Hangar Chat

This forum is for the discussion of things you might discuss when going into an airport hangar.  Please make sure that your topic isn't covered in another forum before posting here.  Please refrain from controversial topics...politics, religion, conspiracy theories, climate change, COVID etc.  Topics that elicit or are deemed by staff likely to elicit heated argument, contention, or otherwise objectionable banter will be removed from view.  We allow some latitude, but please remember that, first and foremost, this is a flight-simulator oriented site frequented by people from all walks of life.

I'm an old man. Like many old men I dwell on the past. Sometimes the not so distant past. I am a big fan of Turner Classic Movies. Movies made during the depression of the thirties and the great war of the 40s. Feel good movies that made people forget their trouble and the problems of the day. I watch them in the evening so in these troubled times of pandemics and turbulent politics I can go to bed feeling good. No special effects. No gratuitous violence. No smut. Just good people doing nice things and stories with happy endings. Sure there are some gangster movies but they all end with the bad guys getting their just dues. Of course I have som…

In New Mexico if you are over 79 years of age you must renew your drivers license annually but there is no fee. Mine is due to expire in a couple of weeks which usually means the dreaded trip to DMV where you take number and when your number is called you go to a window and then go back and sit down and wait an interminably length of time until your number is called again. Then you go to another window where you take the eye test, get your picture taken, and check off your vitals. You waste almost a half a day just waiting for your number to be called. You pulled Number 102 from the dispenser and sat down on a hard chair. You look up at the tote board and it says, "N…

...watching a documentary that takes me back over 30 years. Back then my boss was a guy who grew up with the proverbial silver spoon. All the best prep schools. Then Brown University. Then a graduate degree from Harvard. The good life. He live in one of the "best" residential areas in the United States...Mendham, New Jersey. And then... I came to work one day to find him ranting and raving about "that woman". "That woman" who had built a house next door and was disturbing his very existence. Before I go further, you have to understand that "next door" in Mendham means a 5-acre plot of wooded land immediately next to your 5-acre plot of wooded land. Anyway, he we…

Blue Herons are common marsh birds. You see them wading in the shallow waters of ponds and lakes. But did you know they can also roost in trees? Many of them sleep in trees to avoid predators. The first two photographs I took at the Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge. The heron in the tree I took next to one of the ponds in the park across the street from my house. Noel

Hello to all pilots, I'm flying 100% online on VATSIM/Pilotedge for 2 different VAs based in Europe (FlyUK and KLM). I'm looking for a good VA in USA to fly online: in my idea this means a stable VA since some years, that allows to fly any route (so that I can join the vatsim events and/or fly the assignments in FSeconomy). This is done by KLM in Europe: online flying only but FROM/TO that you prefer . Many thanks in advance for your suggestions, Stefano

My wife gave me this book for Christmas. It’s packed with behind-the-scenes anecdotes from Court Line Aviation, which was colorful in more ways than one. There are funny poems and cartoons about various misadventures (and hating passengers) from the company newsletter. Like the time a TriStar missed the turn-off and was stuck at the end of the runway without enough space to turn around. Ever hear of an L1011 doing a three-point turn with reverse thrust? Great reading about the 60s & early 70s in airline history. Pretty wild. There is an interesting account of a flight to Moscow (see B&W photo) with Lockheed reps to sell TriStars to the Russians. Afterwards th…

Flightbeam used to be the best in flight-sim scenery and customer service. Unfortunately, there is no customer service there anymore. I'm trying to reestablish my account since I lost my original e-mail account do to a change in internet providers and nobody replies (Sammy/Mir) for the last three to four weeks. The only one who communicates is a individual/developer at Jetstream who saw my problem. Still can't believe this lack of communication since Ricardo (LatinVFR) and Virtuali (FSDreamTeam) reply within a day. Darryl

Very good day I just want to know what real pilots do in flight planning over unknown terrain for longish distances, IF you have to fly WITHOUT Gps, using only compass, VOR, and NDB'S (Not talking about the official side flight planning) Do you use only sectional charts Do you make your "own" map with airports near or along the route with ILS data, Comms freq. distances from planned route. Do you beforehand take maybe Vor's / ILS beacons along the route and use them with their radials and distances to use as cross check for your own position How far do you space your alternate airports from each other, and do you write all their info on a separ…

Typically I find most patterns defined as 1000' AGL and each leg having a distance of 1nm from the runway in the pattern. How do you determine this 1nm distance when flying in the pattern? Is it just a visual thing that you learn from experience? Is there a trick to it?

I started this activity around this same time of the year in 1983. Am now only one tenth of an hour shy of 9,000 hours since I started logging my simulator flight time in 1987. Now 1,662 hours logged with FSX, which I did not adopt until I built a new system in late 2010. Have 92.8 hours logged in MSFS 2020. My greatest number of hours were logged in subLogic's Flight Assignment: ATP during the 1990's. My 337.1 hours logged in 2020 was my greatest yearly total since 1998, the year I first joined Avsim and transitioned to flying exclusively GA.

I'm looking for a forum to post to that is all about tutorials. I am a content creator on youtube and I would love to post, get feedback and help people out. I totally understand if there is no such forum on here, but I figured I would ask.
