I went flying with a friend in his SR22 and happened to bring along the video camera. After a quick edit with Windows Movie Maker, posted the result here http://www.griffinstudios.tv/download.htm. Hope you enjoy, and have a great weekend all! -Kevin (on vacation until 2/28 flying around Oregon, North Idaho & Montana)

Didn't know where to post this one, so it ended up here! :( After every flight, Quantas pilots fill out a form, called a "gripesheet," which tells mechanics about problems with the aircraft. Themechanics correct the problems, document their repairs on the form, andthen pilots review the gripe sheets before the next flight.Never let it be said that ground crews lack a sense of humour. Here aresome actual maintenance complaints submitted by Quantas' pilots and thesolutions recorded by maintenance engineers.By the way, Quantas is the only major airline that has never had anaccident. (P = The problem logged by the pilot.)(S = The solution and action taken by mechanics.) P: Le…

Hi all,I am a little confused on what RVSM truly is. I understand it changes seperation from 2 to 1 thousand feet when between Fl29,0 and FL41,0 and requires special certification to fly it, but what altitude for my direction of flight?I had no trouble finding my altitude for my flight based on my going either east or west in the U.S.A. in the past, but even after searching several sources i have found nothing to tell me what altitude to fly when going either east or west with the new RVSM in place. I have also read that there are entry and exit points for RVSM flights, what is this basically and where does one find this type of information?Oh and to be sure, for flightpl…

I wasn't sure where to post this, so moderator can move if necessary. Here's my question: I have a an old computer Intel Celeron 500 with a 13 GigHard drive. It has Windows XP Professional of all things on it. I found this computer next to my apartment dumpster and refurbished keeping the harddrive intact becuase it already had WIndows XP Professional, but I do not have WIndows XP Professional disks, but I do want to be able to archieve the XP Profess. installation against loss. My main computer, a P4 3.4 Gig with 200+ Gig Hard drive has Windows XP Home on it. I already have Norton Ghost 9.0 on both machines. As we speak, I am making an "iso" image from the little Cele…

Is there anyone that's using Fraps and can't record sounds because while recording the sounds skip (also dropping the FPS down to nothing)?

Hello fellow Avsimmers :)Sorry if this is a bit of a goofy issue but its been on my mind and I wanted to share it with you all.In a nutshell - what justifies the cost of a 4-engine airliner in todays world? Why A340-500 or B747 instead of A330 & 777? With an A340/747 you got two more engines to maintain etc.Todays big twins can fly far - as far as if not further than the quads. If Im not mistaken the 777-200LR can fly further than the A340s.Lastly the reliability of modern turbofans is execptional - theres more twins over the Atlantic than quads. Im not saying that there have not been inflight shutdowns but those cases are rare.Do airlines pick quads because passenger…

What would real-world pilots do?An interesting Sim challenge: bringing a Beech C90 back to Wichita from Tahiti/Christmas Island, in the South Pacific.I can make Hawaii easy, +/- 800 nautical miles. The problem is Hawaii to the mainland U.S. - minimum distance is +/- 2100 nautical miles. Question: Do I add additional drop tanks to extend the range from +/- 1300 nautical miles to +/- 2300 (and additional weight), or take the long way home, with shorter hops through the Philippeans, Japan, Alaska, and then down the West Coast? How do they handle such international ferrying operations in the real world? The long leg over water to get home from Hawaii seems to push it, but …

Hi everyone, I was flying around today and did some searches with no results yet, what are the times in minutes required for a 747 to fly a traffic pattern? How long before I have to turn on the downwind leg and on all other legs, I know there's a clock in ready for pushback that allows you to keep trak of minutes of a go around or circuit. Thanks,David

He, he, I needed some catchy title ;-)Anyone watched the movie (now about 10 year old) with those two actors titled Heat?I just watched it with my son and the last 5 minutes or so of this fairly violent movie is shot at LAX, right next to the row of approach lights to one of the runways. Al Pacino (the good) finally shoots and kills Robert De Niro (the bad) while playing a little cat-and-mouse game in between some ILS ground instrumentation. The planes keep on landing while these two stalk one another. What I noticed and what bothers me is that approach light intensity seems to be crancked up to maximum when an airplane seems to be a minute or so before touchdown and the…

I see a FS product has been noted as "going gold" on the Avsim homepage. Just wondering what this actually means? I presume it's due to achieving a certain number of sales. But what is the figure? Are there any other "levels" - silver, platinum for example?

Donny AKA ShalomarFly 2 ROCKS!!!This picture was taken after departure from KLXV. Airport elevation there is 9700 MSL. Shortly after blueline I shut down the starboard engine and began following a valley to safety.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/107275.jpgEventually I reached 12,000 feet. At that point I could have turned left and reentered the pattern but I thought continuing 80 nautical miles to Denver was safer than attempting a single engine landing on a narrow runway at 9700 feet elevation. This picture was taken shortly before leveling off at 15,000. Terrain kept me from turning to starboard for a while but I am now on course to Denver. The HSI slaved to the GPS …

It has been about one year since this came up, so I wanted to see if more experience has been accrued. I currently use NIS 2005. It took about 20 hours to set it up with little useful help from tech support. Once I got it working it was fine, but maybe slowed the system. I just installed some updates and major problems again, windows shut down is now 7 minutes, and some programs cannot access the web, and If I try to set up a rule the program hangs. Tech support again does not seem to read what I am saying, only points me to useless knowledge base articles. I also think NIS causes stutteringI am interested in a suite solution in particular Zone Alarm suite [just received …

Hello all :)I just got to see a Discovery Channel programme on the tragic July 2002 midair collision between a Tupolev-154 & a DHL 757 over Lake Constance at FL350 and came away with a burnng question in my mind that I wanted to put to all of you.The investigation focused on two main factors:(1.) The overworked ATC controller using standby equipment while a colleague was on a break.(2.) The TCAS system. The pilots were alerted to the collision danger and the Tupolev was instructed by ATC to descend but its TCAS was screaming at it to climb. The TCAS in the 757 also commanded a descent. In the event the Tupolev crew chose to listen to ATC instead of their TCAS and *des…

:-)Hey Guys, I am currently a High School student in the process of going to college. I want to assist Embry Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) in Daytona Beach, Florida, but I need to ask some people who have been accepted and are or were currently enrolled in ERAU; therefore I can ask them a few question about the college and the admissions before Applying. (I'am not sure where or if I should post this.)Hi, I just want to put forth a warning about Microsoft XP and the disk clean-up tool. Apparently under the right conditions you can really trash your drive using this tool. Last night I used it and rendered my system useless. Actually it deleted a substantial portion of my files and only stopped because it deleted some critical system files. Subsequent research via the Internet has lead me to believe this can happen if you check off the "Old Compressed Files" option which I did. I even found one link that described a way to disable that option to prevent it from being checked.Another warning is that one should back-up their p…

Hi all, this is really off topic, but I read that this is the forum for that.Anyway since there are a lot of people from the UK in these forums and being that I'm a history freak and it's black history month in America I thought I'd ask:If you don't know. America was a segregated nation until the mid 1960's, the struggle for civil rights is a huge part of American history. And my question is, did the UK ever have any civil rights issues between whites and blacks living in Britain, or even segregation? My step mom is British and I asked her a few years ago, but I can't remember what she said. Thanks,Jeff USAF
