Ok, now there are three. I decided to add the Aerofly FS2 Sim to P3DV4.x and Xplane 11.x. Glad I did. It is a fun little sim. No tweaking, just works fast and fluid, much faster than P3D and Xplane 11, out of the box. I am using their Vulkan beta. It is sim candy, I feel, when I am not so serious about cockpit drill but still want fun, VFR flying in a fairly large, photoreal region, with gobs of fps and stutter free photo scenery... A better answer than Google Earth, and it fills a simming niche for me that has been missing since Flight Unlimited 2 came out. Quick and fun flying. It took me a bit for it to see my Logitech Extreme 3D pro the way I wa…

The title above talks about just one of the regular articles that one could read in Flying Magazines. Magazines were the Internet before the Internet.... This link is to their best edition, their 50th anniversary edition released to celebrate Lindburgh's Atlantic crossing. My first Atlantic crossing was 49 years, ten and a half months after Lindburgh's crossing, same year this magazine came out, in '77. He flew in his famed Ryan aircraft, I flew in a Douglas stretch DC8-63 from JFK to Munich, and like Chuck Lindburgh we almost did not make it off the runway, it was a dark and stormy night.... My birthdate, May 21st, coincides with his landing date in Paris.... J…

  10. Hi, I always forget what i should pay attention to during climb (TA or TL) and same for an approach ? Some SID and approach/STAR charts have them both . Also when flying online on Vatsim its common to have a TL with the METAR /pre-clearance request. Am i correct that when cleared to a first FL by ATC from the chart normally is during climb i switch to STD 1013. and opposite during descend/approach .First TA i switch back to local QNH ? The Colditz Glider was an attempt to escape from an infamous, escape proof castle in Germany. Although it was never used, it was fictionalized in the fine movie, "The Birdmen" which had Chuck Connors and Doug McClure, among others in it. I have the movie but it is hard to get sadly, but for those who can find it, the movie is worth watching and is in league with the "Great Escape" and 1950's true story, "The Wooden Horse" which can be found on the Internet Archive, as among a handful of the best escape movies of all time. My father shared many WWII, Korean War, and Vietnam escape and evasion books with me, my three favorites being "The Wooden Horse", "Free As a Runnin…

  14. Everything was coming together so well... I made it the the employee parking lot with time to spare, and even caught the first shuttle bus to the terminal, before I sweated to death in my uniform. Do the usual sign in stuff, and chat with the gate agent, who is flustered with a disgruntled passenger. I get the paperwork I need, and down the jetway I go. Quick intro's with my FO, who has already done the walk around and started all the necessary button pushing to get the Airbus flying. Life is good, and even better with an excellent FO to fly with. No squawks with the airplane, and good weather ahead. I'm a happy captain. Until boarding starts... Almost immediately the lea…

  17. Saw this on a few news outlets today and the condition of the pilot is unknown to the press but apparently 7 civilians/spectators/hikers were injured from the crash. For those unaware of Star Wars Canyon or the Jedi Transition, it’s north of China Lake and the Navy/Marines (maybe Air Force) as well use the canyon to fly though at low level for training purposes. Many people hike up there, which is not off limits, to take video or photographs of the jets passing through. Similar to the Mach Loop across the pond. A lot of really cool videos can be found on YouTube if you search Star Wars Canyon or Jedi Transition, some even have audio posted from the pilots taking…

When I moved to Napa, we were a hick town, not considered much worth a visit, and even more challenging, without a car you could not go anywhere, let alone get to an airport. This man, who I knew because he eventually located his airporter/tour/charter bus company close to a hotel I came to manage, put Napa on the charts as a place for all people, from rich and great to just the average Joe, as a place to enjoy from time to time. I left Napa, but Don has never left my memory or the memories of Napans and especially, those of us who could have a career in tourism, and later building the IT tourist infrastructure we have today, like myself. He also helped link Napa …

This link leads to a very interesting story about Dr. David Warren (a chemist of all things!) from Australia who dreamed of and invented the cockpit voice and data recorder. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-49012771 Here's my tip of the hat to this man's genius, and his undaunted efforts against great odds to give the world such a precious gift!
