I got some really sad news tonight... the plane I had about half of my flight training in, as well as being my first solo aircraft, was destroyed on April 18th, taking with her the lives of the pilot and his passenger. Here is the preliminary report:http://www.ntsb.gov/ntsb/brief.asp?ev_id=2...501X00490&key=1I know of at least a couple of you here on this forum have flown 8168N at Memley Aviation, so I wanted to pass along the sad news.I'm going to miss that sweet old girl. I also got word that Memley's Arrow, 4666J, was destroyed recently as well. The pilot survived. http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/174655.jpgThis is a picture of my first solo flight in 8168Nhttp:/…

  2. can someone explain the extremely loud screeching noise of il76 engines, i know bypass ratio plays its part, but why do they sound like as of bricks sliding on concrete! atleast the 732 doesnt. i have seen the trail of that sound on 772 too, from rear. is it the turbine?also many would have observed that the a320 family engines create a loud moaning sound like no other does. earlier i thought it might only be the case with IAE engines but recently i have heard the same on CFM equiped ones too. i am just confused; even the engine cowlings and reverser mechanisms for the two are different. what exactly causes that sound??thanks

Quote:Alaska sells MD-80 fleetMove will lower costs, position airline for more aggressive growthAfter 22 years of faithful service, the venerable MD-80 is about to fade into Alaska Airlines' history. This week, the carrier agreed to sell 20 of its 24 remaining MD-80s to North Shore Aircraft LLC, an affiliate of Chicago-based Aviation Asset Holdings LLC. Alaska is currently exploring options for its four remaining MD-80s, which could include subleasing to another airline or parking them at a long-term storage facility in California until their leases expire in October 2012.By retiring its MD-80s early, the airline expects to save about $131.1 million per year in maintenanc…

I read that the authorities in Washington State are investigating the disappearance of a C177B in mountainous terrain. It was first thought that the aircraft had crashed. However, the authorities now believe the pilot may be trying to hide. He's a convicted sex offender and took his dog and two years supply of dog food.Any further information on this?

Just out of curiosity, how many copies on average does Microsoft sale of their flight simulator? I would especially like to know about how many copies of FSX they have sold.I am mainly just curious about how large the flight simulation community truly is. I think we all assume their are millions of people who fly MSFS, but for all we know there may be only about 30,000 of us or so. I have no idea. I got to thinking about this when I started playing "Steel Beasts Pro" (the tank sim). There community is rather small since the game costs about $125. So, now I am wondering about how large the MSFS community is.

I read an article on the unintended consequences of GPS on the North Atlantic Tracks (NAT).The general intoduction of GPS has resulted in aircraft following the centre-line of its track very accurately - less than the wingspan of the aircraft. In October 2000 an A340 was cleared to follow Track E at FL360 with an A330 cleared on the same track at FL370 in accordance with the Reduced Vertical Separation Minima (RSVM) Yhe A330 was slowly overtaking the A340 when the A340 was affected by severe wind-shear and began to climb at upto 6000ft/min. This was triggered by the activation of the aircraft's envelop protection system and resulted in an altitude bust of 2400ft. The late…

This was circulating in my email at work, and there wasn't any indication that this wasn't allowed to be viewed publicly. The picture itself has a copyright mark on it, and I'm leaving it unaltered out of respect for the photographer, who I've no way of getting in touch with.I present to you 787 Ship 1, heading for the paint shop.EDIT: Now I know it's okay to show it. Here's an online article with more pictures: http://www.flightglobal.com/articles/2007/...-for-paint.html-Jon

I just recently started a new job at the leading level D flight sim company. I finally got my first chance to fly one today! It was a Bell 412 Helicoptor sim. This one did not have the full motion but wow!At the beginning I was a little dizzy but after a few minutes I was acclimated and all was well. The first flight was taken by my cubicle mate, who had never flown a heli sim before. After a few moments of violently spinning about 50 ft above the ground, he straightened in out and started flying low and fast across the rural countryside. He landed in a field by slowing to about 40 knots and sliding on the skids to a stop! Not the most elegant of landings but I guess we d…

  21. Today I gave up trying to work with UNITED to fly me and my family of five from IAD to EGLL for a summer vacation. They wanted $6,000 for coach seats for us all and could not assign seats or guarantee seating in some way for all five of us on any of 8 or 9 flight options I explored with them. I've had it with UNITED on their Atlantic flights and am going to take my business and hard earned dollars elsewhere. Sad: I've been a Mileage Plus member for 26 years and been in Premier since 1987.Interestingly, I can fly to Orlando with UNITED for $140 per person and I thought about that instead. Y'know, for $140 a person, you can afford to run the risk of some cr@p happening …

Good evening, Can a private pilot like myself(PPL ASEL,AMEL Instrument Airplane) legally log flight time while flying the King Air B200 under part 91 for the time when I am actually controlling the aircraft? If so, what would be the best way to do this? The reason I am asking is because an opportunity might present itself in the very near future for me to assist with the "dead" legs of a part 135 operation, and since I am currently time buiding towards my commercial, I think this would be a good way to build some time(if its legal). The actual PIC will be an ATP rated pilot and he thinks that it shouldn't be a problem, but I would really appreciate a few more opinions. …
