I saw something odd last night and I'm hoping someone here can help figure out what it was. It was a high-flying aircraft with a solid and very bright yellow-orange light. I first noticed the light as it was coming toward me and I assumed it was a set of landing lights. But as it passed overhead I could see a pair of contrails, so it was too high to be on an approach. Furthermore, I could see the single, bright light even after it passed overhead. Landing lights point forward and generally can't be seen after the aircraft passes by.Isn't it weird for an aircraft to have a light like that instead of a strobe? Is it possible that the crew just forgot to turn on the str…

Mods,Respectfully, I must disagree with your decision to ban Eric Lunston from the forum system. While I agree with locking the thread (http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=121&topic_id=206094&mode=full), which I found to be an enjoyable and humourous parody of several recent threads, I think banning Eric for that is excessive, and I ask that you reconsider that decision.Best,sg

Not sure where to post my question, i think this is the topic. So, has anyone seen something like it ? Something that could't be explained using the technology we have today, or/and the physical laws as we know so far ? Pls let me make clear that i do not mix an UFO with an extraterestrial vehicle - i do not know if extraterestrial vehicles exists, maybe yes maybe not. I am looking for real, serious cases of people that have seen an unidentified flying object for my information and only becouse i like searching for such cases.Nikolas Vegas, Athens/Hellas

Out of curiosity, I just called a local banner towing company to find out what their pilots might expect to make as far as a range of pay goes.Just curious. Looks like a fun job.So the first woman I spoke with, after failing to answer ANY question I asked, including the name of the person at their company I would speak with, and giving me a complete runaround, suggested,"Why don't you call the local fast-food restaurant and ask what they pay their people?"Needless to say the irrelevance and runaround was stunning. When I asked for her name, she hung up.So I called back and spoke with "Barbara" - the owner - and asked the same question. I was given equal runaround.Apparent…

  9. Hello readers,Do you have any idea what happens when a team of Finnish aviation enthusiasts gather together to spend a weekend somehow related to aviation? Here in Finland, it might be a rather unforgottable event as one motto among us is "You live only once" ;)We had such a weekend in the beginning of June at Lapua-Kauhava-Vaasa area in the Western Finland. We wrote a live story with some photos to share the experience with you, take a look and enjoy it at address http://vm.pmd.fi/sgp/. After reading the story, you will find links to the photo galleries with more photos. I would also appreciate if you could place a short comment also to the guest book at the site. You can…

I am a high school physics teacher, and I have decided to use Orbiter as a means to teach students concepts of Newtonian mechanics, since these topics are so elegantly displayed in this program. The question that I have is, has anyone here used Orbiter in the classroom? Or, do you know of anyone using it? How did you use it, and what were your results? Thanks in advance.

I have just finished reading a book by Michael Crichton titled "Airframe". What a brilliant book! It's an absolute must for every serious Flight Simmer. This leads me further to ask of this community...Have you read any aeronautical novels that you would unreservedly recommend to a passionate Flight Sim addict?Three books immediately jump to my mind:1] The old classic "Airport" by Arthur Hailey (My favourite of all time)2] The tongue-in-cheek "Get Real" by Bill Smith (:( :+ :-lol)3] And "Airframe" by Michael Crichton (A seriously technical Aeronautical Novel) How about you? Got anything good to recommend?Dave

  12. A Cessna 206 went down at ESNM Optand, Sweden (very close to where I live) yesterday evening. It took off, reached an altitude of 200 meters and then dived into the forest 500m south of the airfield and caught fire. People reported hearing abnormal sounds from the engine during or shortly after take off.Four people died including the pilot, three were severely injured. They were parachutist between 20-30 years old.The pilot who died was also the pilot of the towplane for the glider club where I was supposed to take an intro flight next week...At the moment I don't feel like doing any flying, sim or real. Just feels wrong to do that under these circumstances.(links in Swed…

AVSIM is pleased to announce the opening of the Simulation Resources Database. The database we have put in place is a robust, searchable system that will provide simulation enthusiasts, virtual pilots, commercial vendors and publishers, and anyone looking for a resource in simulation or in gaming, a handy and fast means of finding that elusive site or online resource. Do you have a favorite site or online document, or resource that you would like to share with your fellow community members? If so, you can easily add it to the database. Users can rate the importance of sites, and provide feedback that other users of the database can read. We think this database has the po…

Dear friends,I'm preparing a Video DVD for my father Stelio (an Alitalia captain, now retired) and I'm desperately looking for a series of airport diagrams, originally published by Jeppesen. I'd like to add them to the video footage I made from the cockpit of a Boeing 747, and which shows a series of take-offs and landings. In particular, I'm looking for these diagrams (generally called "Aerodrome" and "ILSDME" on Jeppesen maps):* Mal

Hello,Could anyone tell me the vision requirements for my the PPL all the way up to commercial? I'm studying at Western Michigan University for Aviation Flight Science and will start flight training in January, but I just recently found out I'm partially red-green color deficient. Is that going to keep me from ever flying? :-hmmmI looked up the FAA regulations and they're very vague - something to the effect of "Color Vision: Must be able to see the colors required to perform airman duties."

  17. I've been wanting a cockpit DVD lately, and one series that I seem to recall reading about on the flightsim sites is that of JustPlanes. They seem to have the best selection, but I'm not sure of the quality. So, in coming to my expert friends here at AVSIM, I'd like to ask your opinions on:Corsair (Airbus A330-200, A330-300, Boeing 737-400, 747-300, 747SP)http://www.worldairroutes.com/Corsair.htmlor United (Boeing 777)http://www.worldairroutes.com/United.htmlThanks in advance for any opinions (or suggestions if there are better ones than these)Ken

FIRST OFF SORRY I POSTED THIS IN THE OTHER FORUM AS WELL I JUST NEED A QUICK REPLY...the more people see it the faster the reply might be...Hey guys I've been testing out a few aircraft from 3rd parties and comparing it to the default aircraft. I did a test with both and these are the results I got flying at FL370 under fair weather at Mach 0.85 full weight of 910,000lbs. for the 744ER. Everything was exactly equal on both airplanes as far as weights, speed, cruise alt., auto pilot settings, etc. In fact I actually gave them both the same aircraft.cfg, so as you can see even all their flying properties were the same, however, I got mixed resultes, this is what I got...1ST…

Hey I'm flying the Soar Airlines 747-400 from FS9. When I try to do a direct GPS flight with full fuel from Los Angelas Intl. (KLAX) to Hong Kong Intl. (VHHH) the flight planner gives me an estimated fuel burn of 64,290.6 gallons. This of course is ridiculous as the 744 only carries around 57,000 gallons of fuel.I have a few Opensky and Posky 747-400's in my system as well, I don't use them because they don't have 3D cockpit views or complete 2D views. However, when I do a direct GPS with them I get an estimated fuel burn of 41,647.4 gallons. Completely feasable.I even tried to copy and paste the Opensky and Posky 744 aircraft.cfg's to the default Soar Airlines aircraft.c…

Aircraft manufacturer beats out Northrop Grumman for contract, valued at $8B over next two decades.August 3, 2004: 8:31 AM EDT WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Lockheed Martin Corp. beat out Northrop Grumman Corp. to win a multibillion-dollar competition to build the U.S. military's next-generation spy plane, the Army said in a statement Monday. Lockheed won an initial $879 million contract to develop the joint Army-Navy airborne intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance system during the next five and a half years, said the Army, which is leading the joint project. I searched the forums to see if this has been a topic already, as this incident occurred in December, 2000. Having found no results (my apologies if this has been covered before), I am posting this because others might find it as intriguing as I did.I came across a video of a radarscope recreation of an emergency at Chicago TRACON, Dec. 27, 2000. American Eagle flight 230 experienced difficulties very soon after takeoff from KORD when their stabilator trim jammed. They were climbing in excess of 1,000 feet per minute with the control column full forward! They declared an emergency and sought to return to O'Hare. Actual ATC transmissions are included with the radar recreat…

Recently, on the first leg (of 5!) of my vacation we were coming into SLC. I could see sand blowing out pretty far over the lake and the approach was really bumpy. We couldn;t have been more than 50ft agl when the pilot throttled up and went around (it looked as though we were about to land on the threshhold area). He told us they had received a wind shear warning, and we circled around again. This got me wondering though. In msfs go-arounds are a way of life but how common is this in the real world, especially for commercial carriers? I had never been on a flight that missed an approach and neither has anyone I talked to. Thanks.Drew
