If you are a certain age, you will probably remember a book called "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance." It was one of those books that young men read and found deep. Many, many years later, I still think of it. Although framed by a father-son trip on a motorcycle, it is really a chatauqua on what he calls the Classical-Romantic split, which he believes is the fault line in Western Civilization which, if tapped, breaks the world into two pieces.Motorcyle riding is Romantic; motorcyle maintenance is classical.I notice the same thing here. There are the numbers guys, who would fly a wire-frame model if its aerodynamic fidelity were good enough. This is the class…

Finally, after what seems like months (it was only two weeks) I got my "MIDIfied Pipe Organ" working again. In celebration, I would like to share an .mp3 recording of the first piece of music I played on it. It is my own arrangement of "God of Our Fathers." Caution! This is very loud as I pulled out practically all the stops on this. Hey everyone :)I want to combine my love of trains and aviation by planning a train trip to one or maybe two great airports in Europe. I have been recommended Frankfurt and Zurich airport to spend a few days spotting at but was wondering if there were any 'better' airports in Europe that you suggest I visit?Staying in a hotel close to the airport would also be preferable. I will be travelling on my own and am only planning to go on this trip for three or four days in July this year...Any tips/help will be greatly appreciated! Regards,-Alex.

I usually don't. In fact, if it's a complex aircraft like the A2A Boeing Stratocruiser, I almost never do. My thing is flying in IMC (instrument meteorological conditions), not flipping switches.

Hello Everyone,Are you looking for a great place to watch the action? Do you want to support a good cause? Would you like to beat the crowds? Those that know me personally know that I am involved with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Michigan Chapter. It is a fantastic cause and this year they have a great opportunity for aviation fans in the Midwest. This year the Society has the single best spot on the US side for the Sunday finals atop the Beaubien Garage outdoors. You will have a fantastic view of all the action atop this 7th floor space. I just just up graded to the new SP2 and IE8 on my Vista machine. Now all I get on the Avsim home page is the header, but not the full page. I can go to the fourms and things like that, but the full home page does not display. IE8 thinks there is a connection problem. All other web sites seem to be OK. Any one else seeing this?Bob

Before I take a trip in my prefered simulator I usually check temperature, dew point cloud cover... and sometimes the conditions out of the window when i fly from my home airport to determine visibility at ground level. I wish I lived in the US when it comes to this, because there seem to be better METAR visibility measurement there, but I live in Europe. I feel I have gotten this procedure quite right now so I get the ground level visibility somewhat right. However visibility aloft is a different issue for me. I don't fly to much in real life (sadly), but on the flights I've had I've been surprised by the low visibility at higher altitudes. THE DEFAULT UNLIMITED VISIBILTY…

  17. It's been four years since I last played the saxophone. I got bored on Wednesday, so I broke out the saxophone and played a song. I have to say, I'm surprised I even remember how to play this thing. I made a second video on Thursday for my friend, and a third one on Friday for my other friend. Here are the videos in order:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1fbVRgtCypchttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QwEsY2aTJLQhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2V7jNFh8j4

  18. Just prior to the sabotage of the AVSIM Servers, we had brought online the new tutorial system (see the link to it above). We would like to ask all members of the forum to contribute to the Tutorial System. There is a wealth of information within the forum itself that can be put in the Tutorial System. There are many members out there with a wealth of knowledge and insight into our hobby. We ask that you help us build up that Tutorial system for current and future members of the AVSIM forums. What better way to contribute than to share your knowledge and experience. Please, consider contributing your talent and knowledge and putting it in the Tutorial System for all to be…

After many years. It's not quite like riding a bicycle, but the way I see it it's mostly a matter of too much concentration for multi-tasking: starts OK but after 1 hour I'm all over the place. Brain gets tired, although I don't feel tired. At least VFR, and for small a/c, the feel is also irreplaceable I think. The seat-of-the-pants component.Nice to be back up there though!

Hello, First thanks to the guys all working so hard on getting our favorite site back online. It will be totally up and running fully before we know it. Thanks again. I have a quick question. Does anyone know of a executive type 4-engine jet during the Jetstar, Saberliner era and also was about same size and style and also resembled the DC-8 and the Convair 880. I believe I've seen it in either USAF or NASA markings. I just can't seem to find or remember what kind of aircraft it was. Any feed-back would be greatly apprieciated. …

I am fully aware that there have been attempts to produce a Gulfstream aircraft for the flightsim that has proved to be a dead end. Has anyone or any developers made any further attempts to have talks with gulfstream on this matter? Its really sad that should a great aircraft may never be made for flightsim. How about Dassault? I may not have all the facts, but personally I think that if a proper approach is made to these corporations some significant progress can be made to enlist their aid in creating one of their models for flightsim.....any thoughts?

the new Vista sevice pack is up on microsoft's webpage. one of the things they say it will do is provide about a 10% increase in performance. trying a flight out of KSFO with AI at 100%, i did see a small boost in FPS but more importantly a little bit better smoothness in a crowded area like San Fransisco.

Now I'm unable to log in with that name on the new recovered forum- site. This is obviously because I chosed to register with this name here at the temporary forum as well.My questions are: Will it be possible to use the old name at the "new" forum-site when this temporary forum shuts down? If you have coded the system otherwise, would you be able to change that?It would be so nice to keep on to the same login name that I have been using for so long time. (Not only here, but absolutely in every flight sim forum I'm registerd with - and, thats a hughe number).CarlPS…
