I've had the idea to fly down through Central America for a little while now, since I gave myself a Round The World Challenge to do over the Christmas/New Year holiday period. When I was crossing Mexico and heading towards the Caribbean, I noticed the rather nice mountains passing below me and thought they'd be worth going for a closer look sometime. There are a good few weeks worth of flying we can do, so I plan to start just over the Mexican border in Monterrey, and work our way south. We'll start at Monterrey's second airport, Del Norte MMAN and head west for a short hop across the mountains to Plan de Guadalupe (MMIO) near Saltillo. This will be followed by a…

PNG Tour R1 – Return to the Highlands In the next few weeks we return to the wonderful bush flying that is so necessary for life in Papua New Guinea … next to "the worst place to be a pilot." The first week takes us through the high mountains of the Central and Eastern Highlands, combining several regional airports that serve domestic passenger flights with a couple of smaller bush strips that might offer a modest airmanship challenge. The second week likewise combines some larger strips with a couple of more interesting hillside landings. These first two legs serve as a warm-up for the second pair of legs which offer the far more testing bush strips of the Tapini an…

San Francisco Bay: Flight Unlimited II Redux For 2019-03-02 MM Today we fly over the San Francisco Bay Area in light general aviation aircraft. This is a tribute to the classic Flight Unlimited II, the 1997 flight simulator developed by Looking Glass Studios. Marked by state-of-the-art fluid flight dynamics and an ATC controlled airspace of 600 AI aircraft in the Bay Area, it seemed to be something special. You might enjoy a look at the cockpit experience of Flight Unlimited II (from about 8:37 in this longer video). We depart from Half Moon Bay (KHAF), the default starting position for FU II. After a late lunch at the 3-Zero Café, we head south into the San…

Alright race fans, time to get serious here. 2020, do you want a race ? I know SOH is struggling with members so we need ideas. With Mike and Rob stepping down, I’m it for an executive committee. I know I run the site and make the Duenna but it’s not my race, it’s your race. Evaluate the current setup, current rule structure and perhaps the race needs a shakeup to continue. We need ideas, if you want to continue let’s hear them. I’d like to see a true RTW next year if possible. So 2020, yay or nay?
