Hangar Chat

This forum is for the discussion of things you might discuss when going into an airport hangar.  Please make sure that your topic isn't covered in another forum before posting here.  Please refrain from controversial topics...politics, religion, conspiracy theories, climate change, COVID etc.  Topics that elicit or are deemed by staff likely to elicit heated argument, contention, or otherwise objectionable banter will be removed from view.  We allow some latitude, but please remember that, first and foremost, this is a flight-simulator oriented site frequented by people from all walks of life.

  1. Little bit early for the Tornado season, hope our members in the US Mid-West region are safe and sound. I guess this means it will be a hot and dry summer for you guys as their was not much snow up in Canada/USA this year. Alberta is calling for a fire ban already as it is dry up there. We had the coldest summer on record in NZ and a few tornado's around Auckland as well.....which is very unusual too.I am not much for the crazy theories and thinking the planet we sit on is wobbling once again. The magnetic north shifts from time to time.Cheers

At least I'm pretty sure that's what it is; the angular tail-fin is distinct, although it's seen through wobbly binocs & I'm not the world's greatest expert on WW2 fighters. Has RAF roundels on it and angled yellow stripes on the wings, and it's been doing big circuits around our house for the last 20 minutes or so (we live on a hill and are fairly isolated).Living as we do not all that far from RAF Spadeadam I'm well used to aircraft action, but not to the sound of Merlin engines!Nice to see it anyhow, although I have no idea what it's doing up there.

I have to say-I don't always follow the news on new aircraft.I have looked into amphib/land aircraft for a future purchase.I was totally unfamiliar with the Icon until flight was released. My first reaction from flying it in the sim-I don't want a flying car! I want something that looks, smells, and feels like an airplane....Wonder if others have the same reaction?Seems there have been trys in the past-the eurocoupe etc. of making the airplane a driving machine.Never seemed to work.Doesn't work for me...Wondered if I am unique...

If you look at the Index page to the forums, you will now see at the top of the Right Hand Column a block entitled TOP 5 ONLINE USERS. This is NOT the top five posters for the day, nor of the month. It is the TOP FIVE USERS of the forums in terms of accumulated time spent here. That's right; if you live in the forums, you are going to be rewarded by you name and cumulated time being shown here in bright lights for the whole world to see!!! Need I say it? Including those that you might no…

  13. Been thinking about this hobby of ours and the unique individuals that seem to be drawn to it. Each one of us have a very strange side to us, or we would not stick with this obsessive hobby for long. Even though we are very different from each other, the way we approach and develop this hobby is from only a couple of different angles. Basically there are two ways to fly virtually and make it seem very close to reality. Each has it's strong and weak points. One moves more of the simulated world into our physical one, and the other moves more of our physical world into the simulated one. Both are the best way in their own way, but as our family and friends often like to rem…

I was surfing through the channels tonight, and I came across an excellent show called "Mighty Planes" on Discovery Channel (in Canada) about the Martin Mars. I'm not sure if this was aired in the US or not, but this would appeal to many people on this forum, I'm sure. They showed the Mars deploying to Texas to fight actual fires, and also covered the maintenance involved etc. One thing that impressed me was the modern cockpit that it used. Also, the size of the support team was something I had not imagined, as they are pretty much self-sufficient when deployed.Any way, keep a look out in your tv listings if this sort of thing appeals to you.

  18. Hi,I'm trying to find anyone who will be visiting the USAF Museum in Dayton, Ohio (or lives locally) and would be willing to take a few photos and measurements of a bit of kit on my behalf for a scenery project (not Wright-Patterson AFB) I'm working on please? I live thousands of miles away and although I've visited there once I'm unlikely to again for many years! Many thanks in advanceAndy

HiI've recently have been reading up on the DC-3. Aside from the fact that the Cyclone is single-row and the Twin Wasp is double-row (and aside from the fact that the Twin Wasp sounds better), is there really any difference in the two radials from an engineering and pilot standpoint?

  20. Some time ago (okay, a month or so ago), we quietly introduced the MEMBER REPUTATION SYSTEM. We haven't said too much about it, and neither have you, [you]. Since we have not heard any questions or rumbles, we thought we would point it out and explain it, and why it is becoming important...When ever someone makes a post, at the bottom of their message will be: Up / Down Selection & Numerical Score This is equivalent to a "thumbs up / thumbs down" vote on the poster's content or whatever else you might wish to assess the post on; "tone", "attitude", sarcasm, value of insight / help, etc. The Grey number will show the plus or minus numbers representing the cumu…

Last week NHK aired a documentary special on the 787 Dreamliner on National TV in Japan. And, it is on the net but because of strict broadcasting laws in Japan I am unable to share the link here, it would be breaking Avsim's rules. But it looked just like a Justplanes video but with a bit more of a human touch all in Japanese (if any of you can speak it).As always the Japanese never fail to impress.I can't even find a synopsis of the documentary. But it starts with the Chief Training Captain of ANA and a bit of simulator time with pilots getting their type rating for 787 Ops. Then they jump into the real thing. If any of you have connections with Japan I would urge you to v…

No word yet about getting my FSX PC replaced. As a very convoluted, but direct result of the robbery though, and too complicated to explain, Two days ago, I made contact with a daughter I haven’t seen since she was 14 months old, and thought I’d never see again. 24. Alright, so as some of you may know, I managed to get on a jumpseat of an Aerlingus A330 from Dublin to Orlando two weeks ago and I promised I would write up a story about it. Having written up the story on my jouney back and then submitted it to Aer Lingus to be sensored and anything they didn't want or like edited out [They didn't edit or sensor anything BTW, but they did add a bit at the end, which could basically be translated into "Aer Lingus plc did nothing wrong. Do not sue Aerlingus plc" ] but I've just gotten it back today, so here yee go. It's quite long BTW, you may need to take yeer time. If you spot any errors or have anymore questions let me know so I can fi…
