I love those old 'feel good' movies. Hollywood performed a valuable service in the 30s giving the people something to take their minds off the hard times they were going through during the depression. An afternoon at the movies watching feel good movies and musicals. We are now going through such times with political and civil unrest and a pandemic and very little good news. But Hollywood is hung up on zombies and action movies where they can show off computer graphics. And television isn't much better except for old sitcom reruns and Turner Classic Movies. I watch for them A pair of goodies was on last evening. 'Meet Me in St Louis' and 'It Happened on 5th Ave…

But now, the scientists who developed them have found they can reproduce in an entirely new way – completely different from the biological reproduction of any living plant or animal. “I was astounded by it,” professor of biology and director of the Allen Discovery Center at Tufts University, Michael Levin said, as reported by CNN. This new form of reproduction sees the xenobots effectively harvest loo…

  4. Not sure if this is the correct place to post this, but here goes. I know this question has probably been asked a gazillion times before, but my situation is a bit unique. I've only ever really used FSX and haven't invested in any 3rd party add-ons. Now I want to try a more advanced sim and there seems to be two main contenders: Prepar3D and (obviously) MSFS2020. Although MSFS2020 may seem like the obvious choice, I have read that it's not so good for setting up a home cockpit with triple monitors, whereas Prepar3D excels in this area. So is Prepar3D still worth it for someone who isn't tied to any particular flight sim yet and wants to use triple monitors? Also, …

Since I was a young boy I knew that both my maternal and paternal ancestors had fought in both the Revolutionary and Civil wars. What I didn't know until recently is that my father's side of the family were slave owners. I'm posting my great-great-great grandfather's will here just for it's historical interest. No other reason should be implied. Will of George Elliott February 26, 1803 In the name of God, Amen, I George Elliot, being in a low declining state of health, but of sound mind and memory, praise to God for all his mercies to me calling to mind the mortality of my body; knowing that all must die and afterwards appear in Judgement. Do therefore mak…

I just watched Cabaret for about the 6th or 7th time. The movie fascinates me on a couple of different levels. And I like Michael York and Liza Minnelli. It takes place in 1931, two years before I was born. I'm fascinated by the decadence of the era. But I love the cabaret scenes, the dancing and the singing. Joel Grey won an Oscar for playing the master of ceremonies. He's brilliant in this movie. Liza Minnelli plays the carefree woman living from day to day as if time would never end, although in the song 'Come to the Cabaret' the end is certainly recognized by her roommate Elsie who had 'the most beautiful corpse' Liza ever saw. But all through the mov…

https://www.nats.aero/news/the-biggest-airspace-change-ever-implemented-in-the-uk/ NATS has today implemented the biggest ever geographical airspace change in the UK, removing long-established air routes over Scotland and freeing aircraft to choose their most direct flight path. The new Free Route Airspace (FRA) covers approximately 150,000nm2 of airspace over the North Sea, Scotland, North Atlantic, Northern Ireland and a small portion of northern England Wonder how long it will take for this to be reflected in sim...?

I am not sure why it took so long.....

As light from a star spreads out and weakens, do gaps form between the photons? Can a fire have a shadow? Can air make shadows? Can gold be created from other elements? Can light bend around corners? Can momentum be hidden to human eyes like how kinetic energy can be hidden as heat? Can one bit of light bounce off another bit of light? Can radio antennas emit visible light? Can sound waves generate heat? Can the decay half-life of a radioactive material be changed? Can you go fast enough to get enough mass to become a black hole? Can you make a shock wave of light by breaking the light barrier just like supersonic air…

Back when I was a kid I dropped out of high school at 16. The only job I could find was carrying hod for a plaster. Even to this day I can hardly imagine how tough that job was. Loading 80-100 lbs. of "mud" (plaster or stucco) on a carrier (the hod), putting it on your shoulder and getting it to the guys with the trowels. It wasn't too bad if you didn't have to climb a ladder for 2-3 floors. And in between loads you had to run the mixer. More 60 lb. bags of stuff to lift. It was that job that changed my life and caused me to go back to school. Now, two University graduate degrees later, can look back and realize that job was probably one of the best things in life that e…

Yup. Its that time again.... https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/flightsimsurvey2021 Together with several major addon developers and organizations within the flight simulation community, Navigraph is back conducting the annual FlightSim Community Survey. Like previous years, this year’s survey has an emphasis on the major flight simulators, but the survey also includes questions about add-ons, tools, and flight simulation on mobile devices and consoles. The answers you provide in this survey will directly help guide future projects and development in the flightsim community.

For this series of questions please consider a universe that has only four equal masses with equal 'gravity'. They form a perfect triangle. Each of the four produce the maximum possible gravity while at the 3D center of the triangle there is no gravitational force at all. We have one radioactive particle and, as I understand, as long as I am with that particle, it will always appear to have the same half life. So now my questions: 1) I am at the gravitational center of the triangle and the particle is closer to a source of mass. Does it appear to be emitting particles slower or faster? My understanding is 'slower'. 2) I am at one of the sources of mass. D…

Watched it on TCM last night. What a ship? All the weapons they had to destroy the creature. Firing automatic weapons, flame throwers, and even a Bazooka. The hull must have been made of a ferrous metal because they could walk on it using magnetic shoes. The two women crew members wore white uniforms while the male members wore tan or grey. Also the women walked around serving coffee to the male crew members who were sitting around a table. Oh yes, they even smoked cigarettes. They must have had some space ship technology back in the 50s. That movie was followed by Alien. The best scene was Sigourney Weaver's strip show in the shuttle when s…

My favorite website for looking at an analyzing weather is WindyT. It's a pretty comprehensive site giving you all the weather you want from 'surfs up' to tidal information. Lately I have noticed something interesting in Mexico, in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. There is a recurring wind event in the narrowest portion of the isthmus that causes periodic gale force winds on the Pacific Ocean off the city of Salina Cruz. If there are onshore winds blowing westward across the isthmus from the Gulf of Mexico you can bet there will be gale force winds on the Pacific side of the isthmus. I checked into this and looking at the topography there is a low spot in the…
