Just had an interesting thought while trolling the forums about the recent news of the closure of the ACES studios and Microsofts apparent new vision for Flight Simulator.Perhaps they will attempt to deal with one of the most limiting factors for FS on PC's, the Computer itself. Does it seem to hard to imagine Logging into some kind of server set up that would do most the calculations and crunching for you and then simply display them on your PC. Now ive not thought allot about the implementation of this sort of Device but it does not seem a stretch of the imagination by any means. I would gladly pay 15-30$ a month to experience something that could come close to being a…

I know this is a very controversial issue but I'd like to get your opinions about weapons in MSFS. Not your opinions about whether there should be weapons at all or not. But rather if you could get weapons for FSX, what would be the most preferred features? What weapons would be the first you would want to be added? Air to air missiles? Bombs? Guns? Are effects more important than enemies shooting back at you? Is evasive opponents in the air more important than SAMs shooting at you? Is it enough with singleplayer to start with or is multiplayer a make or break feature? What would be the most important feature if you could chose only one? And so on.....If you don't like we…

Ruling restores suit against Jeppsen linked to 'torture flights' By Howard MintzMercury NewsPosted: 04/28/2009 11:23:15 AM PDTUpdated: 04/28/2009 09:01:49 PM PDTA federal appeals court on Tuesday reinstated a lawsuit against a San Jose-based company accused of participating in the CIA's so-called "torture flights," rejecting the Obama administration's argument that it would expose national security secrets. In a 26-page ruling, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals found that the federal government failed to document how the lawsuit would reveal state secrets, sending the case back to San Jose U.S. District Judge James Ware for further proceedings. Ware dismissed the lawsu…

I don't really understand what major differences there'd be between the larger 737NGs and the 757 series. There's not a huge size difference, though I don't know about the range. They just seem remarkably similar.Obviously they're not, else they wouldn't both exist. I'd be grateful for putting 'straight' on the matter. I know I could check the boeing site, but not sure my failing brain could manage all the technical data. Thanks

Quite often I have found myself looking for a place on Earth which has severe weather to go for a challenge in simflying. But finding such a place is not always easy. Maybe someone can suggest a good resource to look at? :)

Recently I posted here on the topic of the refusal of the FAA to release bird strike information pertaining to the Hudson ditching of Flight 1549.My premise was that the FAA has no business keeping aviation safety data secret. For that matter, the FAA has no business keeping ANY data on aviation hidden (excluding national security topics). Some of you agreed with me, some did not and felt it was not big deal to keep data that may, and I paraphrase, "...needlessly frighten the public" from the public domain and discussion. That type of mindset is exactly what led to yesterday's debacle with Air Force 1 and the New York skyline. The flyover caused widespread and unnecessa…

The management of AVSIM is pleased to announce that a total system redesign is underway. Our first priority is to do a complete remake of the file library system. That will be followed with a front page, and major functions redesign. Our goals are simple; clean up the library, add functionality and increase reliability. As we are sure that most users have noticed, the reliability of the library and the speed at which is serves our users are decreasing. We know that this is a function of outdated architecture and a reliance on backend systems that are much more hardware intensive than they can be by updating to today's latest technologies. We plan to implement similar chan…

All too often it seems we here about the bad side of service.Well I just wanted to pass on a story of some excellent service I received from Mushkin (memory).Building my new system from scratch - I7 965 on a Rampage Extreme II, 6 Gig Muskin PC12800 DDR3 with "Ascent" cooling technology, a separate Velociraptor for FSX, EVGA GTX285, Megahalems CPU cooler, Antec P193 case, Antec CP-850 PSU and an Extreme Gamer x-Fi.Everything arrives by Tuesday night, and I start to putter and assemble. I notice that the memory does not look like ones shown in the website. First reaction was - oh crap - this will take a week or more to straighten out. Wednesday afternoon I had posted a q…

A guy in northern CANADA apparently opened the door of a King Air. The airplane was at FL210 or so and there was a ruckus onboard. The interesting part of the article is they say that the guy jumped out of the craft. At FL210 if you got the door open, you would be sucked out. Oh well.JimCYWG

The second editorial published in our first edition (downloadable version): ---------------------------------------------------------------------- http://' target="_blank"> Pushing the User Envelope We all know what will happen when you get too close to your aircraft's performance envelope. Unpredictable and sometimes fatal things can happen. Exceed that envelope, and sure as you are reading this, what was a possibility becomes a certainty. You will die (in simulation of course). Once, not too many years ago, purchasing software was rather an easy undertaking. You went to your nearest software retail outlet and purchased the title of inter…

This editorial was written for our first edition that was published on March 1st, 1997.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Customer's Voice It is a funny thing about being heard by manufacturers. When does a customer's voice get heard? Let us count the ways (in ascending importance): When there is enough negative user feedback via their support system? When the negative feedback starts to accumulate like a Michigan snow in the REC.AVIATION.SIMULATION newsgroup? (do they even read REC.AV.SIM???) When users, through whatever medium available, start to compare their software to yellow, tangy fruit? When users, collect…

For those in the UK, the computer magazine Micro Mart have an article in issue 1050 (9th - 15th of April) titled "Is the Flight Simulator Dying?" It's a very interesting read and written by Joe lavery who also contributes to PCPilot. It's worth checking out. Rhydian

I apologize if this has been posted before. But I thought this was somewhat encouraging...I found this posted on fsinsider.com, link here: http://www.fsinsider.com/news/Pages/AMessageFromAces.aspx"By now, many of you have heard that Microsoft has closed Aces Studio, the publisher of Microsoft Flight Simulator. This was not a reflection of the quality of the products Aces has developed, the sales performance of the games, or the quality of the team at Aces. This difficult decision was made to align Microsoft

I consider the FS Setup I've got going on to be somewhat obscure. I was wondering if anyone can beat me with something really odd.Basically, due to my bedroom being so cramped and small, I have to make do with this - ( http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i223/jon...rs/IMG_9433.jpg )(note the cowl-flap inspired cooling idea I've got going with the side panel of my tower leaning on my PS3. Closed when off, open when on. Nice and cool for that 7 year old processor)I manage quite easily. I also personally prefer this to having the joystick upon a desk, as this is more immersive. I'm expecting a wave of "Your stick of joy is between your legs" comments, here.(it's also cool beca…

Last Saturday I attended an open house at my local Hayward (HWD) airport in the San Francisco Bay Area. The open house was organized by Cirrus and local FBO to promote flight training using Cirrus equipment. They had SR-20 and SR-22 Perspective Turbo on display. The latter was loaded with all possible equipment options. I must tell you I wasn't prepared for what I saw. Based on what I have see in FSX I was always highly skeptical how a screen can handle this amount of information and detail displayed by G1000 (in FSX it simply doesn't look very good, no matter what resolution I tried, whether it was Flight1's Mustang or default FSX's G1000). Well, the displays on real thi…
