This flight will take us to a highly contested region. Turkey and Greece had never been friends in the past and even today crossing from one country to the other isn't easy. In real life, this flight would be a challenge in getting clearances and landing permissions. But for our international community of peaceful pilots, exceptions were made, all clearances and permissions are there, let's go! Departing from LGRP (Rhodes, Greece) we will land at LGSM (Samos, Greece) LTBJ (Izmir, Turkey) LGMT (Mytilene, Greece) LTFD (Balikesir, Turkey) LTBH (Canakkale, Turkey) LGHI (Chios, Greece) LGIK (Ikaria, Greece) and finish the fligh…

Then we pick up Yellowhead Pass [YHEAD] which is the main northern pass through the Rocky Mountains. If the visibility is right we shall see the magnificent Mount Robson as we turn at waypoint [ROBSN]. Then we fly through the pass along Route 16 toward Jasper [JASPR] and its small grass field northeast of town at [CYJA]. (The field is normally closed to outsiders, but an exception has been made.) This week sees the long-awaited tour through the Alps for more powerful aircraft. We'll start at Salzburg and hit most of the big runways in the Alps, all the way to Geneva, with a detour through northern Italy. Stops are at Innsbruck, Bolzano, Samedan, Bergamo, Milan (Malpensa) and Turin. There are going to be a lot of ups and downs on this one! Flight plans (both PLN and GFP formats) Aircraft Although the plan was designed with large four-engined props in mind, it will work well for a variety of aircraft. Target cruise speed is around 220kts, ideally with decent altitude (up to 15,000ft) and climb performance. I will be flying the Avr…

This week we tour the Orkney Islands off the north coast of Scotland. This plan was originally done in 2015, but I have lengthened it slightly. We start at Inverness, with a quick stop at Dornoch before we join the original plan at Wick. Next we head north across to the islands, where our route will include the shortest scheduled flight in the world between Westray and Papa Westray, done in the RW in an Islander. After stops on just about every runway on the islands, we'll finish at Kirkwall. Flight plans and even a short narrative (from 2015) can be downloaded here. Aircraft The plan is 186nm so there's no hurry. A Britten-Norman Islander wou…

This is another flight in our series of used flight plans: Germany South Part II: Roman heritage, more castles, and towns For this flight, we stay in the westernmost part of Germany until we make a short turn to the east. Departure airport will be Trier-Föhren (EDRT), and we will land at Saarbrücken (EDDR), Lachen-Speyerdorf (EDRL), Baden-Oos (EDTB), Neuhof (LFGC, yes, that's in France!), Freiburg (EDTF), and Schwenningen (EDTS) before we reach our destination for today, Friedrichshafen (EDNY). Flightplan & Pilots Guide: Available here. Aircraft: The route is 325 miles, so we should take a plane that cruises with about 170 KIAS. There is a w…

California' Gold Part 1 The Sierra Nevada's Today’s flight will take us over some of the most breathtaking scenery of California's Sierra Nevada's. There are several high climbs of over 12,000 ft and 2 or 3 small mountain strips to contend with. There are a total of 10 stops and 396 miles to cover in 3 hrs so we will need something that can do 180 or better but maneuverable in mountainous terrain. Will do a few touch and go’s to help with time. Bring your V key and hope for good weather. Flight Plan AIRCRAFT I’m thinking RV7 or a Lance Air for better time. (A few small strips that might be tough with the LA) SCENERY…

The second unashamedly recycled flight plan seeing central Oregon in the summer. We start at Longview Ranch (OG39) and make our way first along the John Day River valley. First stop is at Wiley Creek (0OR1), then an easier one at Grant County Regional (KGCD) airport in John Day before going back to the farm strips and Hi Country No. 2 (97OR). We leave the John Day valley and head southeast to Murphy Ranch (3OR9). We then make our way north heading loosely towards Baker City with stops at Lockhart (2OR6), Unity (11OG) Bald Mountain (OG45) and Muddy Creek (OG27). Final destination for the week is Baker City Municipal (KBKE). Flight plans PLN format GF…
