No doubt we're all familiar with the song, Jingle Bells. Think of the tune. We all know it. Or, we think we do. But the tune we know by heart was not the original orchestration (as written and published by J. Pierpont in 1857). Some years ago, the Roger DeCormier singers (who've done lots of contemporary music) recorded an album of original Christmas orchestrations from the Victorian era, which included songs often performed with only a few instruments and perhaps in one's parlor to entertain guests. One such song was Jingle Bells, which was first known as The One Horse Open Sleigh. Some radio stations (including the classical station WMFT) have played this…

  5. Saw the latest blog announcement about POSCON that they are officially out of beta and they have a lot of new updates! The network has been quiet lately but it seems they are very active and "in the game". I know Android when starting off didn't become popular for sometime but now it is a major player in the market against Apple's iOS... a similar thing is happening here it seems. What do you all think about POSCON? Here is their latest announcement: https://forums.poscon.net/blogs/entry/15-december-2021-update/

a recent news event triggered a pleasant memory for me. It was a Christmas Tree burning where lots of people gathered on a large snow covered farm in the country not too far from my house and all the trees were piled in a gigantic pile and set on fire - hence the name. It was a bit like a cookout - actually I guess it was a cookout - but it was pretty with all the snow and the glow and warmth of a HUGE fire casting light and shadows everywhere... People gathered in little clusters here there and everywhere - eating various foods and just socializing. Kids were sledding on the hillsides. I think I remember songs being sung in some groups. It was very enjoyable. I thi…

Pretty cool! My second thought is that something like this will eventually be a no-brainer for use with Augmented Reality googles/glasses/headsets.

Reading this reminded me of what happened to Poncho Barne's Happy Bottom Riding Club just outside Edwards AFB. The Air Force wanted to buy out Poncho Barne's place to extend a runway but she wouldn't sell. The case was litigated in court for several years with Barne's prevailing every time. But then The Happy Bottom Riding Club mysteriously caught fire and the club and house and stables were burnt. The Air Force got the land. Poncho Barnes lived quietly not far from her former club and some Air Force officers who frequented the club like Chuk Yeager often stopped by to help her out. They finally found her dead in a shack in the desert surrounded by her dogs.…

I just re-watched a movie I haven't seen in years. Urban Cowboy. It's special to me because it was filmed in a place I've come to truly love...Gilley's in Pasadena, Texas. I was only there once. In 1983. What a hoot! Saturday night. Mickey on the stage. 5,000 people on the dance floor(s) and at the bars. More bars than I ever dreamed of. And more girls too. I learned the two-step that night with a striking brunette named Sandi Lee. And even though, just as the sun was rising, I returned to my hotel room in Houston alone, I'll never forget Gilley's. And Sandi Lee. And one of the best Saturday nights of my life. Gilley's is gone now but I have tickets to see Mickey again ne…

My favorite Grumman aircraft the SA-16. We had one when I was stationed at Selfridge AFB in Michigan. And we had them at Johnson AFB in Japan. They were an old Military air rescue aircraft. They are getting a new life in Australia. https://7news.com.au/business/top-end-lands-aircraft-manufacturing-deal-c-4866810 Noel

For anyone who has the Just Flight 146 Professional or QualityWings Ultimate 146 and is wondering where to fly, 146s and Avro RJs are still being flown in Canada—and probably will be for the next 15 years or so, as indicated by Alex Praglowski on his YouTube channel. Check out his latest video here.

We were lucky to thread the needle last night here near KMDH with significant storms just north and just south of us. Sadly, loss of life looks like it will be into three digits in one night. Simbrief has clouds topping out at FL420. Really unusually large weather system. Tornadoes are not uncommon here, but have a small footprint. Sometimes you get a cluster spun out of a system and if you happen to be in the path, well, Mayfield Kentucky looks like it was hit real hard. Hope everyone is okay. Even cleaning up after something like this will take a lot of chainsaws. I don't know what they do when half a continent is divided by weather you're probably not going to be able …

Sometimes I don't feel like the usual planning and perfect execution of an airline flight. I have: made a daring C-46 Air America rescue in central America winding through the hills to avoid detection landed a helicopter in Piazza della Signoria in Florence seen if I could land a commercial jet at St. Bart's (I forget the AVSIM member who inspired me to do that with a 757) flown a MiG-21 through downtown Chicago (avoiding buildings) -- we're probably all guilty of buzzing... that's why they called 'em "buzz numbers" pull a Tex Johnston and barrel roll anything and see what happens have a beverage or two and do a circuit with every …

AIG disciples, some input please. Last night I decided to sign up to the AIG forum in anticipation of installing their AI today and after the most ridiulous bot barrier I have ever encountered - which ammounted to a long winded aviation quiz with esoteric questions about engine types on mostly retired airliners that even this old aviation nerd had to research to answer - I was then told by the algortihm that my application needed to be authorised. Well, okay, but this irritated me slightly because after proving myself to be a human willing to be the butt of a joke and to do my homework and pass an exam simply to join a forum to download some freeware I fail to see th…
