Hangar Chat

This forum is for the discussion of things you might discuss when going into an airport hangar.  Please make sure that your topic isn't covered in another forum before posting here.  Please refrain from controversial topics...politics, religion, conspiracy theories, climate change, COVID etc.  Topics that elicit or are deemed by staff likely to elicit heated argument, contention, or otherwise objectionable banter will be removed from view.  We allow some latitude, but please remember that, first and foremost, this is a flight-simulator oriented site frequented by people from all walks of life.

I would like to recognize and commend the people who make up the staff, membership, and visitors of the AVSIM community for their civility, humanity, and direct appreciation of our fellow man in the manner in which the recent elections have been, essentially, ignored here. And that is as it should be.On some if not most forums for other applications this past election has been a bitter and sometimes verbally violent affair with all manner of blistering, seething attacks on personal integrity and, if it were possible, personal being you can be sure. The simming community, especially the AVSIM fellowship, have stuck to their purpose, respected the privacy and integrity of ot…

The BBC reported today the following:"United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan says the war against international terrorism can be legitimate only if approved by the Security Council. Mr Annan told the BBC that "when one is trying to deal with a broader threat to international peace and security, there is no alternative but to go through the [uN] Council". The article went on to say:"The UN Secretary General acknowledged that the UN Charter gave individual countries the right to self-defence. "But, to contain the terrorists, I submit that you need that essential international co-operation to make it effective," Mr Annan said in the BBC interview."With REASONED and MATU…

Hi there evry1 - i'm a student at loughborough university currently doing a group project in which we have to design a wing in ground effect craft. (ground effect is a phenomenon whereby a wing flying very close to the ground produces less drag and more lift, just for those of you not familiar with the term!! for an example just search for "the wig page" on google and check out some pics). It is common for these types of craft to take off and land on water, and hence the 'fuselage' must act as a hull.Since the craft produces less drag and more lift, the thrust required at cruise can be as low as 30% of an equivalent aircraft flying out of ground effect. This low thrus…

Well AVSIM, now you've gone and done it! I fear you may have opened a can of worms by becoming a clearing house for piracy reports. I can just imagine the cracker wars as one side rats on the other.I commend the AVSIM staff on a noble effort. Piracy does indeed hurt the community, but it's not just the flightsimers. Piracy is a problem for the entire software industry, and its a massive quagmire that I wish AVSIM would stay away from.AVSIM has had the reputation of being so neutral and unbiased. I mean, you don't affiliate yourself with a certain political philosophy, so why go and toss your hat in with the Piracy Police? Obviously I agree with you in principal, but I fee…
