http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/story/2012-01-15/Italian-cruise-ship/52587626/1Perhaps a bit "off-topic" but then again perhaps not.As I begin to separate the wheat from the chaff concerning this Major Incident, I see many parallels concerning this mode of transport's crash and that of it's sister, the aeroplane. Early confusion and speculation concerning the crash. Finger-pointing and pundits who "know all the facts" before the facts have been gathered. A series of cascading events that individually contribute to the event, and perhaps a bit of hubris and the frailty of the human condition. There can really be no discussion at this time concerning the events of Friday…

Hi.Just got out of work & came down to the library to look up some obscure bands I've been trying to track down and came across this...http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/English_Wikipedia_anti-SOPA_blackoutI haven't read any further than the Wikimedia page but find myself in a very ambivalent mood regarding the proposed measures (or goals). Anti-piracy... great. Anti-freedom... erm, no.Does anyone have a good strong opinion to help me settle into a groove?Cheers,D

Hey fellas - I have and enjoy the Quest Kodiak. For me, it is a real asset when it comes to earning its keep, so to speak. I especially enjoy its handling and STOL capabilities. Do any of y'all have any RW experience with one? Has anybody talked with a RW Kodiak pilot about this aircraft? I would love to hear from someone who has the virtual model and who also has some experience with the RW aircraft.I found that once I became aquainted with the abilities and idiosyncrasies of the Kodiak, it soon became a very comfortable aircraft to operate. I have come to appreciate the Kodiak's full-flap STOL capabilities. My comments pertain to the wheeled version only as that is the …

Airliner's mid-air drama revealedGEOFFREY THOMAS AVIATION EDITOR, The West AustralianUpdated January 24, 2012, 2:50 am : Listen to the air traffic control recording The pilots of a Virgin passenger airliner dangerously low on fuel considered landing at Rottnest Island or Jandakot after freak high winds forced them to abort a landing at Perth Airport. The air drama, captured on audio transcript of conversations between Virgin Flight 697 and air traffic control obtained from Aviationadvertising.com, shows the 167-seat Boeing 737 was minutes from running out of fuel as pilots struggled to land the jet because of severe turbulence and cross winds at Perth Airport on January …

HiI just had a quick question regarding piston engine startup procedures. From what I can tell, modern inline-engined aircraft (e.g. Cessnas, Pipers) have you push the mixture to Full Rich BEFORE you turn on the ignition. However, for radial-engined warbirds (e.g. Gooney Birds) you turn on the ignition (or starter) and get the prop turning FIRST, then you add the mixture. Why is that? Is there an underlying difference between the way the two engien types work?

Is there any kind of book/cd that explains what the gauges look like/where they are positioned in the cockpit and what they do in a flight simulation software? For example, Flight Simulation X. I have flight simulation X from Microsoft but I don't know a damn thing about what the gauges do or where they are located in a cockpit.Tony

Hey guys, need a little help here. One of my hobbies is to make aviation videos. I'd like to restart making them again since I stopped two years ago, but this time I'd like to take on board footage along with aircraft intercomm and ATC sound. The method I plan to use is this: Sony Bloggie camera on a window suction mount and/or a clamp assembly to attach the camera anywhere in the cockpit. Sound will be recorded via a commercial MP3 recorder connected to my headset. The thing with this arrangement is that since the signal to power the headset is too strong for the MP3 recorder the sound will be distorted and I've been told to buy an adapter cable for that. So here are my op…

Funny sort of question, but don't really know where else to take it?Due to a medical condition, it looks like I can never now hold a PPL.However, a 'friend of a friend' has agreed to let me fly his rather elderly Archer, in France (accompanied by him, obviously!).Now, I've never really been one for rules & regs (except while serving), but this makes me wonder just a little. As yet, I know very little about this pilot, other than he's held his licence for for nearly 15 years, but he is not an instructor of any type. How does this sit with R/W pilots?

The default Beech Baron 58 is the only default aircraft I fly anymore (first one I started with when learning to fly on FSX, so a little sentimental for me), but I prefer the realism of payware aircraft and the more complex systems. Does anyone have any recommendations or advise on the Carenado Beech Baron 58 or another B58 out there somewhere?

Reading about the upcoming Windows 8 and the metro interface has me wondering if Win 7 will be a permenent fixture on my desktop. I dont own a touch screen monitor and never will, as I find it would be more work to touch the screen than using a mouse. I also dont want a screen full of fingerprints! Clearly this was designed for tablets only, but will desktop PC users ever, adapt to win 8? What will it offer gamers? Seems like win 8 will bring more things running in the backround that will have to be disabled in order to keep good FPS. (From a simmers point of view) Clearly Microsoft wants to copy Apples app store and reap in profits from app developers and control how pe…

I am looking at getting a good add-on CRJ model (or even if possible a working FMC for the default FSX CRJ7). As stated in another former, the CRJ is one of the most flown aircraft, yet there seems to be a lack of good development for one. Does anyone have any suggestions? I am running Win7 64bit, FSX, 8GB RAM, Intel 2600k CPU, nVidia GeForce 560 Ti

Bit of a rant really, that's all...Am I perhaps missing something here? If so, fair be it, but this is really starting to annoy me. I'm beginning to wonder why some applications even bother to include an uninstallation routine when, all it often does, is disable the program, whilst leaving behind 99% of the associated file structure.I’m sure it didn’t use to be this way, but whenever I uninstall a program these days, I always have to manually remove the files afterwards. I can perhaps understand small ‘applets’ working this way, but most seem to do this now. Even large complex and expensive addons do this. Why? I really am curious. Is there a point to it, or is it lazy…

Hello all.I want to ask what we call this kind of take off .The MD 11 made a steep right turn entering the runway and directly engaged take off speed. I also experienced this in some flights I had (as a pax of course). Do they apply before take off checklist when taxiing? In what situations pilots are allowed/not allowed doing this?Thank you.regards, coltrane
