Hangar Chat

This forum is for the discussion of things you might discuss when going into an airport hangar.  Please make sure that your topic isn't covered in another forum before posting here.  Please refrain from controversial topics...politics, religion, conspiracy theories, climate change, COVID etc.  Topics that elicit or are deemed by staff likely to elicit heated argument, contention, or otherwise objectionable banter will be removed from view.  We allow some latitude, but please remember that, first and foremost, this is a flight-simulator oriented site frequented by people from all walks of life.

  8. Not sure when the last time was that I saw universally glowing reviews like this. Definitely not what I was expecting. Hopefully the corresponding DLC for MSFS, which releases on the same day as the movie, will also be good. It's odd that we know next to nothing about it, even though it was originally developed and scheduled for release almost a year ago (July of 2021). Perhaps there's a surprise or two in store.. https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/top_gun_maverick See it on the biggest screen possible. Then see it again. This morning my connection was a bit iffy and I could not synch steam or download some of my forum sites. This happens now and again here. So, I was wondering what backup you lot use for your flying fix if the magic of internet has died on you? Or do you wait for the internet to get better. Personally I think I have a couple of boxed editions of FSX that do not require internet and good old FS95. 😀

We had an awesome time and wanted to share it here. With the phasing out of VOR navigation and the widespread adoption of GPS navigation now in full swing, just how safe is a sky full of pilots flying 'direct to' via GPS and will jet aircraft adopt flying GPS instead of using Victor and Jet airways? Victor and Jet airways ensured, together with ATC, that IFR flights were relatively organised on highways in the sky. How can GPS navigation retain that kind of separation? To me, GPS direct to seems to be a nightmare for ATC controllers, or are GPS waypoints laid out in a logical way that ensures relative safety i.e. virtual roads in the sky? I think if anyone, including drones, can fly wherever they want…

I was floored by a commercial I saw on television a while ago. Eye exams on your iPhone. For 15 dollars an optometrist can give you an eye exam over your eyephone and text you a prescription for glasses. You prop the iPhone up on a table, stand a few feet away, and an eye chart appears on the screen. You tell the doctor what the lowest line you can read is and the doctor makes his diagnosis. It won't be long now before you are issued an iPhone at birth and it stays in the crib with you transmits your vitals as well as your cries to your parents and the pediatrician. Each day that passes I feel more and more like I am living in a science fiction movie. …

I’ve heard of this piece of hardware in the past but never really gave it a close look, After years of flying with a simple setup and coming to the conclusion that this world has gotten too expensive for me to keep up my irl pilot licence I’ve decided to invest some money in a better set to get that “more immersive” feeling to my real world flying of which I will have to put on the back burner for now (unfortunately perhaps forever) Ive decided to give butt kicker a better look and it’s peaked my interest, anyone using this or have experience with it? Is it worth the price of admission (about an hour or two of irl flying time would cover the cost of this piece of har…

Happy belated birthday Jack. I'm so sorry I missed you this year. CRS is a terrible disease. I remember so well wising you a happy 43rd birthday all those years ago. And I'll never forget Jackie's smile. Or that wonderful dinner at The Lodge. Or shaking your hand. All I can say is thanks. Both from me personally and from our country. You were one of the good guys.

  17. This MSFS forum, with 377,100+ posts overtook the Prepar3D forum today in terms of total posts. And it feels quite symbolic. I never bought Prepar3D, stopping at FS9 after my computer at the time couldn’t run FSX beyond a slideshow, only to return for MSFS 2020 via a quick stint in XP-11. The last month or two really does seem like a turning point for MSFS, with the release of several high fidelity planes equal to those available in Prepare3D; a big reduction in angry posts (on this forum at least) about the state of the platform; a reduction in the perceived dismissal of the platform from various commercial providers; and most importantly, a big increase in new…

A while ago we were talking about space exploration. We have discussed meeting advanced civilizations. But suppose we do develop space travel and warp speeds and come upon an inhabited planet with humanoids in the same stage of development as the Aztecs and Incas and the indigenous population of the United States at that time. Suppose again needed natural resources were found on that planet. Given our track record so far, even today in mining diamonds in Africa, would we observe the Prime Directive or would we exploit what we could? Noel

I'm no Musk fan but I think he is right ordering his workers back to the office. Letting workers work at home during the pandemic was the right thing to do. But now that it is not as serious as it was returning to work, for engineers especially, is right. When I was in engineering having a resource like fellow engineers was very valuable. If I was having a problem with a digital circuit I was designing walking a few cubicles down to another engineer for help was a valuable resource. Not a readily available resource when you are working from a computer at home. Part of engineering is the exchange of ideas and talking about problems. Computing from home doesn…

A 1950's movie which one of only 2 or 3 filmed in a special 'flat' technicolor direct image process. It was also a widescreen production with a relatively large buget. Especially for a science fiction film. Praised by most critics in that day, but panned by some who didn't like the traditional stereo types: macho tough guy ethos lead character with a 'funny' sidekick. For its day, the special effects were revolutionary and one or two shorter scenes are on some lists of most memorable in Hollywood history. It was not a box office success. Yesterday one of the women who was in my weather flight and her husband were driving through Roswell and took us to lunch. Her husband just retired as an American Airlines captain. He reached the mandatory retirement age. He told me he was in Southern California last week and is negotiating a price for that Cessna 340 with Michael Dorn. Mary was in the weather flight for about 4 years before leaving to become a forecaster at Little Rock AFB where she met her husband who was then an Air Force C-130 pilot. They have a home on a private airport park where you can keep your airplane in your garage. They used to own an American Yankee. A couple of summers ag…
