I am currently researching hardware for an upgrade to my current specs.I am building this with the future of FS10 and WIndows VISTA in mind. What I am looking for is advice on the following :I want to go to the AMD camp and am wondering should I go with X2 or stay with the single core.My choices are :64FX55 $811.0064X24400 $497.00I would rather save the $314.00 if the performance gain is minimal. As far as the MOBO I see that the hottest board out there is the ASUS A8N32-SLI.I am wondering which board (Deluxe or Prem)is more of a benefit since I plan on not using the SLI.Graphics Card I will stay with the ATI platform and I am consideringASUS EAX850XT PCIE 256MBSapphire X18…

Hi all!OK, I need your help in making the correct graphics card purchase. Since I'm on a budget and still will have to go AGP, I've narrowed my search down to one of the following, though other suggestions will be welcomed:***Leadtek 6600GT (NVIDIA)http://www.nextgenelectronics.com/winfasta6600gt.phpAs far as I can tell, this is a good card gor the price, and it's supposedly quite silent, which is important to me. BUT, I've seen complaints that the card has a tendency to overheat and crash games on that account. I do not want to deal with crashes in FS based on poorly designed gfx cooling.Speeds: Core 500 MHz Mem 900 Mhz GDDR-3However, this is only a 128mb card. ***Sapphi…

Hi,I've set up a new computer with a RADEON X800 GTO 256 MB PCI-E graphics adapter (WinXP SP2, Catalyst 6.1, 17" LCD + 19" CRT). Everything works fine, but I can't enable AA. Regardless whether I try to enable it in FS9 or in the Catalyst Control Center all lines are very jaggy. This doesn't seem to be an alpha-channel problem because the jaggies occur on ground textures as well as at the edges of an a/c. I tried different desktop resolutions and monitor refresh rates, I tried a CRT monitor as well as the LCD display -- nothing helped.I can remember that on my second system an older RADEON 9800 PRO 128 MB AGP showed a similar behavior. But in this case I could solve the p…

I have a fairly weird problem with the FSD Cessna 337 that I was hoping someone here could help me resolve. The aircraft works just fine on my system, except for one issue with the sounds that I have been unable to resolve. When the power is brought into the cruise range, I hear a rythmic "tick-tick-tick" that almost sounds like the audio file is looping every second or so(it seems to disappear at very high or low power settings). I have listened to all of the files in the 337's sound folder, and the ticking in't present in them, so it is apparant that the ticking is coming from how my PC and FS blend the sound files(The FSD Skymaster is the only aircraft that does this). …

I've just been to the Omega driver site, where the latest set of drivers for NV cards appears to be Nvidia Omega Drivers 1.6693 (Forceware 66.93). The date is 4/6/05. which surprizes me that irs been so long since new drivers were added. I'm currently running the 77.77 NV drivers, and I'm not sre how they relate to the Forceware 66.93 ones.Anyone have an idea what is the latest? Thanks,Bruce.

Ive been using creative sound cards for a looong time with no problems. But I have been hearing about how they are resource hogs, and I have run up against a problem with David Maltbys BAC1-111 where I hear static and sometimes the game crashes. So can anybody point me in the direction of a sound card that supports EAX and my 5.1 analog speakers?

Hi all, I just built an ASUS A8N-SLI Prem sys with an Athlon 64 4000+ CPU. I found my 1 GB of Corsair XMs memory was bad after extensive troubleshooting (2225 latency) and replaced it with Kingston "value Ram" 2GB).Now it works great. I am trying to decide whether or not to swap out the RAM back to the corsair after it is replaced or to sell it.Will I really see a performance gain going back to the Corsair XMS as far as FS is concerned?ThanksStan

Hi,If you are like me you have been living a life of permanent anxiety as you wait for your HD/s to fail :(Now I know most are pretty reliable these days, but that is small comfort when you hear tales of unexpected failures with loss of hours/days/months/years of work.I imagine the majority of us have mainboards that are S.M.A.R.T capable and enabled, but can we really rely on this monitor to warn us in plenty time before disaster strikes? This may well be the answer to our prayers:http://www.passmark.com/products/diskcheckup.htmI, for one, am feeling much better now! Both my HDs appear to be in tip top shape and regular checks using this utility should give me all the war…

Latley, I've been receiving this message during a flight regarding real weather: "Real weather has encountered a probem. Be sure you are connected to the internet." I then click OK and the flight continues with real weather. I would expect a problem if I was on dial-up, but I have DSL and it's always connected. Any ideas? Not a big problem, but an annoyance. Thanks for your ideas.

Can somone give me an opinion if the $300 difference between a P4 3.6 and a 3.8 is worth it. I guess I am really just looking for whether or not the I would gain that much performance (and not just in regards to MSFS) but in general computer use. I am wondering if I get the 3.6 will I be missing out on performance but then again if I get the 3.8 will I have spent more money for a negligible difference in computer performance. Thanks for an advice

Hi all, for some reason, I cant choose to "save as" files when downloading from avsim or flightsim.com. It just automatically pops open after downloading the file and then cant move the content inide the already opened folder. Is there a way to have the computer ask me where to save the file before downloading it like it used to? I remember at avsim my popup blocker coming up and then clicking the popup blocker to start the download. I dont get that anymore. I think I accidentally clicked on "always ask before opening this type of file" on the download prompt. I want to disable that choice. Thanks,Bill

Some time ago I was surfing the Web for Fresnel lenses for use with PC monitors and came across a site that sold the lenses on their own but also did kits which comprised a black hood that attached to and projected from the front of the monitor. The lens slid into a sort of slot in this hood.I thought I had bookmarked the site and/or saved the page but cannot find it now, nor does a 'Google' of web turn up the site.I am almost sure the site was a UK one and I think the name began with 'M'.Does anyone know the site I am talking about, if so could they post the URL please? It may even have been from one of the small ads either side of the AVSIM title here.NB I do NOT want a …

I've used several on-line security checks (below) and all report a open port # 23 which is Telnet. This appears to be the only open poer I have found so far, and of course warnings flash up that tell me stuff like my computer is a security risk. Is this actually a problem, and how would I go about closing port 23?Thanks: Bruce."Symantec Security Check (Once on the page, click Start under "Security Scan".) Gibson Research Corporation (On the page, scroll down, and click ShieldsUP!) Sygate Online Services (On the page, click Scan Now.)"

I right now have 256MB 7800GTX and have an X1900XTX on they way. How does an X1900XTX or an X1800XT performs in FS2004 compared to a 256MB 7800GTX. If it performs worse than my 7800GTX in FS2004 then I won't open the box and I'll return it for a refund and wait for a faster card to come out. I play FS2004 at 1600x1200 4xAA and 8xAF and most details maxed.

I found out something VERY interesting and VERY helpful, to me at least, and thought it might be useful to other people. If you are running NIS and are just disabling it for FS, that will not help. The process that goes on even after you disable things is ccqpp.exe, listed as Symantec User Session. If you notice under task manager it uses LOTS of resources. I attempted to stop it with my ENDITAL program, but it did not let me, nor would end task work under task manager. Well, I found the reason. In NIS main panal under options, then norton internet security, there is a box at the bottom which when ticked protects the program from being stopped by another program. I untick…

Hi my fellow simmers,I am currently running an ATI9800pro 128meg video card on an Intel 3.4 gig processor with 1 gig of ram. I also have dual monitors, a Sony 19" lcd and a Sony 19" crt. I want to improve the video performance. What would you suggest regarding a video card that would be powerful enough to notice an improvement. I know this is a time worn issue and I appoligize if my post irritates anyone. But, with things changing as fast as they do, I wanted to get the latest in opinions from those who know. Thanks,Bill Worth
