  1. hello,I thought this documentary which Premiered today on the discovery channel in many countries was excellent, you can really tell a lot of time, effort, and money was put into this documentary. Definitely the best documentary I have ever seen. You can tell the difference between a half ___ documentary and a well made quality one. :-) This was a great documentary everyone should see this one as there are going to be a lot of encore presentations. Im curious, if you have already seen it, what did you think of it?Andrew

Having read the "lame excuse" thread I felt compelled to address another issue but did not want to go off topic in that thread. I want to address the quality of payware products vs. that of freeware, and, hence, why the substantial payware market exists. Quite simply, payware has usually been professionally designed and adequately tested, while freeware seems to suffer from a lack thereof. This post will discuss freeware authors who feel compelled to release files that have obviously withstood minimal beta testing. Please do not get me wrong. I like freeware (for obvious reasons) and I have minimal payware because I think the default MS aircraft and available quality free…

Hey gang,I started wondering on my recent trip about the beacon and strobe lights on airplanes (and the nav lights too, for that matter): Has the idea ever been brought up of using LEDs for the lights rather than conventional bulbs?I know that most towns in the US are starting to use LEDs for the traffic lights, and they seem to provide a clear, strong light. Then again, I don't know that much about them, so maybe they wouldn't be good for an aeronautical application anyways.

Just saw this interesting piece of technology on Future Fighting Machines just now and I thought I'd share it with everyone. Its call "Metal Storm". A company in Brisbane, Austrailia has been developing systems that fire ONE MILLION!!! projectiles a minute. It involves no using electricity to fire these weapons, like a rail gun. It can be fitted with grenades, cameras, shells, almost anything that can be shot out of cannon. The launchers look like the VLS tubes on US Navy crusiers and destroyers, but there are as much as 10-20 projectiles in one tube, each one firing by a burst of electricity. Also they are making pistols out of the same technology. It would be like 10 ro…

I know there are several folks on here who work for Delta, Northwest, United, and so on, so maybe they can answer my question. What I'm wondering about is, essentially, a typical pilot's schedule on (let's say) a weekly/monthly basis. How many days on duty in a row? How many days off in a row? How many flights per day? What would be a typical "trip" in terms of destinations? For example, at my VA lately I've been flying the A319 and A320 out of LAX. My last flight left LAX at 7:10 Pacific, landed at DFW at 11:51 Central (so 2 hrs 41 min gate to gate), took off from DFW at 13:00, landed in Memphis at 14:10 (1 hr 10 min gate to gate). At that point, for a typical Airbus…

Sad to see the front page today announcing the long standing FSUIPC is becoming payware. (You knew this post was coming didn't you) I must send a sincre thanks to Pete for all his hard work in the past, and I look forward to even better things in the future from him. There comes a point in any hobby that things change and not always the way we would like them to. For the serious simmer we knew that this was going to happen at some time. I feel that we were on borrowed time with Pete's stuff, for some time now. In this particular case I can see only good coming out of it. For the "general" simmer this is not a big deal. Open the box, slip in the disk, fly the plane, somewha…

  19. Hey all,I'm a simmer and generally do very well. But every now and then I botch a landing by landing at an angle to direction of flight, hit hard, screech and swerve etc etc. I figured the sim was very forgiving and I just planned to do better next time. I figured if it was real life I'd be out of a job.Anyway, I was visiting www.airliners.net (now the source of all my desktops!) and I discovered quite a few photos of bad landings (not crashes). So some questions I have are in real life about commerical flying:How common are less than perfect landings? Are bad landings really that evident to the pax? Or does a bad looking landing not really feel like much? What are the…

I don't know why it surprises me. There 1000's, if not hundreds of thousands of aircraft flying each day. But just to see it in print of how many crash or have trouble each day, well, it puts a whole new light on things.Check it the last 10 days:http://www1.faa.gov/avr/aai/iirform.htm#datatableMore, goes way back to 1962:http://www.ntsb.gov/ntsb/month.asp[div align=center][link:www.jetdoc.com/STO/]Visit The Bookstore & Gift Shoppe][/b

Hi,I was wondering if anyone could possibly help me with information on flap extension / retraction schedules in relation to VRef.I know that, for example, a Boeing 767-300ER has the following flap retraction schedule:Flap 15 to 5 - VRef+40Flap 5 to 1 - VRef+60Flap 1 to 0 - VREf+80and I also know how the reverse works for calculating flap speeds for landing. Can anybody please supply me with this information for the following aircraft:BAe 146-200Boeing 717-200Boeing 757-200Boeing 767-200ERBoeing 777-300Dash 8MD82I would be very grateful for any help on this as I have searched the web and just cannot find it, but I guess it has to be out there somewhere. Many thanks,Steve.
