Hangar Chat

This forum is for the discussion of things you might discuss when going into an airport hangar.  Please make sure that your topic isn't covered in another forum before posting here.  Please refrain from controversial topics...politics, religion, conspiracy theories, climate change, COVID etc.  Topics that elicit or are deemed by staff likely to elicit heated argument, contention, or otherwise objectionable banter will be removed from view.  We allow some latitude, but please remember that, first and foremost, this is a flight-simulator oriented site frequented by people from all walks of life.

  1. Started by Kattz,

I looked through the other forums and couldn't find the right place to put this, so I put it here. Mods, feel free to relocate to somewhere more appropriate if necessary. I pulled up FSBuild and set up a flight plan from KSEA to KSFO this evening, tied REX Essentials to it, computed my loadout with TOPCAT, loaded nDAC 3 for my airport charts, fired up the 737NGX with FS2Crew, loaded my .rte, set up my SID and STAR, and altenate/hold, and off I went. As I reached TOC at FL340 and the sky was setting among the clouds, I thought to myself, "Wow; this is a pretty good product." But without PMDG, or REX, or all of the scenery devs, or addon devs, FSX would just be a …

The author of CumulusX!, the closest to real soaring weather injector for FSX (preferably with sp2 or acceleration) has released a new update of the program, with bug fixes and a few more interesting features. CumulusX! can be used in demo mode over a restricted area (in Switzerland), or registered to enable the many interesting features it provides for FSX users willing to try realistic soaring flights. Coupled with a good weather injector program, like AS2012, CumulusX! brings, even for real world glider pilots, the chance of flying over their rl areas of flight using RW weather. You can check CumulusX! here! and read moreabout it at an Aersoft forum here.…

I'm just finishing up building a new system primarily for fsx. I went through a lot of different pieces of hardware so I thought I would pass along what I learned, in case it could benefit any of you. This probably belongs in a readers product review forum but it looks like that one was closed. Also, I'm not a computer genius or fsx know it all. Anything I say is of course debatable and open to opinions, especially if you having useful advise to offer. Case: I started with the antec 900. I didn't like the airflow. I hated all the thumb screws. It didn't offer the option to install the psu fan down. It was to small to work in. When I later upgraded to water c…

Ok, I admit, it's a tad bit older. But it's a classic, literally. Dune2. http://play-dune.com/ One can play it for free in the browser. All the fancy graphics and midi sounds are in place. So get your spice! Make sure to add Highmemfix=1 to your dune2.cfg to avoid.. wait. Wrong forum.

  8. Five options spring to mind for what the premier (note i spelt it right this time!) civilian flight sim will be in 5 years time. Here's the list: X-plane Aerofly FS DCS World P3D or still FSX My vote: Aerofly FS. Rapid progress towards being a 'real' sim, this one came out of nowhere and seems to be powering along. Beatiful engine. I'm talking civ sims here. I've included dcs as people have talked about the possibility of civ aviation within it. Think it will be brilliant but still almost all military in 2017. X-plane - has had 20 years...progress seems so slow! I think it'll still be lagging in 2017. I hope not - i've just bought my first x-plan…

  9. I hope this post doesn't strike people as too self indulgent or whiney, but I'm sitting here at the computer on Christmas day, and feel a bit like spilling out my thoughts. The family and friends went away for the holidays. I could have gone with them, but no, I did the old "I'll catch up on some things I've been meaning to do, so go have a good time, and I'll hold down the Home Front" routine. So what this basically amounted to was me sitting around last night and today with a TV Dinner, getting bored as hell, and then surfing the internet (places like Avsim!). No Christmas carols, or boughs of holly, just an empty house. I had some plans, such as maybe I'll fly …

Ok, I know it's nothing to do with FS, but I know you guys will understand. Today I flew from Warsaw Okecie to London Heathrow on one of LOT's new B787-800s. What a great aircraft, very impressed with the climate control and lighting. Ok, only a 2 hour flight, but I love this aircraft :-)

I'm trying to write an aviation charter business simulation and having quite a time of it.. Could a student who just got out of school with his ATP etc.. could they open up there own charter company if they wanted to? (now I'm not talking opening up a NetJets type of charter but more of a small one person show, like Rose Air etc) I'm going to guess from what I've been studying so far that yes its possible, I guess the next best question.. how likely is it? who are the people who do open up their own charter companies? What kind of experience flying and otherwise do they have? thanks.

Now that I have turned into an almost full DCS World addict (there is still Silent Wings for the peaceful, even if sometimes challenging soaring flights..., and ELITE for the IFR proficiency :-) I am glad to see that the attention of various 3pds is turning towards this rather promissing simulation platform. Is good to know that Iris Simulations is involved in a few projects, and also very good to read this post at the AVSIM PMDG forums: For me the choice is made. Really no point in starting/installing back any of my other sim experiences of the year... and really regreting having spent my bucks in a couple of them :-( Keep an eye on the future developments at…

(AVSIM) -- AVSIM learned the true identity of Santa Claus to be Ron Attwood. Mr. Attwood was unavailable for comments, however, after many rumors and conjecture, Mr. Attwood (aka Santa Claus) made an indirect statement by way of his forum avatar at AVSIM.com (a top flight simulation website). It's unclear to reporters whether Mr. Attwood will retain his flight simulation alter ego or run with his newly discovered identity. RON! Nice new avatar my friend. I found it so creative I had to be a dork and make a post about it.

From an older thread: Well, Swoford... how was your Christmas weather? I live in Bonham, northeast of Dallas, near Oklahoma. We get snow twice a year whether we need it or not. I can only remember one other time in the whole time I've lived in the Dallas area that we had snow on Christmas eve or Christmas day, and that was just a couple of years ago when we woke up to a white Christmas. Some time just after noon today it started snowing, and we got about 2 inches total. I was surprised as the temperature was well in the 40s (F) this morning, but falling, and by late morning there was some freezing rain. This is my second Texas white Christmas. I'm…

There's a great app for Iphone's that I just discovered that allows one to land the Atlantis space Shuttle in various weather conditions and approaches. For those that have IPhone's check it out. I'm actually surprised something for a phone (or should I say a phone sim) could actually be fun and replayable.

I just bought the Jeppesen FD ipad service and got the state of california. Everything looks good except I have a question regarding the enroute portion of the app. In the government standard charts, it will give you the radials that makes up a waypoint. So for example ALBAS (located just off the coast of southern california) waypoint is made up by the 123 degree radial from LAX VOR and the 171 degree radial from SLI VOR, so if i ever needed to use that waypoint in flight I could intercept the 171 radial from SLI and fly directly to it. However in the Jepp FD charts it doesn't seem to show the other radial that makes up a waypoint. This helps a lot with navigation and I a…

Woke up this morning and wanted to do something special for the holidays in honor of Newton. I managed to buy 26 $20 giftcards (fees covered as well) as there is a big push around here to do 26 good deeds in honor of the 26 lost in the Newton shootings... In addition to what I have already given and done today just felt like a day to give. So I spent two hours walking around Toys' R Us , KMart and the Mall giving the gift cards away to total strangers. To literally be able to bring a stranger to tears and have people tell me that they "HAD" to hug me was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life... It is one of those little things that reminds you something…
