect to the payware projects.Justa - Brazil

I had a problem Friday evening with framerates. I've converted Glasgow (EGPF) and was planning to fly there from ENCN. However, at ENCN I had a very erratic frame rate that was spending a lot of time at 4-6fps when usually I see at least 12 here. Removing the FS Import DLL fixed the problem.Has anyone else seen this?Andrew Luck18 miles SW EGSH

I recently purcased FLY! II on the web and expect it to arrive any day now. I am anxious to load it onto my P4 2.0Ghz; 512Ram; 80Gb; 128mb GeForce 4 machine. I am anxious to know what I need to download in order to get things going such as scenery. I understand that the scenery is not as abundant in FlyII as in FS2K2. I am aware of the full patch download I will need to get first thing. 1)Does Fly! II offer virtual cockpits? If not, in your opinion, how do you like the panels/views in Fly! II (if possible compared to FS2K2)?2)How much default scenery can I expect out of the box? Can I fly from say KDFW to KBTR (Baton Rouge, LA)? 3)Where do I find high quality t…
