Hangar Chat
This forum is for the discussion of things you might discuss when going into an airport hangar. Please make sure that your topic isn't covered in another forum before posting here. Please refrain from controversial topics...politics, religion, conspiracy theories, climate change, COVID etc. Topics that elicit or are deemed by staff likely to elicit heated argument, contention, or otherwise objectionable banter will be removed from view. My wife recently spirited me away on a two-night trip to Paso Robles, CA, but staying on the coast in Cambria, just south of Hearst Castle (a worthwhile tour!). I thought it would be fun/interesting to contrast what such a trip would be, door to door, using GA aircraft versus a car to travel from Santa Clara (nee Silicon Valley) to Cambria, CA. Car According to Google Maps the trip by car, without stopping, takes three hours. The factors in speed limits and time-of-day traffic, which for mid-week was pretty light. Since Highway 1 is closed at Big Sur because of the bridge failure, US 101 South is the route to take (faster anyways - HW 1 is beautiful, but one Winneb…

I believe it is allowed and how else would you do a flight of just 27 nautical miles? My reason for asking is that I'm flying to the destinations which Iron Maiden visited in Ed Force On on their Book of Souls world tour. One of the flights was from Sea Tac to Paine Field to have a VIP tour of the Boeing factory!! I've not checked back to see exactly how the flight was done, but for me, in sim, the weather was good to go. I got VFR clearance, (stock FSX ATC) took off and pottered over to Everett at about 180 knots with a bunch of flap and 5000 feet to enjoy the view. Of course I cheated at the other end and used the autopilot & ILS at KPAE to line up, but what t…

Had to share this... it's called "Identification Chart," and it appeared in last Friday's xkcd. The mouse-over text reads, "Be careful - it's breeding season, and some of these can be 'extremely' defensive of their nests." If you don't know xkcd... well, you should. Enjoy!

Our goals with Flight School were twofold: to create an entry level sim for people new to the hobby and to implement technical functionality to build upon in the future. Now, we have expanded our goals for our upcoming simulator, a platform we plan to expand upon and support for years to come. We will still retain the ethos of introducing beginners to the hobby, but without compromising on the depth and complexity demanded by more experienced flyers by implementing a much clearer curve to mastery in our upcoming sim. With this in mind, we have made the decision to retire Flight School. The sim and all of your saved data will remain in your Steam library, however it wi…

Uh, had a 737 below him and landed on a taxiway by mistake. Wonder if he will get charged and fined for landing on a taxiway. http://www.nbcnews.com/nightly-news/harrison-ford-has-incident-passenger-plane-airport-n720826 Think he needs more training with FSX or P3D and ProATC-X....

Hello, I would like to share with the community my feedback about Esellerate as a payee of a well known 320-X addon sold for FSX and P3D platforms, so that other dev can have it in mind before wotking with Esellerate. For those who don't know what esellerate is, it's a sale provider administrated by Digital River that enables through its SPLITPAY functionality to setup a team of individuals working on a project, without them being part of any company. Esellerate pay everyone, every month for the sales realized 2 months earlier, according to percentages (or flat sums) established by the product's Publisher. This can be very fitting for the typical Flight sim deve…

I understand both IVAO and VATSIM networks are the best existing, but they both have some policy rules that are physically impossible for me to comply (the membership and personal data policies). The only other option I know are the FSX built-in multiplayer, which is, to say the least, ridiculous. Are there any other options, preferably available for X-Plane 11?

The big tubeliners use ACARS but what about a small charter companies? What report(s) do the pilots submit after they're day of flying? I'm talking about the pilots/companies flying smaller planes like Cessna 207, 404, B200, Navajo's and even small biz jets. I talked to an Ameriflight pilot years ago and he said they submitted a "run sheet" at the end of everyday. Which included fuel usage, cargo pickup/dropoff, departure/arrival airports ICAO codes and OOOI times, etc. Any info would be helpful.

Mods: Kindly move this to a more appropriate board if deemed necessary. I thought it didn't fit in virtual airlines as this event is open to all on the VATSIM network and not a private VA affair. Hello everybody, Pardon the pun, but how time flies. Singapore Virtual Airlines Group is pleased to present a Southeast Asian event featuring a very iconic plane and two iconic cities. Skillfully guide your behemoth around the legendary IGS13 into Kai Tak, then bring her back to Changi Airport just in time for the weekend. This month is the fifth anniversary of our beloved Queen's retirement and to mark the occasion we are organizing a groupflight to Hong Kong and back. B…

Trying to decide whether or not I'm making a big deal out of nothing. In 2008 - I purchased a product called SimplatesX from Dauntless Aviation - a collection of worldwide approach plates for FSX. During the following years, I reinstalled everytime I built a new system. A few years ago, they stopped selling the dvd version and went to a cloud based delivery system for each plate. This would be a completely new purchase. Having no interest in that form of product, I did not upgrade. Last week, I updated the motherboard and CPU on my main system, which had a working version of SimplatesX installed. When I fired up the system and attempted to access SimplatesX I wa…

We're all aware of HUDs in cockpits, but this is a different spin: http://glass.aero/ I was a member of the Pioneer Beta program, and the technology showed a lot of promise. I still think there is a long way to go with getting the necessary processing power to render a lot for graphical information into smaller packages (glasses), to keep things truly wireless. It's not cheap... And even too expensive (for me) for the generous discount Pioneer members get. However, it'll be very interesting to see how this tech matures and what may spin off from it.
