Hi folks, I've been running FSX on a 27" iMac (2.93Ghz i7, 8GB RAM, Radeon HD 5750 1GB) in Bootcamp with Windows 7 for the past couple of years, and I'm looking at building a dedicated PC for FSX. I primarily fly the PMDG 737, along with the Level-D 767, RealAIr Duke, and Flight 1 Cessna 182 and Cessna Mustang. I also run a fair amount of add-on scenery, primarily OrbX. I'd prefer to keep things under $1500 all in, with under $2000 as a stretch. Here's what I'm looking at. I'm looking at the i5-2500k to overclock it. Any thoughts before I pull the trigger? ok, so I'm a noob to FSX and when I built my PC about 3 months ago, I didnt know squat about FSX, so I simply built it with the best I could get at the time, and ended up with an Asus P9X79 Pro board and a Sandybridge 2011 i7 3820 CPU... After 3 months of reading and playing about, I'm now tempted to replace it with: ASUS Maximus V Extreme Z77 + i7 2700k.. Overclocking it to 5gHz... Any good guides or "how to's for this" ?? I heard that my current CPU on the ASUS P9X79 board can go to 4.9gHz but cant for the life of me find anywhere that shows the settings for this or how to do it?? I have a watercooling setup too...

  4. Here I'd like to show you how easy it can be to built custom hardware for your Flight Simulator. The above switchboard is made from two gamepads and a mouse (only the wheel). Basically you need to get some hardware switches and connect them to the gamepads circuit board. BIG advantage: as the gamepad is plug-and-play so is the modified version. All switches can be assigned to FS functions through the game menu. First, remove the cover and all parts of your gamepad. If you like, you can connect it to the PC, open the gamecontroller system menu and watch if the button is shown as pressed on the screen when you connect the two little golden areas found on the boar…

Hi There, I have through my son recently got into FSX and have been amazed at the quality of addons that are available that make this piece of software very realistic. I have been thinking about buying a new PC for this project and would like some advice from you experienced guys as to whether or not this is a good PC Asus CM6870-CA-3AA 3rd Gen i7 3770 @ 3.4GHZ 16GB DDR3 @ 1600 MHZ Nvidia GT630 2GB DDR3 2TB SATA Drive 300W Power supply I know to get peek peformance I would need to upgrade both the graphics card & PSU but other than that is this a good PC to handle FSX plus various scenery addons. I can get this PC on sale for $900 in Canada. A…

Hey folks, Just a quick question, I seen somewhere yesterday that tri channel (triple - whatever) is better for fsx than dual channel, i cant link the source because i cant remember where i seen it, im sure it also said that tri-channel ram was excellent for the i7(it was an fsx related topic i had read) The z77 mobos ive been looking at (asrock extreme 6 and the p8z77 pro) both of which say "dual channel" in the description, So how does this work then? can i still put in 3X2g sticks of tri channel or with the board do i have to stick to dual channel? Also i recently asked but it was overlooked, - has the forum been changed recently as i cant see the post to…

Well I finally upgraded my computer. Actually it's a new one. This is going to be an FSX only machine using Simconnect. 1. Asus P8Z77-V Pro 2. Intel I5 3570K 3. Kingston 8 GB DDR3-1600 4. Asus Geforce GTX660 2GB Direct CU II 5. Intel 520 120 GB SATA SSD 6. WD Caviar Black 1 TB 7. Antec 650W Power Supply 8. Cooler Master Hyper TX3 Cooler 9. Win 7 Professional 64-bit I have decided that I did not want to OC and felt more comfortable backing off a little on my setup. A lot of my decision was based on the experience with my E8600 where I could get 30 fps except in heavy scenery areas like FSDT KDFW and flying the PMDG B737 where …

Hi guys, Recently, someone was inquiring if Z77 is more stable than P67 when it comes to cold boot problem or sleep mode. I was running Asus P8P67 Pro mobo until recently, and while it was quite stable, it was totally unstable when turning on or when waking from the sleep. Now, I have been living with it, until the Saturday, when I turned on the computer, it made 2-3 turn on-offs-ons on the boot (=the cold boot problem), locked up, I reset it, and when I was in Windows, all drives that were connected to the Marvell controller were not working. The whole windows was half frozen. In BIOS they appeared however. I decided I didn't want to have my Sunday without my…

I have 2*2G memory modules installed in my MSI KA780G mobo. Will I see some improvement in FSX if I go to 8G ? Currently there are two matched Kingston ValueR DDR2 PC6400 CL5 installed. I dont find exactly these modules for sale any more. Is that a problem ? Or is it sufficient to get two modules with the same technical specifications ?

Hi Guys Being a long term I.T veteran, I can pretty much write down everything I know about FSX on the back of a stamp! So, my question is about memory and FSX specifically... Which one is better: 1 lot of matching 4 x 4GB quad channel = 16GB 1 lot of matching 2 x 4GB dual channel = 8GB 2 lots of matching 2 x 4GB dual channel = 16GB In my machine currently, I have, mistakenly, 2 lots of matching sets of 2 x 4GB dual channel, thus I have 16GB, but not in matched chips... It works, I can just about hold 30FPS in the 737NGX into heathrow, but, I havent installed any of my Aerosoft scenery yet... Nor FS2Crew... So I'm wondering, would FSX be better i…

  14. Hi Guys, This forum sure has changed alot since I was last active around here. I haven't been around in probably the last 5 years and I'm looking to change that. I won't lie by saying that I don't miss the hobby, because I do. My last two computers have been laptops, and though the convenience of being able to fold up my computer and carry it with me to work is nice, I want to go back to a desktop for the power. I recently dropped $4,000 for my paramedic class (currently an actively employed EMT in Texas), so I don't have the cash to drop on all the components to build it myself. I purchased an XPS 17 last year with intentions to return to FS but I never got around to…

Ok, I understand this might be a bit loaded, but I'm trying to figure out the benefits of an IB processor over the SB-E. This is not neccessarily FS only related. From what I see the new IB processors give you better PCie lane support and overclockability? Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. Here's the 2 builds: The 1st build allows for quad channel memory where the 2nd one does not. I left out the graphics options as I'm still reconsidering ATI. The problem is the 9000 series which are upcoming just teases me. The problem with ATI is that the drivers make playing anything almost impossible due to constant black screens, so I may just switch to …

I am overclocked to 4.9 on a SB2500K. I was having problems with idle freezing and to resolve it I have had to take the LLC to level 1 (flat line) and increase the offset to +.005. I am very stable now but running higher voltage than I was before and higher temps. With FSX running my temps are between 65 and 84. The two inner cores hitting the low 80's once in a while then dropping back into the mid 70's. Voltages while running FSX are 1.40 to 1.416.

  19. Hello (sorry for my english if i write weirdly) I have some questions; does the i7 3770K makes really big difference in FSX compared to I5 3570K ? (like + 10 fps or more) Or the difference is not to much (+2 or 3 FPS) Should i force my budget and pay +100 euros for i7 3770K instead of i5 3570k ? Knowing that i will be able to easily OC the 3570K, but the 3770K is hard to OC (de-lidding, water cooling system ... ) So, should i pay +100 euros for +2 mb of cache ? what do you think ? thanks

Hi All OK so I've just built a new system and am attempting overclocking for the first time (eek!) I've read a few guides, so I think I understand the basic principles, but would appreciate some guidance from those more knowledgable than myself. I have a 3570K on a Gigabyte Z77 MOBO. OK, so I started by upping the multiplier to 42 and leaving the Vcore untouched. This booted fine and handled the Prime95 test fine, no BSODs or anything. I then upped to 43 and had to increase the Vcore to be able to avoid BSODs in Prime 95. Same again going up to 44. At 44x I had to increase the Vcore to 1.33 to get it to avoid crashing in Prime95. I think this is a …

OK, So I totally underestimated the difficulty involved w/ OC'ing and have come to the realization that I just don't get it  I've read a couple of guides which make it sound easy but taking each guide step and mapping that to a bios option is not so easy (for me anyway). What I'm in need of/looking for is a guide for idiots that will walk me through the bios and tell me what to set and what value to set it at. (I realize this is cpu/chipset/mb manufacturer/dram/cooling sys specific) Is anyone out there willing to walk me through this or am I left to my own devices...? NOTE: see my profile MY PC for rig details TIA
