I'm in the market for a new flight sim PC. Budget of £2,000, clean sheet, no recyclable components from the current rig (2013 i7-3770k) except the 1TB HDD. I'll be running P3D and probably MSFS2020 on it. What's the best options?

All I am currently rebuilding my office and have been looking at the pending release of P3D V5 and FS2020 and thought i would do a health check on my system. Traditionally i have built my own but would be happy to look at some pre built options if they are reasonable. Can someone in the know let me know how far off the mark my current set up is in my signature strip below. Its nearly 4 years old now.

What do you guys recommend to best gauge speed and drive performance? I have crystal disk installed already. Historically I've run P3D on my samsung EVO plus 970 1tb. But I also have a Adata SX8200 Pro 2TB. I'd like to make sure the two drives are close in performance and I wouldn't be leaving performance on the table installing V5 on my Adata. thanks

  4. Hello, I assembled my new PC using an MSI MPG Z390 Gaming AC w/ an AMI BIOS. It runs beautifully and cool at P3D's version of full load at 4.8Ghz at 1.15v, fixed. I'm sure it would go higher but I'm happy here for now. I'd like to change to Adaptive and use an offset to bring down the VID as conditions warrant. I noticed using Core Temp VID is reported to be 1.2349v no matter what the load as expected in fixed mode, w/ Core Voltage set to 1.15v in the bios and this also is reported as 1.15v by CPU-Z. I don't know what VID is, but I've guessed it might be what the voltage is the core, versus what is delivered to it, but that makes me think VID reporting in Cor…

Back in 2011 I built a PC to be primarily used for FSX acceleration (and flying on VATSIM), and it's still serving me pretty well today as my all around desktop. The specs are: ASUS F1A75-M MB. AMD A8 3870K Black 3.0 Ghz processor. 8GB (3.48 usable) of RAM memory (on 2-boards). A friend gave me a VISIONTEK 77701GHK Radeon HD 7770 GHz Edition 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card a few years ago. I have a WD 2TB HD installed. Is this system worth upgrading or should I build a new one? FSX always ran pretty good on it, though I'm thinking that I might be better served upgrading/replacing to …

  6. I have a Samsung 860 EVO 1TB storage SSD on my old rig (Windows 7) and wanted to transfer it to my new rig (Windows 10) as additional storage. At the same time I purchased an additional brand new 2TB SSD to add as well. The new 2TB drive was recognized by the bios and i added the drive as normal through the disk management tool. That worked flawless. However the old 1TB drive does not show up in the bios. I tried different cables, different sata ports, different power cable. Nothing. Thought maybe the drive went bad when I swapped it out so put it back in old PC and it works fine yet. I formatted the drive (quick format) on the old PC but no change. Bios on the new PC wil…

Hi! I have a question about FSX-SE: I have installed on my laptop the FSX-Gold version with all the optimizations on the .cfg file, the ORBX Global and openLC Europe installed, some photoreal scenarios and DX10 Scenery Fixer. I can run FSX with about 20fps, but my main problem is the 86/87 ° C CPU temperature measured with MSI Afterburner (I have already run undervolt for the CPU with ThrottleStop). I have an Asus ROG 752VW with Intel Core i7 6700HQ @ 2.60GHz, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M 4GB and 16GB of RAM, the problem is that it only has one fan for GPU and CPU (so it is not well optimized for dissipating heat). I know that using a laptop for a flight simul…

Hi. My english is not so good. Hi. Various issues. My current pc, which is 6 years old, is as follows: Motherboard: I do not know, but I open no idea. I dont complain. First question: restyling it for P3D? Second question: do I make a new one? In the first question what should I do? Change processor? …

  11. When it came time to create a new volume on this new NVme drive in my new PC build I saw the checkbox choice for MBR (default) and below it GPT (GUID) type disk. Well I just left it in default never bothering to look into what this choice was about. After reading about the differences it seems like GPT was what I should have selected. Fast forward to now and I had already installed Win 10 & P3D w/ all its updated add-ons before learning about GPT v MBR. Apparently Windows 10 comes w/ an MS utility to convert an MBR type disk to GPT with no data loss, called MBR2GPT. The caveat is your hardware must be able to be UEFI compliant because GPT drives can only be b…

  14. I wasn't sure where I should post this. I am going to assemble a new 9900k system while I am at home more over the next few weeks. I have designed many systems, but I always have them assembled by a shop. One thing to note - I am not a handy person Are there any good videos that provide step by step instructions on how to assemble a higher end system? I have watched a few, but I was wondering if there is a really good one I should check out. Thanks

Hi there, since I am stuck at home for the next month or so, I have decided to build a new rig. My current one is 6 years old, so it is time. Also, I need something to keep me sane. I really don't have a budget. I typically build the best systems I can afford, because I keep them for a long time. I throw a lot at them (add on scenery and AI traffic). This will be a FS only rig (P3D and beyond). I think the only two things I am keeping from the current rig are the 1080TI and the 32" 4k monitor. Processor: It looks like the two processors in the running are the 9700k and the 9900k. Not sure which one is the best. I will OC, but I'd like one that is an easy overcl…

If you've used recent models from MSI please comment on your experiences as far as problems w/ hardware, customer support if you had to grapple w/ issues, longevity, automated overclocking routines in their software, and so forth. This particular board has the feature set I'm after, the price is decent, and reviews on newegg are decent as well. Thanks!

  17. Hello everyone, So recently I upgraded my RAM to a slightly faster speed up to 3200MHz using Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO DDR4 C16 (2x8GB). 19. I'd have posted this in another thread about this case but I'm on a rampage now having got everything installed in my new build and I'm anxious to power up and install Win 10, but I'm confused as to the PWM Fan Hub included in this case. In the schematic below you're supplied w/ a labeled cable to connect the 4-pin on the hub to the motherboard CPU fan header (the universally PWM compliant header), so if you want PWM mode, you must connect it to the CPU fan header. Some mobo models support PWM mode thru all headers, but I can't tell if that's the case with the MSI MPG Gaming Edge I'm using. The manual states the CPU/Pump Fan header 'by default' is in PWM mode, and the …

Seeking advice from experienced FS users: I want a portable system to practice IFR procedures only, fly in clouds to minimums and go missed approach. I travel for work and need something that will fit into a checked luggage bag. I'm thinking a laptop with four USB ports (control stick or wheel, throttle, pedals and mouse) HDMI to a separate but small screen (23"?). I don't think I need great graphics, I won't fly VFR for fun, just clouds and IFR procedures. What would you recommend for flight controls, laptop, monitor, and other accessories? Thanks for your help and advice

So, if you don't a recent build and like your results please share your parts list: Motherboard Ram (16Gb x2) Case (I guess a mid tower is fine won't be much in it) Noctua cooler w/ best performance that works w/ the above parts Thanks in advance!

  24. Hello, The motherboard I'm using has these spec re PCI and storage. I'm ordering a 2Tb NVme 2280 drive as my OS/sim/add-on drive. I need a 2nd drive for data and for storing an image of the primary drive if that's possible going from NVme to SATA III as the data drive. I'm guessing the transfer rate between my primary NVme and data SATA III will be limited to the SATA III"s maximum rate or less, but I also read when the port is shared this means they don't really 'share the bandwidth' as is stated below in the specs*, but only one can use the bus at a time. If the latter is true, what happens to transfer rate between NVme and SATA III? Also, I don't know if …

Okay, theres me, knowlegable when it comes to all things PC Hardware... but never paid much attention to networking. So much so that I had no idea you could whack a sim in a router and use the mobile network for your household gear. My daughter has got herself a cracking job in the Channel Islands (you guys from the US have probably never heard of them) so here with her setting up her rented place. Guy at ISP's store gave us a free sim to try so we could see what sort of speeds she would get. Now bear in mind that in the UK (BT Infinity) I get 74 mbs.... she gets 200 mbs! From a mobile network! Shes pays 30 quid I pay closer to 50 but for phones and unlimit…
