"Someone once said he could teach a monkey to fly but researchers at the University of Florida have taken it a quantum leap further. The biomedical team says it has a dish full of about 25,000 rat neurons that can keep a PC flight simulator on the straight and level. "It's as if the neurons control the stick in the aircraft, they can move it back and forth and left and right," Professor Thomas DeMarse told Wired News. Now, the researchers aren't explicitly looking to replace pilots with rat neurons ... at least not yet. DeMarse said the team needed something for their neurons to do so they could try to decode the "language" they use to communicate with one another. After …

Having just finished a wee holiday in the Rhein area of Germany, I was travelling back from Boppard to Hahn airport to get RyanAir flight home.I was driving a Merc Vaneo that had GPS installed so I dialled in Frankfurt Hahn airport and followed instructions from GPS.Having been a GPS deep and religious follower throughout my trip, I was obedient to the GPS 'nice lady voice' telling me to turn wherever 'she' said turn. As we approached Hahn the GPS turned me into lanes and I found myself at USAF guard posts! Obviously they were empty and the GPS took me across old taxiways, still with markings, concrete hangers (with blast proof doors shut) and deserted accomodation. All…

Piracy has a cost. It costs us in higher prices, complex and convoluted "key" schemes, and in other ways. If there were a mechinism for you to anonymously report pirates when you found them, would you participate?

Okay, this may be a strange question but Im getting desperate here for a job outside of where I am currently (in the health insurance customer service industry).Company "A" offers beginning FA's $18.56 per flight hour to start, with a bonus paid rate of $8.75 per hour upon completion of their training. They also guarantee a minimum of 70 Flight Hours per month pay.$22.89 per flight hour after 24 months of service.Company "S" offers beginning FA's $17.46 per trip (equal to 243 miles) and must attend 4 weeks of unpaid training, with no minimum monthly guarantee of 'trip hours'.$21.10 per trip after 24 months of service. Now, if the initial training period was not considered,…

My computer has USB 1.0 and I got USB 2.0 yoke and pedals, the computer acts as though the USB doesn't even exist...it seemingly don't recognize that it's even there....Is it possible the USB 2.0 yoke and pedals won't work in the older USB 1 ports?Do I need new drivers? or what to make it connect, so I can fly online again? Appreciate your help!! Willey

I'm new here, but, please, don't let that stop you... :DI have been watching Boeing's new 7E7 progress for a while now and noticed that they either haven't designed the flight deck or for security or competitive reasons, haven't shown it. I'd like to take a walk down imagination lane and give you my idea of the ideal flight deck for this big bird.Although the existing flight decks are quite complicated and almost futuristic, they lack a flow to them that makes the aircraft comfortable to fly. I think that one touch sensitive LCD screen in front of each pilot should suffice for the instrumentation. With a glass or high impact plastic slider for the screens to eliminate acc…

Hello allIm tired of searching for a way out of my current job for a way to use my degree. A.S. Aviation Operations/Administration. I was slated to go to the MARC program for ATC at the Minneapolis Community Tech College, but the FAA cut the funding for the program. I have posted employment interest forms with a few companies, but no responses. I have thought about going back to school to become an A&P, or working in avionics, but the avionics side I cant seem to get a clear cut way for the education/experience. I have thought about being a flight attendant, but with the way things are now, I dont know that I would make much more than in my current job (@ 12.60). I ha…

Hello all,Being a student pilot (C152) I learned that my airframe has a never exceed weight and that, if you go over it, then weight cannot be overcome by lift and you end up in the trees at the end of the runway. So, with this in mind, I have a question...In Microsoft FS2004, on many of the realistic payware add-ons (CaptainSim 707 & 727), you can easily exceed the MTOW by simply loading the aircraft down with full fuel & passangers. This does not even take the cargoholds into account (they are empty). So, do airlines actually operate aircraft beyond their MTOW, knowing that by the time they reach their destination the fuel will be gone and the aircraft will be w…

Jonathan Sacks's articles re his 737/A320 experiences were an eye opening read for me - the radical difference between Airbus logic and Boeing pilot-control (even in the 777) really struck home.Even when flown manually, the Airbus flight computers do the actual 'flying' - interpreting the pilot's input; I knew this, but the way he described it really hit me - deflect the stick and the aircraft banks - rock-stable, no trim required and not budging unless commanded or trying to bank beyond what some French/British/German HUMAN:)designed as a safe angle. Yet to me this seems to be really nothing more than part and parcle of the inevitable, inexorable march of technology, no …
