With the recent crash involving Dick Ebersol and his family a question has been raised in my mind. Please realize that I have no REAL flight experience, so for you RW pilots please keep this in mind before the flaming begins. In the initial reports, an airport spokesman mentioned that it's the pilots decision to deice or not. My question is, not to lay blame at the pilot's feet, but why is deicing not required when certain weather conditions exist? If I drive into the mountains, often I am told to either put on chains or have approved snow tires. These are not "guidelines" but requirements for me to continue to travel down the road. These requirements are in place because…

I'm just the messenger! If it is what you want, I hope you enjoy it.Best!Gavin

Hope this upsets most of you as it did me this morning..Jan 10, 2005 the Discovery channel will change their "Wings" channel over to "Military channel" and that's not "Military WINGS" just Military. (I'm sure there will be some military aviation shown)JUST at the time when the FAA introduces new ways to get people into GA and Sport flying they do something like this... remove the only real source of civil aviation programming for the masses.I contacted the Discovery Channel and also my local flying clubsto voice my displeasure.....If you every enjoy watching civil aviation programs on the "Wings" channel, you might want to contact Discovery channel and your own local cl…

Hi there,A friend of mine is creating a 3d-movie and there is some flying action in an Apache helicopter in this movie, too. To make it as realistic as possible he decided to add some communication between the heli pilots and a controller. Now he is looking for soundfiles he can download that give the whole scene a more realistic touch.I'd like to help him a little and thought that you guys in this board might know where to find such soundfiles.Cheers,Robert

I came across these a few minutes ago- some time-lapse videos from the South Pole. The one on the left is my favorite- lots of atmospheric phenomena to be seen :)http://www.cmdl.noaa.gov//gallery/south_pole_movies

I am in the middle of finalizing a DVD production and I made a copy to take home for my DVD player and although I can see a wonderful picture on the TV, I have no sound. This disk sounded fine on my Dad's DVD player/TV after we made the copy. Any ideas why? DVD media is -R.Thanks,Eric Twww.freewebs.com/FlightLevel180/

Looking at the tail of the DC-10 got me wondering. The number two engine seems to take away a lot of rudder surface area. In other words, it appears smaller than if the aircraft were to be designed as a two engined plane. Does the DC-10 have reduced rudder authority compared to planes of similar size/weight?Thanks in advance!Mike Brown

Hi, Here in the states it has been all over the news about the plane crash in Colorado that has taken the life of Mr.Ebersols young son. From published reports they are sayingthat the pilot chose not to de-ice tha plane. There was a snowstorm that day. They say it is left up to the pilot to de-ice. What do you think? S.

Just thought y'all might enjoy.Robert JOK all you pros get an eye full of this!! Who needs a 150' or 200' wide strip? Actual shots are from a fairly impressive landing operation. One of SAA's first B-747s retiring to Rand Airport, South Africa (elevation 5568 feet with 4898 long x 50 feet wide runway!) The 747-100 outer-to-outer main gear tire width is 41.33 ft. Empty aircraft Vref was 115 kts! Right on the center line. An inch is as good as a mile. Nice work.

I don't think I'm overreacting to this news and I hope this thread isn't locked for being slightly political, but this is really the first instance post 9/11 that I can think of where I've really truly felt that the goverment is doing something in the name of "protecting me" that is actually taking away my rights. The people of this country own the airway system, not someone in the Defense Department who just arbitrarily decided that it was a security risk to publish navaid and terminal procedure info to the public. As taxpayers, we pay for the creation of such data - it is our right to access it just as much as it is the Pentagon's.QUOTE:This action is taken to accomplis…

Would could be the reason, that the 2 throttle levers are at different positions? Also one pair of engine gauges (3rd from the bottom) does not show identical values.http://www.airliners.net/open.file?id=713948Wolfgang

There goes yet another one of our tax-funded liberties. Some would say this is merely a conspiracy theory, but I think it's more like the frog in the frying pan theory. Keep the flame up just enough so they don't know it's getting hot. By the time the soles of your shoes melt, it's too late. The reality is that DAFIF will always be in production... The problem is that the Government will sell it to the private industry, so now we'll pay with our tax money on the backside so the Government can profit again on the front-side. Write your Representative:http://www.house.gov/writerep/The deadline is set approproately as well. It's just far enough in the future so we'll all forge…

As mentioned on the front page at AVSIM, the DOD is making it much more difficult for general public to access the DOD database for aviation and other such navigation.Understandable from a defensive point of view, especially in light of the current times. But what about 3rd party offerings? Is Jeppesen going to be told what to print, and what not to print? In my mind, the AVSIM community is not adversely affected, as since we all have simulation in mind when we visit AVSIM, and therefore, a static DB of Oct 1, 2005 NAV Data is acceptable.Again, what comes to mind for me is the question around 3rd party providers.Cheers,bt

Recently, I uploaded Autoland 2004 exclusive to Avsim. Today I discovered FSFreeware is hosting my program, with the original readme stating it's exclusive to Avsim. Here's the text of the letter I wrote in response. Do you think it's fair?Tks, John________________________Just want to contact you regarding Autoland 2004. As noted in my readme.txt, I have uploaded Autoland 2004 exclusive to Avsim. Any site hosting it other than Avsim is required to seek my permission, and FSFreeware has not. I am curious if you noted this in the readme.txt prior to hosting Autoland 2004 on your site? Until you formally ask for permission, I ask that you please remove my program from …

Hey Gang,Just trying to get my head around this one....!!According to the announcement (Latest News - AVSIM home page etc) NAVDATA won't be available (publicly) after Oct 05. Does this mean effectively our SID/STAR data etc in, for example PMDG737 becomes stuck in a time warp from there on in ?Surely this will also effect future programming etc.Call me sceptical - but this could be the start of many further far reaching changes to effect the flying industry as a whole. Where will FS9 go after here ? Will it fall foul also to this type of sweeping decision ?Thought provoking stuff me thinks to say the least.Anyone else want to cast their thoughts on this ?Yours Concerned..…

Add a vid card like an 800XT, or any other DX9 256 meg video card and I would suggest anyone will find Pacific Fighters is a well done simulation. (vid card not "required", only it will make everything more jaw dropping)The realtime, simulation movies it is capable of creating show the depth and bredth of the sim. Much like LOMAC and IL2. Good sims, one and allThese are amazing times,bt
