Hangar Chat

This forum is for the discussion of things you might discuss when going into an airport hangar.  Please make sure that your topic isn't covered in another forum before posting here.  Please refrain from controversial topics...politics, religion, conspiracy theories, climate change, COVID etc.  Topics that elicit or are deemed by staff likely to elicit heated argument, contention, or otherwise objectionable banter will be removed from view.  We allow some latitude, but please remember that, first and foremost, this is a flight-simulator oriented site frequented by people from all walks of life.

I follow FSElite but they seem very slow to report on FlightSim related releases, updates etc. Can people list other sites that are better?

  3. I had this idea a few years ago for a small inline turbine that you could hook to your water line coming into your house. I had no idea how much power could be generated with it but apparently (as always) Im a few years to late with my idea: (this is larger scale but microhydropower systems apparently exist - I saw a video of that used gutters/rainwater to generate electricity) and I'd really like to know why all skyscrapers don't make use of the anthill effect by placing turbines in shafts that run the height of the building.

  8. There's always a strange feeling of melancholy when something that was or is so intrinsically associated with your past goes away forever. Nichelle Nichols herself by all accounts seems to have had a life well lived, as she and her co-stars had opportunities to go places and see things that they might never have had the chance to otherwise, had they never found themselves connected forever to a strange little show that became a cultural icon. I think any of us would wish for a life at least as fulfilling, much less a legacy as enduring as hers and her fellow travelers from that enterprise will undoubtedly be.

When I was with the 3rd Bomb Wing at Johnson AFB in Japan the B-57s often used starter cartridges to start their engines. The starter cartridge was like a huge shotgun shell without shot mounted in the nose cone of the engine. It was electrically fired and the gasses were routed to a small turbine which in turn started the main engine to turn over fast enough to start. I had no idea B-52s used them too. But the smoke brings back memories of the B-57 starts on the flightline. Noel

My Radrover 6 Plus was delivered yesterday afternoon. My landlord helped be to get the heavy monster out of the box(~85 pounds), but I was able to get it fully assembled in a few hours today. It will be interesting to see how it will handle the occasional steep grades here in the Ozark mountains! I'm hoping that with the minimum "pedal assist" I'll be able to strengthen my legs and improve my walking ability. Fortunately, there are plenty of paved back roads here in this rural area.

Astonishing how many times this guy gets stopped by the police. Understandable given the unusual licence plate issue, but you'd think he'd get sick of the hassle on his road trips and hire a car instead of shipping the Lamborghini over.

Check this out http://www.syberjet.com/ I'd never even heard of this. It maintains a sea level cabin altitude up to 41,000 ft, has a max ceiling of 49,000 ft, and 476 kts cruise speed, and max range of 2,500 nm. At its max altitude the cabin altitude is only 1,800 ft. Pretty impressive. Dave

Just let it fall back to Earth and hope it lands in the ocean seems to be the philosophy. There could be sections as big as 20 -30 metres long surviving and hitting land or ocean. 11:18 in video

  16. Cataract surgery! It got so bad I had to stop motorcycle riding - I was a danger to myself because of my inability to see into the corners, and my peripheral vision was shot. Even the big E on the chart looked like Klingon! I had the left eye done first, and the contrast to the right eye caused an immediate decision to finish both eyes. I elected to remain near-sighted, as 90-percent of everything I do day-to-day (reading, computer, cooking, phone, et al) is within 1-3 feet of me. However, I did get a pair of glasses that is optimized for the computer and the perceived detail while flying is simply amazing. Highly recommended!

A college or university degree is a door opener. It opens the door to a position that those without degrees are usually excluded from. When I was a volunteer at the wildlife refuge every summer we had volunteer college students working off their student loans and I would always tell them that your degree only opens the door. Once inside demonstrated performance is what gets you ahead. And even those without degrees can become engineers or accountants through demonstrated performance. Why did I choose those two? Because I was a non-degreed development engineer in four companies I worked for. And my youngest daughter is the CFO of a mortgage copany in Den…

Well done to Mick West for his analysis. But of course they are still claiming they are drones. Even in the congessional hearing they thought they were drones. At this rate, don't hold out any hope for the task force to figure UFO's out boys and girls. 🙄

When I was growing up I was taught that there is a very specific way to use the term "you all". First, never use the term when taking to a single person. If there is only one person use a simple "you". When there are several people it changes a bit. For 2-5 people the term "y'all" is appropriate. For a group of more than 5 people you should say "all y'all". That's just how one southern-raised family used it. I'm curious to know of there are other "rules". Probably, I just don't know what they are.....Doug

The great Martin Rees. Called Martin so he must be awesome. He makes a good point, that we don't understand what caused the transition between complex chemistry and the first replicating metabolising entity we call alive. We don't know if its common or rare, a fluke that might not have happened elsewhere. Still an open question. Same for intelligence, may have been a rare fluke. We simply don't know at this point.

Last evening on TCM I saw the ORIGINAL Godzilla. Not the ne with some American actors (sorry Raymond Butt) but the original one made in Japan. The dialog was all in Japanese but they had English subtitles. It was very good for the period. I don't really recall much of the American version, but the Japanese version seemed to be more focused on stopping H-Bomb tests. Noel

Today I think I'LL fly my C46 Commando SE from Benghazi down the Libyan desert to the coordinates of the "Lady be Good" crash site. Familiar story to many, the Lady was a B24 on its first mission for plane and crew out of Boluch Libya on a raid to a port in Italy. On the way back she was separated and disoriented over the Mediterranean and in the dark the crew overflew their base thinking they were still over water they flew over 400 miles into the Libyan desert. They bailed out when three engines quite due to fuel starvation, still thinking they were over water. The plane flew pilotless bellying into the dessert, breaking in two but little else damaged. Sixteen years lat…
